This is so so soon after qualifying, they must be exhausted. I hope to not see semi's next year Frown

On a positive note, we're not seeing them this year either Big Grin

Are you kidding? They're supposed to be professional athletes. Where's the pro peloton at!?
  • 25 0
It also means that a protected rider can save energy through the semis and have more energy to push in the finals.

Not sure what was wrong with the original (pre WB) format?!
  • 13 2
@mluk2004: yeah whose brain child is this. Top 60 ( or was it 80? ) onto finals. Nix the semis, so unnecessary, and likely more injuries.

Its the same for them all poor riders hahahahaaha
  • 2 3
@mluk2004: I'm not sure about that, I don't think being Protected automatically gets to the Finals, only Semi's.

Protected riders to the Final are:
1. riders ranked in the top 3 women elite and top 5 men elite of the final UCI World
Cup standings of the previous season
2. men and women junior riders ranked in the top 3 of the current UCI World Cup
standings. At the first UCI World Cup round of the season there will be no
protected junior riders.

For ME I think it's: Bruni, Jackson, Loris, Finn and Andreas and WE: Vali, Nina and Marine. I might be wrong but that's how I read it.

@donimo: Last year all of us complaint about semis and that Nobody watches 5-6h but instead to cancel the semis they are still doing semis but Not Streaming it. Beter Option would have been if they Showed qualies and get rid of the semis and then Show the final.
  • 6 0
@HundredPerCent: Yeah in all seriousness, I would gladly get rid of the semis, but as long as they play an important part in the results I'd like to be able to watch them. Especially now they switched them to the day before, since that ~six hours was honestly a long watch on one sitting.
  • 12 1
What did Danny Hart say to Wyn in the track walk video when he expressed concern about getting tired after three runs?
“Oh, you’re worried about ten minutes of exercise?”
  • 2 1
I want semi's broadcasted again, I like the idea when it was live.... I got more racing for my money.... havnt botherd to sub this year.... im not paying for less content than the previous year lol
  • 4 1
@HeatedRotor: Semi's was free on Youtube last year so your'e still getting the same amount for your money
  • 3 1
@colinb19: still the same thing though, They are providing less content.
  • 4 6
They are professional athletes. They train to do 2 race runs in a day. It’s what they are paid to do.
  • 4 0
@HeatedRotor: True - I believe we were told that the idea of having a smaller field with semis would be
because it could be broadcast live for more viewers. We got screwed.
  • 2 0
@bikesandbeers: @bikesandbeers: WB wants to get the broadcast down to a couple of hours (and get shot of privateers). When they took over they initially announced only top 30 would qualify and everybody had a fit!!
As a 'compromise' they introduced semi's knowing riders would hate it and push to get rid of it.
After initial resistance riders got used to it pretty quickly and as it was televised it got good coverage.
So they moved it to the day before finals and stopped showing it or promoting it.
Now everybody hates it again and want rid of it.
Next WB will announce 'riders wishes are at the forefront of what we do and after listening to feedback we are taking the decision discontinue semi-finals..........................cough, andcutqualifyingtotop20, cough.
  • 1 2
@watchmen: I would hate to see the final go back to 60 riders. It’s pointless. It just ruins the racing. 60-30 were never broadcast anyway so they never got screen time anyway. At least now semis are broadcast so they will get more coverage than befoe

They were also both on the start list for the 2017 EWS race in Finale Ligure, but it looks like Greg DNF'd? Richie placed 14th.
  • 1 0
@Canadmos: Thanks for the correction. Who would've thought.
  • 25 0
Come on Greg, make the finals!
  • 1 1
FFS - with 2 protected riders out of the top 30, does this mean he drops to 31st ie no final?
  • 3 0
@djyosh: means be 32 running in the final any protected rider outside the cut off will run finals day
  • 6 0
@Philthy1: Nice - thanks! So, theoretically, every protected rider could break the beam in semis, call it a day, and we could have a 40 rider final? That would be a nice FU to the UCI
  • 1 0
@djyosh: but then they would be loosing out on potential points for the the overall.
  • 18 0
Stefano Introzzi in 11th with the #91 plate.....dang son you put down a heater!

