by Ed Spratt
We use Slack as our workplace communication tool at Pinkbike and we have a #randoms channel which we use to share an assortment of videos and stories from all corners of the cycling world and beyond... We thought a couple of the moments from the past week were too good not to share with a wider audience, so here are some of the highlights.

Fixed Gear Bike Made from Skateboards

We have seen high pivot bamboo bikes and wooden hardtails but now there is a fixed gear bike made from old skateboards. Not only is it a great use of old boards but it does suprisingly look quite good.

Dua Lipa's Custom Cycling Shoes

To mark the performance of British pop star Dua Lipa in Houston the management at the venue wanted to get her a keepsake. After being tipped off that Dua Lipa was a cyclist, they wanted to surprise her with some cycling shoes during her global stadium tour.

This began a continent-hopping, time-crunched story to create a custom pair of cycling shoes for a pop megastar.

You can read the full story on CyclingTips here.

The Science of Braking

bigquotesThe Science of Stopping is here to demystify the often misunderstood yet radically important world of mountain bike disc brakes and braking. We all have brakes, but do we know how to get the most out of them? By taking on topics such as the how and why of hydraulic disc brakes, while giving riders context to ride style, rotor size, fluid choice and much more. SRAM

The Climate Spiral

bigquotesThis visualization shows monthly global temperature anomalies (changes from an average) between the years 1880 and 2021. Whites and blues indicate cooler temperatures, while oranges and reds show warmer temperatures. As you can see, global temperatures have warmed from mainly human activities as time has progressed.

These temperatures are based on data from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS). Anomalies are defined relative to a base period of 1951 to 1980. The data file used to create this visualization can be accessed here: data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/tabledata_v4/GLB.Ts+dSST.csv.

The "climate spiral" is a visualization designed by climate scientist Ed Hawkins from the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, University of Reading: https://www.climate-lab-book.ac.uk/sp.... Climate spiral visualizations have been widely distributed; a version was even part of the opening ceremony of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

How presumptuous to think Dua Lipa was a roadie, when everyone knows she’s got a BMX background.

 Dual Leapa
  • 3 1
Last I checked, most pro BMX'ers are wearing high end road shoes
  • 35 0
Its not a rotor shim, its sort of a "washer" that prevents rotor bolts from loosening. Three of them accompany many Shimano rotors.
  • 34 11
And nobody used them. Big Grin
  • 31 0
@bman33: I actually keep and use them for my workshop so as to make hose guides: I bend them around a screw-driver, put a bolt through, and screw them on my clients frames to hold the rear derailleur hose for example. It is very handy and aesthetically clean; very satistying. Thank you Shimano Smile

@danstonQ: That sounds like a great work around.
  • 3 5
@bman33: obviously you don't have a BMX background or you WOULD be using them...
  • 2 0
 @bman33: Exactly!!!!!

@danstonQ: ahhhhh thanks for that.. I have tons of them.. that is a fantastic idea....

I refuse to listed to anyone from SRAM talk about the science of braking. I'll open my ears when they make a sub-RSC level brake that functions.
  • 22 0
You can hear about SRAM brake’s every time some hits them.
  • 3 0
yeah, also what's the science of freezing levers?
  • 2 0
Level TLM seems to be the only sub RSC/ULT brake that I've used that seems to work ok
  • 5 0
It is interesting to compare the difference between SRAM and Shimano when it comes to the drop in performance from their top level to their mid/entry level brakes. Braking power from XTR to SLX is very close, but Code to Guide R is dangerously off.
  • 1 0
@rrolly: The list of brakes I would take over a pair of Code R's or Guide R's is very very long
  • 2 0
@edthesled: I can't speak for the Code R's, but I liked the Code RSC's. The Guide R's were so bad that it almost ruined a test ride I was on. Literally had me close to crashing multiple times.
  • 1 0
@rrolly: Was it an apples to apples comparison? Same rotor size, brakes bedded in, same bike, etc.? I’d wager not. There ought to be a bike product review website like rtings.com that runs objective tests and rules out variables none of us possibly could on our own.
  • 1 0
@gnarlysipes: Yes, it was. 3 different models of the 2018 Norco Sight. Same rotor size on all three (brakes were bedded since there were staff that rode the bike previously for demos) . On the Guide R's I had to brake so much ahead of corners that it made the ride frustrating. It was so bad that if I hadn't ridden the Sight with other brakes, I would have gone with a different model/brand altogether.

