Slack Randoms: MTBer vs Moose, Red Bull's Forrest Gump & A Bike Powered Car

Jun 25, 2021
by James Smurthwaite
We use Slack as our workplace communication tool at Pinkbike and we have a #randoms channel which we use to share an assortment of videos and stories from all corners of the cycling world and beyond... We thought a couple of the moments from the past week were too good not to share with a wider audience, so here are some of the highlights.

MTBer vs Moose

What do you do when you meet a moose on the trail? Tell it to "f*ck off" apparently! This video was posted by the rider on Reddit and they later clarified, "This was a young cow. I could tell she was a little small to go bouncing through the alders, so I figured those two small side cuts were my best option unless I wanted to get pushed halfway down the mountain."

A Bicycle Powered Car

The Life OD YouTube channel specializes in repairing second-hand cars but they did something different with this one. Instead of fitting a new engine, they instead decided to make it bike-powered. Skip to around 3:30 to see them take it to the streets for a trip to the McDonald's drivethrough. It's not long before they attract the attention of large crowds and the law...

An ebike inspired by skeletons

We love weird concept bikes here at Slack Randoms and this week we've found another one. The world of ebikes seems to be a never-ending fountain of these leftfield designs and here's yet another. This one was designed by industrial designer Gary Liao from Taipei, Taiwan who wanted to create not just a commuter bike but also a work of art.

The design was inspired by the human skeleton. Liao says on his Behance page, "There are different hardness and shape to human bone. The structure was built according to its function and shaped organically. A hollow bone pillar has te equal strength to the solid pillar and weighs less. I came up with the idea of a bone shaped bike after learning about the fascinating human bone."

Other features of the bike include 20" carbon wheels for maneuverability in traffic and storage options for a laptop and coffee cup.

Citi Bike Sends

The CitiBikeBoyz are a New York based group of riders who collect some wild clips using the city's bike scheme and are well worth a follow. Here are some of our favorite posts from the past few weeks.

Rugby 7s cycling celebration

Here's how the Russian Women's Rugby 7s team celebrated securing their place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. No, we don't know why they went for a bike celebration either!

@Super7: Citi should use them in advertising.

guys are clowns wrecking bikes that are to help people get around and reduce traffic. Selfish jerks.

@Cyberhatter: Citi f*cked over hundreds of thousands in the '08 financial crash. They can pay to repair a few bikes.

@HB208: Citibikes did? Not aware. I'll google it.

@Cyberhatter: Bro, who do you think sponsors Citibikes...

@HB208:Citi Bike is a privately owned public bicycle sharing system serving the New York City boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens, as well as Jersey City, New Jersey. Named after lead sponsor Citigroup, it is operated by Motivate (formerly Alta Bicycle Share), with former Metropolitan Transportation Authority CEO Jay Walder as chief executive until September 30, 2018[1] when the company was acquired by Lyft. The system's bikes and stations use technology from Lyft.

First proposed in 2008 by the New York City Department of Transportation, Citi Bike's scheduled 2011 opening was delayed by Hurricane Sandy and technological problems. It officially opened in May 2013 with 332 stations and 6,000 bikes. Annual expansions have brought the totals to 706 stations and 12,000 bikes as of October 2017, making the service the largest bike sharing program in the United States. Further expansions for Citi Bike are planned to extend its service area across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens, and increase the number of bikes to 40,000.

As of July 2019, there are 169,000 annual subscribers. Citi Bike riders took an average of 56,497 rides per day in 2019,[2] and the system reached a total of 50 million rides in October 2017.

I stand by my comment.

@HB208: Those guys aren't f*cking over Citi bank, they're f*cking over their fellow New Yorkers who are right minded enough to risk their lives riding in NYC. Vandalism pretty much isn't cool no matter how badly you want to rationalize it. Still just some f-head destroying other people's stuff.

 Wear a helmet you idiots

And before someone says „reeee iTs mY hEaLtH nOt YoUrS“, kids see this shit on insta and think it’s cool to ride without a helmet. Be a f*cking role model.

