Sheffield s Howard Street Dual

We know you love mountain bike racing and this Saturday Dual Slalom racing will take over the streets of Sheffield. The most exciting form of mountain bike racing is going to be the centerpiece of the Outdoor City Weekender. This spectacular event will showcase the excitement of head to head knockout mountain bike racing to the assembled masses

One of those heads will belong to non-other than Steve Peat. A late entry into the race Peaty, the legend, has now confirmed he will be bringing his well-honed dual skills to Howard St. Will his years of experience outweigh the vigour of the youth he’s up against?

The invited racers, selected for their race performance, represent a wide range of Sheffield talent as well as riders from further afield. The talented lads and lasses will put on an amazing show which will be as much fun to watch as it will to take part. There are still a handful of lasses places up for grabs and entry is now open, if you are or know any lasses who are keen, send them to the BC website.

Commentary will be provided by the master, Tobi Parodi, backed up with beats from Red Bull's sound system. With cow bells and noise makers lining the track, the racers will be cheered from top to bottom making it great fun for the whole family and the best hecklers in town. The riders will be racing a unique city centre course down Howard street across the front of Sheffield Hallam's main building and finishing behind the Howard pub. Made possible by Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Hallam University the depth of riding talent will bring gasps from onlookers with nail-biting finishes and elbow to elbow racing.

Racing will begin at 2:30pm with practice and seeding runs from midday. Finals will be from 5pm with the prize giving immediately after. In true 'This is Sheffield' style every racer must put a random prize into the pot as part of their entry. At the end of the race, the winners get to pick from the pile first and everyone gets a prize plus a round of applause. This prize pile has been significantly swelled by our amazingly generous race sponsors, a huge thank you to them.

Like slalom ski racing, riders negotiate a series of gates pitting themselves against each other and the clock in a head to head knockout format. The course has a stack of great features sendable by the best and rollable by all. It starts down a long set of stairs before kicking left into a set of four custom built rollers across Hallam square. The best will double these up or manual through the whole set. This sets up the riders for a big wooden kicker up on to a unique set of downhill grass rollers with two tight flagged corners. The riders are then spat out on a set of stairs or a custom ramp straight into Chaos corner, a flat 180-degree corner manoeuvring through street furniture. The riders then face a series of flat grass corners which will test their cornering skills and speed. They are split by a wooden booter where the fast ones will be trying to keep it low and fast. After an awkward right-hander, the racers drop into the FML fade, the final feature, a steep grassy bank which will accelerate them across the finishing line. For the best, this will be about 30 seconds.

It will be a great time to be in Sheffield with so much going on for the Outdoor City weekender; from the Sheffield adventure film festival, to the Magnificent 7 road anti-enduro and the Climbing works international festival. At 9pm, straight after the race, SHAFF have a mountain bike film selection showing and best of all you can take beers into the cinema. If you love mountain biking come out and show the rest of Sheffield what it’s all about. This unique city centre race gives us the chance to educate and inspire the rest of the city outside of the woods and trails. Bring yourself, bring your mates and bring your families. This is going to be an event to witness.
