Sheffield’s Howard Street Dual - Photo Report

Mar 11, 2018
by Tristan Tinn

It’s a drizzly Saturday afternoon on the 10th March 2018; we find ourselves in Sheffield town centre, UK. Amongst the hustle and bustle of the high-street shoppers, the scene is set for some elbow-to-elbow dual slalom action, with an eclectic mix of some of the biggest names in World Cup mountain biking, thrown in with some local heroes and a dusting of 50:01 hooligans.

The event is part of Sheffield's Outdoor City Weekender, another reason why the city is leading the way in promoting city-based outdoor lifestyles. In previous years the racing has taken place during daylight hours; this year’s schedule has been pushed back into dusk to add another dimension. Hope Technology are stepping in, providing the lumens to turn night into day.

The course is moderately moist and runs from the top of Hallam square, across the front of the main Hallam university building and down to the bottom of Howard Street. The event has been made possible by Sheffield City Council and organised by ThisIsSheffield.

The men’s line-up includes Sheffield’s own Steve Peat, his fellow 50:01 crew including Josh ‘Ratboy’ Bryceland and Josh ‘Loose Dog’ Lewis, along with 2017 Redbull Hardline winner Craig ‘Seven’ Evans and ‘right hand’ Sam Dale. Matt and Dave Hockenhull will also be taking part along with last year’s reigning champion Brett Penfold and second place Ben Moore. Elite downhill pinner Jono Jones is making his way up from Woburn, too. Team Cotic will be represented by the Rocket Man himself, James Swinden, who will doubtlessly be chased down Straightline Chay Granby.

The women’s line-up is headed up by last year’s winner Carrie Poole who held her 4-month-old son aloft on the podium. She’ll be chased down by last year’s runners-up Anya Tolwinska, Ellie Dewdeny and Katy Thorpe. BMX superstar Chloe Taylor will be challenging for the top step alongside downhiller Becci Skelton.

Steve, how does it feel to win on home turf?
bigquotesIt feels really good. Brett was on it all night, riding awesome. Until I got to the final, I'd not rode as well as I did. I absolutely hammered it because I knew that Brett was really quick. I over pushed it on the first run and ended up with a 1.5 disadvantage. Luckily, for me, I hammered the second run, and Brett made few mistakes but I beat him by 2.1, so strong yeah.

It’s awesome, dual racing is mint and to have one in Sheffield city Centre, my own town, is absolutely awesome. For me to be able to win it – cool.
Steve Peat, Mens Winner

I love that picture of the 50:1 clan. They look like street hooligans getting ready to go out and cause trouble. Which they kinda are.

First thing that came to my mind was Kubricks "Clockwork Orange"... oh no - here comes The Rat and his droogs, ready to get wasted in The Korova Milk Bar, stoned on milk laced with narcotics...

Anyone able to explain the BC 1.5 rule to me and why it applied to Peaty but not Becci Skelton in her semi final?
  • 2 0
I would like to know too. I was there, and as a fan would always be pleased to see the big guy win. It was great to see him fight back from a loss in heat one by about ten seconds, to win the second by what seemed about 1 second. Penfold was declared what looked to be a very deserved winner by the commentator, only for the decision to be reversed for the podium. It was very frustrating as a spectator.

As far as I am aware, the 1.5 rule only applies to a crash in the first run of the 2, so any crash in the second run just gets timed as usual. The only reason it exists is to make it more exciting for spectators and put a bit of pressure on the crashed rider to try pull it out of the bag in second run, thus more exciting than rolling down because you know you can't make back the time. It was the same rule last year too and everyone was made aware of it at the rider briefing. Hope that helps clear things up Smile

Thanks Brett, I just upgraded to a 2.8 70-200, and bloody glad I did too. Very tricky conditions for sure - and too many people about to be setting up remote flashes etc!

I've never understood riding while carrying your helmet. It never gets in the way when it's on my head, it's like it was meant to be there or something...

@tris400d awesome work on the low light photos, plus a lil bitta grain looks a bit old skool in urban shots! nice job
  • 2 0
Cheers, I'd like to say it was a creative decision - although no grain wasn't an option unless you were after an article full of pan shots (which in retrospect I might have done more of)!

The night time shots remind me of the old floodlit 4 cross racing from back in the day at the WC. All we needed was some CG!
