Slack Randoms: Adidas' New Gravel Shoe, The UCI's MTB Goof, Road Rage, & More

Sep 19, 2021
by James Smurthwaite
We use Slack as our workplace communication tool at Pinkbike and we have a #randoms channel which we use to share an assortment of videos and stories from all corners of the cycling world and beyond... We thought a couple of the moments from the past week were too good not to share with a wider audience, so here are some of the highlights.

Adidas' Off-Road Shoe

photo

Hot on the heels of its soccer/commuter Velosamba shoe released in March this year, Adidas has now revealed an off-road cycling shoe for the first time. As it's name suggests, The Gravel Cycling Shoe is more aimed at fireroad mile munchers than out-and-out mountain bikers but this does show Adidas is willing to offer footwear for a wide variety of riders. Who knows, maybe an iconic, sticky flat pedal shoe is on the way next? /s

photo

Cycling Tips reports that like pretty much every other shoe of the category, Adidas’s offering features a two-bolt SPD pattern on the sole. The upper is made of Primegreen recycled materials, and Adidas promises “no virgin polyester” has been used in the construction of them. The sole is synthetic with TPU ‘walking pods’ and there's also a cuff to keep out trail debris.

The shoes are available in a number of markets and priced at $170 / €180 but given they were released a short while back, there's probably not much chance of you hunting down a pair now.

Road Rage in Australia

Here's one of the more shocking road rage videos we've seen in a while. We don't know what lead up to the incident but there's no justification for this driver driving into a cyclist and crushing his bike in the process. At the risk of our bias showing, this seems closer to assault or attempted murder than the "moment of madness" described by the local news reporter.

BMW's Overpowered Concept eBike

photo

BMW has released a concept ebike that makes most of its competitors look anemic by comparison. The i Vision AMBY features a number of top-level mountain bike components (including Intend suspension) and a whopping 2,000Wh battery that give a range of 300km. Of course, it's not exactly legal in its current form.

Using an accompanying smartphone app, riders can choose between the European legal 25 km/h (15.5 mph) speed, a second speed-pedelec mode that reaches 45 km/h (28 mph), and a new high-speed-pedelec mode that ups the ante to 60 km/h (37 mph).

So why have BMW made an ebike that needs to be licensed and insured to be legal anywhere in the world? Well, this is more about legislation than a viable product. The German car manufacturer said, “In the absence of any existing legal framework for a vehicle of this kind with a modular speed concept, the “AMBY” Vision Vehicles set out to prompt the introduction of such legislation and, by consequence, developments of this nature.”

Basically, the car industry has seen the success of ebikes and wants a slice of that pie too but it knows that the bike industry already has a decent head start under the current rules, so instead it’s jockeying to change them. For a deeper dive into this legislation battle, there's an in-dept piece on cyclingindustry.news, here.

The UCI's Funny Looking Mountain Bikes

photo

The UCI revealed a swanky-looking new website recently and it has made life much easier for us covering the events at Snowshoe but they didn't quite get everything right. The 'Mountain Bike' section link definitely features bikes being ridden in the mountains but looks a bit closer and...

Messing About on Boards in the Woods

Bikes aren't the only tool to get rad on in the woods as these two videos show. Firstly 50to01's Max Nerukar got on the homepage of Thrasher with this ATV skateboard part, then there's Benny Milam's Summer Dream snowboard part in the thawed woods of Wisconsin.

Travis Pastrana's Terrifying POV

From World Cup Downhill winning runs to huge Rampage drops, we watch a lot of POV videos here at Pinkbike but not many are as terrifying as Travis Pastrana's record time up Mount Washington.

Ecuadorian Soapbox Racing

Speaking of scary POVs, this one is from a soapbox race on the streets of Ecuador and sees the rider launching off speed bumps and hitting 50mph. THere's a great deep dive into the racing culture on The Drive, here.

@TH3MACK: There's very few race runs I wouldn't be perfectly happy to sit shotgun for but that's one of them. The steering input corrections he's making at those speeds on the edge of a precipice is insane.

@mikelevy Get iRacing yet? He trained for this on iRacing with the new Mt Washington track www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCkC4tk5IiE

@heatproofgenie: No, not yet. I'm going to end up spending $8k+ on a SIM setup at some point, but haven't convinced myself yet haha
  • 2 0
@mikelevy: Ha! Yes it's a slippery slope but pretty amazing for any gearhead. I've just upgraded to a direct drive base and must say that some of the races I've done on iRacing are among the most intense things I've done. Also just being able to blast around on the Nordschleife with your car of choice at a time of your choosing is pretty satisfying. Not cheap though for sure, I've got probably $3k US in my setup.
  • 4 0
@heatproofgenie: I'm also nervous about never leaving my sim room and gaining 300lb. Worth it tho
  • 3 0
@mikelevy: Legit worry but unfounded, this isn't World of Warcraft. Look up Dan Suzuki on Youtube, he runs my setup basically at full force feedback which is 20nm. You'll be sweating after any stint.

Acted like he was driving a shuttle. He gave a thumbs up to someone he knows during the run.

@mikelevy: Like others have said, you won't gain any weight. You'll actually burn some calories between using the steering wheel with force feedback and perhaps some elevated heart rate during an iRacing official race.