 Home turf? :-)
  • 17 0
good to see amaury back on form
  • 11 4
Protection rule is the worst. Norton and Coulanges crash every semi but are able to remain in top 10 as they are able to get points for finals every round. Even if you don't like semis this is still super unfair on all the other riders.
  • 6 1
Agree. And being able to save yourself for final by breaking the beam also sucks. It’s in the rules but not fair on other riders.
  • 2 0
 They're stuffed next year though
  • 4 0
Dak hasn't finished out of the Top 10 in a semi all year and won the Poland semi. Coulanges you may have a point but he's losing out on semi points each round and could be out of the Top 10 soon if he kept it up. At the end of the year semi points matter so I doubt they are tanking on purpose.
  • 4 1
Remove the protection and have that aspect as a level playing field.
  • 5 0
Loic said in Wyns Leogang wrap video that protected rider status is going away for 2025. Let's hope semis are gone too..!
  • 2 0
@bgoldstone: Yep your 100% right Dak has done really well in semis. However, he wouldn't have even been there, has crashed out of 3 of the 4 qualifiers.
  • 11 1

Stefano introzzi..... Go for it my man. Nothing better than a national rider winning on home soil at a WC. One race run, one chance, be number one. Good luck
  • 12 4
They're killing women's DH. 15 or 20 should move on. How does the sport grow if riders are not more consistently in the finals?
  • 5 6
Explain how 15-20 woman can move on to finals when there's only 16?
  • 12 0
@weeksy59: there was 37 in qualifying.
  • 5 8
@bgoldstone: so 50% of the women went to Semis. What percentage of Men went?
I'm not trying to be harsh here, I love seeing the women race, but they just don't have enough numbers to justify it. There has to be enough of a cut off to make it discernable between each step. You can't have 32 (how many finished) start qualifying and 20 of them make it, can you? It's a tiered system.
  • 1 1
@weeksy59: same cut did you see how many mean actually entered
  • 4 1
@Philthy1: 34 women in timed training. 167 men.
  • 6 1
@weeksy59: So then go with 15 and everyone is happy. It's hilarious that so many people want to talk about how fair or unfair it would be to the men if a different/higher percentage of female riders move on. No one is asking for 30 out of 32 to move on. You can't make a reasonable argument with exaggerations. The women are their own category. They do not gain or lose value as athletes based on comparisons to men. That would be sexist.
  • 14 1
@weeksy59: Before 2023 there were more elite women in finals and now more riders are entering than before, so the numbers could easily justify a jump to 15 in finals (as it was in 2022). Looking at Val di Sole in 2022, 21 elite women rode in qualifying with 18 racing in finals. This week 32 set a time in qualifying.

We are regularly seeing more than 10 elite women in finals anyway due to protected rules so there's clearly the depth of talent there to increase the cap and it makes space for more unprotected riders. Currently, if all five finals-protected riders qualify in the top ten then there are just five spots for the rest of the elite women to fight over. The elite men have 10 protected riders for a 30-person final so if we are talking percentages then it makes more sense to have five protected women for a 15-person final.
  • 7 1
@edspratt: the unprotected aspect is big. the women are fighting for only 5 available spots in the semi final since 10 of 15 are spoken for. The men have 40 out of 60 spots open. Junior men have 22 of 25 available
  • 4 1
@weeksy59: then go 32 start - 20 in the semi -15 in the final. the field is only going to get bigger and more competitive next year when the jr kiwi women move up.
  • 1 0
@bgoldstone: I've got no issues at all with more women racing, especially if there's more in the field. My comments seem to have been taken as though I'm against having more, but that's really not the case, I just think for them to have greater numbers in Semis and Finals, they need more riders overall.
  • 1 0
@weeksy59: yes you can. It doesn't take long to get through 30 riders
  • 9 0
 Yes Richie and Greg in!

Loic crash?
  • 1 0
I'd wager small crash or big mistake for Loic. His pace from split 2 to the finish was 2min 2 seconds, which would put him about top 5-10 pace or so. He might be on the hotseat a while for finals...
  • 12 1
Feel sorry for the broadcasters having to make it sounds exciting when the 15-20 riders after Loic are 5+ seconds behind at the third split
  • 1 0
In Troy's vlog he said that the WB crew are supposed to pack the dirt for finals because some ruts were just getting too dangerous so... Maybe he is trying to get the smoothest run early on?

Maybe not, what do I know anyways

He was sick at end of the season last year. Whole team was sick. Food poisoning I think, details are foggy. Saw interview where illness dragged all through the off season.
  • 6 0
He has had issues with health for a while I believe. Not just the food poisoning incident. I read something about battling glandular fever or something. Poor guy, he was always in my fantasy league as he is so fast and was always a potential winner at any venue. Hope he bounces back soon!

  • 6 0
 @jaytdubs:

No. It's top 30 and if a protected rider happens to fall outside, then they get added as 31, 32, etc.

And unprotected #35 would not make the cut

It would be nice for WB to address why we are not having a live tv feed for semis. Radio silence isn’t a good look.

 Where is Jordan Williams?
  • 5 2
@dtsabas I've been wondering about that for over a year. Jordan Williams was right there with Jackson in '22 and went on to win his very first elite race last year. Then he fell off the pace. Something is way off either with him, the bike, or the teams ability to adequately support 3 very fast riders.
  • 4 0
he didn't start qualifying so assuming an injury of some sort
  • 8 0
@fentoncrackshell: “sorry Jordan we gave Loic and Finn the last sets of brake pads, you can just drag your feet to stop, ok?”