Clearly the climate spiral vid is analagous to the sizing of mtb rotors from the late 1800's through today - todays rotors are much, much, much larger diameter than your great, great-great (maybe great X3) grandparent's wooden spools. They also had to shred mtb trails in black & white since color film wasn't invented yet, but they did hydrate with moldy beer & rum from leather pouches on the trails.

I hate fixies but that skateboard-deck bike is gorgeous
  • 10 0
The frame is beautiful, and I’m just as impressed by the staircase in his shop. Never seen that before!
  • 8 1
What's next- they make gravel bikes out of early 29er mountain bikes?
  • 1 0
Love the colours, and the effort that went into it, but I'd be terrified of the head tube pulling out.
  • 2 0
Imagine a Santa Cruz bike made from Santa Cruz skateboards!
  • 2 0
I'm most impressed that the drivetrain is always on the far side. Incredible engineering that.
  • 4 0
@mikeyrides: Also the fold out spray booth thing. I gotta say I was as impressed with his shop as I was with the bike.
  • 1 0
@chrsei: isnt that what they essentially are.. with drop bars?
  • 17 6
I must be getting old because I have never heard of Dua Lipa.
Thankfully Spotify means I can spend all day listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Greenday and cheesy 80’s music that takes me back to school discos .
Ill get my youngster ears on and play a bit of Radio 1 rather than 4!
  • 3 0
Listen to "Physical" kinda 80'sish dance music I suppose.

Climate Spiral - Oh hey we should do something, Earth is pretty neat. Right above- Crazy propane diesel jet Kart. We're fucked.
  • 12 0
This dude looks like he can offset the emissions by eating only locally sourced roadkill though.
  • 1 0
YEP! You pretty much nailed it, we're too smart/foolish for our own good.
  • 10 2
I hope SRAM are paying you a lot of money to support their DOT propaganda video.
  • 2 1
DOT is great, SRAM is not

"I have metal, propane and diesel. Let's see. Ok. I have a wicked beard, great smile, dulcet-toned vocal cords. I don't have goggles or fire-retardant suit. But I do have a wicked beard that could catch fire if I wanted it too. I also enjoy the smell of molten metal 2 feet behind me at only half-throttle."

I wanna have a beer with Mr. Maddox and just listen to and watch this thing over and over. Looks like something built out of a Mechano set but makes real fire and melts steel and goes really fast. Only thing better than this is if Morgan Freeman did the voiceover...but only because Bob is driving.

The SRAM video claiming that the difference between mineral oil and Dot is in the rubber is very vague. Which materials do they compare? EPDM vs NBR? There are multiple options for mineral oil, I guess something like Viton has a better temperature window but I didn't bother to look it up... I liked the reference to 'The big short' with Barelli in the bath though.

Here's a simplified version of "the science of braking". The right brake for a given rider's style, weight, terrain etc. is the most powerful brake they can afford. The right rotor size for them is 200mm or 220mm. The right pad type is sintered metallic. Boom, sorted.

That cart is kinda cool though
  • 4 0
 Hot actually, super hot!
  • 3 0
If we carry on with the spiral for a few more years we’ll run out of string
  • 4 1
Yeah, but can you kick flip it?
  • 1 0
28,925 points... after I got about 2000 points one round, it kept playing the same question... until I won. Weird bug but I still won Big Grin
  • 2 0
Can we get Bob to triple jet power the climate spiral? I don’t have time to watch it at that speed.
  • 2 0
Damn Bob! That's one red hot Kart. Love that smile!
  • 2 0
It's a tiny spanner that's what it is!

Pretty sure I saw Pipeline Skatepark being destroyed in the trailer. That was a dark day.
  • 2 0
Had my dad drive me six hours so I could ride it right before they destroyed it. The beginning of the “skateboarding is not a crime” era. Now there is a skate park in every town!

That Part thats asked for is called Screw Retainer Clip...no idea why this should be hard to know
  • 1 0
I clicked on this because of the title-Dua Lipa's Shoes
  • 1 0
Bet I could climb that hill on a pogo stick
  • 1 0
Sure looked like he was on a MTpogo.
Even though he technically stayed upright on the bike I don't know if I'd call that "riding", more like froggystyle.
  • 2 0
 Hosoi!!!!!
  • 1 0
 The rocket
  • 1 0
They are rotor lock washers. probably Shimano.
  • 1 0
That game is eval but fun

7 years ago I watched Dua Lipa play to about 15 people.
  • 5 0
Pffft… I was at her birth.