I dunno. Kinda looks like the roadies had the car trapped in that parking spot both with themselves and placing the bike in front. The driver then panicked and fled, with one roadie intentionally jumping on the hood. No way to really know, but as a life long cyclist myself I can say they don’t look good here.

It looks like the kind of situation that arises from everyone involved making multiple poor decisions

I agree, not a good look from the road toads here. As a Melburnian/Australian its these sorts of news stories that unfortunately do the rounds on social media and only serve to fuel the flames of the cyclist vs motorist culture wars down under.

@hasteTHEday: Exactly. Sun Tzu said "Give your enemy a golden bridge to retreat across." If cyclists surround a car and are threatening the occupants, then the driver will get to the point where the accelerator is their only option, regardless of who or what is in front. Stupid on the cyclists part. Obviously the altercation was going on long and loud enough for all the neighbours to come out to watch. And they seem to agree with you.

Any person that seeks to run over anyone with a car, is a complete f*ckwit...end of story.
  • 12 6
Yes the rider was an a*hole but he only attacked verbally. This doesn't justify the drivers beaviour at all.
Stepping on the gas if a person is in front of your 3000 lbs death machine is attempted manslaughter.
I really hope the driver got charged.
  • 12 11
@delicious46: I try. I will keep a special eye out for you when I'm driving. And I'm not sure he tried to run him over. Looks like the guy pretty much threw himself on the bonnet to me. And if so many road riders were not such dicks, there might be less aggro toward them on the roads.
  • 5 0
@heinous: it is who you think it is. Never short of a word regardless of the situation.
  • 8 6
@Chuckolicious Someone yelling "you've got no money" doesn't sound like someone in panic. Also, at the moment that the car drove over the bike, no one was near the driver or directly threatening him. The road biker in white/red was in front of the car. If he didn't jump in the hood he could've probably broken his legs or get dragged by the car.

@mrsquiggle: How could you possibly know who I am, or what I look like, to be able to keep an eye out for me?
You're just a coward. It's such a cowardly act to run someone over with a car, and you've premeditated it, publicly.
Arseholes like you only threaten such things because you know that your victim will end up crippled or dead, and unable to fight back.
If you weren't such a coward, you'd run a person over with your bicycle.
At least they might survive.

@Startgas: I noticed the newer models have adidas on the tongue rather Five Ten.
  • 12 0
I used to buy 5.10 rock climbing shoes before the company was sold to adidas. Since then quality has dropped significantly. The last one I tried started to fall apart after a single day of climbing. Really disappointing. Now I use scarpa again - a company that basically makes shoes and only shoes.

@kingtut87: yep Adidas on the tongue. And the least grippy tread under the Five Ten name...

Yep. Had to replace my older Wildcats this year. The updated Adidas/5.10 Wildcats are totally different. The sizing is different, the sole is a totally different (less sticky) rubber, but they are waaay lighter.

Pastrana is insanely talented. How the hell do you learn a road like that and be able to drive it inch perfect at speeds where the outcome of a crash is likely very, very bad?

Check out the Schumacher doc, some people have a need to be perfect when it comes to the things they love doing, Travis no doubt has that same 100% drive. @bigdood AI was a freak and put in the practice while growing up, I doubt he would have competed in the current nba.

This video explains how he used the iRacing game to help. They just released a laser scanned version of the track. iRacing isn't going to make him faster, but it does help to learn the track when limited track time is available.

I dont think you can. He has full Loic Bruni focus, which doesnt mean no mistakes, it just means he corrects and adapts better than everyone else.

Also modern safety equipment in these cars is the real deal. Even back in 2012, Jeremy Foley almost had a worst case scenario crash. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwdC1Yi3OG8. Probably lucky he had slowed slightly for a corner before going off. That is as oppose to...

Ott Tanak's crash inn Monte Carlo, that was a big oopsie at almost 90mph. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFEjdvUdWyM

Pastrana's run is nuts, there's no doubt. My favourite (and every bit as crazy) is Ari Vatanen in the Peugeot at Pike Peak back when it was still a dirt track. Travis gets close to the edge, Ari hangs the wheel clean off it

This is not the first time Adidas has had offroad cycling shoes as the article states. I have a pair from about 13 years ago, clipless shoes. Search for Adidas Voltage 2008. Adidas had a cycling line in the early 2000s.

We need a new race series, road bike downhill on pavement. Courses where riders can exceed 120 km/hr. Maybe gravel bikes on wide slicks, better brakes. Maybe longer wheelbases, suspension too.

Hill climb like excitement but downhill.
  • 1 0
I don't get what BMW hope to achieve with that waste of a beautiful fork. Trying to blur the lines between MX and MTB might open up markets for them, but only if it's recognisable as a product in the eyes of their established customer base; no one here would look at a BMW mtb and think it'll be any good. Have you seen the badged-up open-mould crap they have in the car showrooms?
And BMW bike owners are pissing themselves laughing at this from astride their GSs
  • 3 0
As the article they link to, and the spin here points out, it seems that BMW et al are trying to get ebikes part of a regulated market with type approval etc. This is an approach that could put boutique or niche bike builders out of business, due to costs needed to be compliant, and allow car manufacturers to takeover.

Why try and produce a cargo bike free from insurance or a driving license, and limit yourself to 25kmph with a range of maybe 80-100 miles on a charge as a result, when BMW will do one that goes up to 60-70kmph with a 300+ mile range that is available for lease?
