North America’s longest gondola ride brings more than just enjoyable alpine views, it also grants access to a 3,300 vertical foot descent of prime mountain biking in Kellogg, Idaho. Silver Mountain has been hard at work expanding their mountain biking operations this year, with trail crews working around the clock to bring new trails to life. The latest addition is Frankenbeans, a steep and off camber track that leads through a labyrinth of trees with a massive bermed finish. Having only officially been open a few weeks, Frankenbeans lacks the polite polish of a more established trail. Instead it delivers dirt-surfing fun in loads as you hang on as best you can.

Silver Race Series # 4 provided the perfect opportunity to put Frankenbeans through its paces. Allowing riders from Cat 2 through Pro to test their braking and drifting prowess through the loose dust while Cat 3 riders road the more conventional Jackass trail. The course favored local Pro rider (and trail builder) Kent Billingsley. While Eben Kiehl (Cat 1 Men 19-29) put in a surprisingly quick run, trailing Billingsley’s time by just more than a second. Despite the abundance of moon dust, falls and spills kept to a surprising minimum. Results for SRS # 4 can be found here.

To see what the riding is all about at Silver Mountain, you can enter Silver Race Series # 5 on September 7th.
