Amir Kabbani needs your positive vibes. The slopestyle rider from Germany broke his 12th vertebra during a training session near his home. He's spent the last month digging and practicing for his up-coming movie "In The Woods 3." He's been in great shape and was learning new tricks but sometimes things turn out differently than planned. Amir has a positive attitude but he needs your support during this hard time. Send him your positive vibes via Facebook

Ok, so I just left the article before this one saying that "body armor" is a good trend to forget! f*ck, how much money do you want to bet that Amir wishes he had a Dainese body armor suit on. Now he's F'd. I really hope he gets well soon, but you (Mike Kazimer of Pink Bike) or anyone else can't look at me straight in the eye and say that body armor would have made no difference to the severity of his injuries!! Like I said before, all the Moto GP racers riding at 200 miles per hour must be wasting their time with body armor right?! I think not. You hear of more broken backs and serious injuries at these MTB races than at Moto GP races. Get well soon Amir, and please wear some armor.
  • 6 1
Armor is not always the answer. If for example he fell a considerable distance/height onto his neck/shoulders, or his butt, armor would do nothing to prevent the compression on the spine (just ask Bender...). I agree that certain types of armor, i.e. knee pads, elbow pads have their place, but those full suits can be more dangerous for some of the new school riders who NEED to be able to move around with little resistance in the air. Consider that many of the injuries we see in mountain biking, specifically in the gravity scene, are fall induced (often from considerable heights), whereas Moto GP injuries occur mostly on the lateral plane, and as such, much of the visible armor Moto riders have is to keep them sliding or protect them from impacts occurring at lower impact angles, not the immense force of compression associated with falling from heights higher than a bike.

You aren't making an argument. I didn't say it was always the answer. What I am saying is that out the majority of times you crash hard, body armor will save you. And you walk away. Flying off a forty foot cliff like stupid Bender, well that's a different story. He would just huck shit and hope he landed it. Not try smaller versions first. Armor won't save him. I know what you say about lesser impact angle for GP riders but I bet if measure the G forces of impact when they get high sided 10 feet into the air 180 miles per hour, that's not some little impact.

Have you worn Dainese body armor? Not really restrictive. Cumbersome but you have full range. I remember crashing in them and thinking, man I should ry be hurt right now. Just dusted my self off.

Read the article from last year. I copied and pasted so you can learn something about impacts in general and specifically what you call lesser impacts on GP bikes. 25 G Forces were recorded. Not that hard huh?!?! I was wrong about the air bag suit. Alpinestar, not Dainese.

Marc Marquez crashed at 209.9 mph during practice for last weekend’s Italian GP at Mugello, but the Repsol Honda rider was medically cleared to ride the event, which he did. The system includes a data logger, which reported eight separate g spikes—the highest of which was 25 gs—during Marquez’s 4.25-second crash.

I'm by no means trying to downplay the severity seen in many Moto GP crashes, nor am I suggesting that because body armor didn't always work for Bender, it won't work for anyone else. What I do know is this, body armor will not save you from crushing vertebrae if you take a large fall with your spine perpendicular to the ground. Is this the way Kabbani fell, I don't know; however, if it is, I was suggesting body armor, especially your beloved Dainese pressure suits, will not have done much for him. I know from personal experience that they are great for taking spills into toothy terrain, or for large impacts perpendicular to the face of the plates/pads, but they offer about as much protection to your spine as your pants do when you fall hard onto your ass (if you can imagine jumping off a roof in a sitting position, this is the type of impact I'm referring to).

For the record, I have used (Sixsixone) body armor, especially when I first was getting into the gravity game, you can check my BuySell if you'd like to pick up a suit that's in good shape. I quit using it because I found it cumbersome. Sure I can still move my arms, but for spin tricks, like for example 360's, they aren't especially welcome. As an aspiring big mountain rider, I certainly see the benefit in protective gear, but pressure suits are a bit dated.

Armor can help with jagged boulders and stumps. Throwing your spine into a pointed rock at high speed turns out a lot better with armor. Going over the bars onto a dirt trail, not so much. But really I would like to wish Amir a speedy recovery! Awesome riding and I hope you're back at it soon.