Chill buddy how about you be a role model for other role models and no f words
  • 11 1
BMX as a whole seems less likely to wear helmets.
  • 4 3
A f*cking role model? I do that twice a year.
  • 13 6
It's not every person's responsibility on the internet to be a role model for your kids nor should they be expected to. It is the parents responsibility to teach their own kids right from wrong. If after being told the consequences of not wearing a helmet they still choose to not wear one because they are self conscious about being seen in one, or whatever reason, that is on them and no one else. Kids need to take responsibility for their own actions. If they aren't warned of the consequences that is the parent's fault. Or as the great Charles Barkley once said: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNOdFJAG3pE
  • 11 2
@mikeyfresh1990: How about you be a role model for others and not be so f*cking holier-than-thou
  • 7 2
@GBeard: "Kids need to take responsibility for their own actions." They kind of can't, though. Their brains (and particularly the prefrontal cortex, which is what stops you from doing all the dumb stuff that pops into your head) are not fully developed. This is why they're treated differently from adults under the law. It's also why teenagers, even the smart, well-raised ones, do dumb shit.

I agree it's the parents responsibility to raise their kids, but it's also not nearly as simple as "tell kids the risks and if they still do it, it's on them."
  • 2 0
@charliewentoutside: Can confirm: I was well-raised and did dumb shit without a helmet as a teenager. Had to get stitches for the nasty cut on my scalp.
  • 3 2
@charliewentoutside: Who’s responsibility is it then when a kid does something stupid? How is it not as simple as it’s on them when they do?

@barp : Was that your fault or someone else’s?
  • 1 4
@charliewentoutside: Also your argument doesn't really hold water for two reasons. First, the prefrontal cortex doesn't stop developing until age 24 or 25. Are you suggesting that everyone under this age is some sort of mindless dolt unable to take responsibility for their own actions? Second, as far as the law is concerned, yes we do give them the benefit of the doubt under age 18. They are still responsible for any crimes they commit though, not someone else, unless they were forcibly coerced.
  • 3 1
@GBeard: "Are you suggesting that everyone under this age is some sort of mindless dolt unable to take responsibility for their own actions?"

No. I love a good straw-man argument as well as the next guy, but what I'm "suggesting" is what I actually said: I agree it's the parents responsibility to raise their kids, but it's also not nearly as simple as "tell kids the risks and if they still do it, it's on them."
  • 1 2
@charliewentoutside: "They kind of can't, though." What does this statement mean if not eliminating their personal responsibility? Doesn't seems like a straw man if you literally wrote it.
  • 3 1
@GBeard: I'm not going to explain what "kind of" means, or get into a semantics argument on a bike website. I said what I said, interpret it however you like.
  • 1 2
@charliewentoutside: I know what “kind of” means but there isn’t really any grey area in responsibility. It either is or isn’t someones fault for something. It certainly didn’t seem like you were implying it was their responsibility.
  • 3 1
@GBeard: "It either is or isn’t someones fault for something" I don't agree that it's a simple binary like that when it comes to children, and that's what I was saying.
  • 11 0
To be clear, the moose was in a very non-aggressive, and docile stance throughout the “altercation.” (Ears we’re up and not swept back, hackles were not raised, and no huffin and puffing from the moose) Otherwise I would have thrown my helmet on and high-tailed it down the hill.

I got attacked by a very pissed off grouse on one of my trails so.....same thing? Stupid thing built its nest right next to one of the highest volume trails!

I once straight lined over a grouse in Jackson Wyoming. Fuck those things.
  • 9 0
I had one as attack my front tire last week. It's hard to believe how a species that small, aggressive and probably tasty to most predators has survived!
  • 5 0
@leviatanouroboro: no, eat them, don't eff them. gross

Better a grouse than a Tom turkey. Last turkey that chased me riding back from a trail only stopped to take on a Dodge Ram
  • 1 0
@darkcloud: yeah I can only imagine. To be fair this grouse won't actually come within 5 feet of you but it's still quite startling when a ball of something comes flying out of the bushes at you. Ostriches will rip your head clean off so I imagine mid sized birds would be pretty aggressive as well. Birds are crazy.
  • 6 0
Handy to know that moose require a wide berth. That one looked rather chilled an I'd have just let it wander by, but I didn't realise they can be aggressive. In Australia we just assume every animal is trying to kill us and ignore them unless they're attacking us.
  • 14 0
Moose are quite aggressive. I much rather deal with black bear in the wild then a moose.

I remember a Top Gear episode about a decade back that had a pedal powered paper mache Porsche, using an actual car must be much harder work.

Took mtb industry a decade to refigure out how to get a h20 cage back on bikes and e-skeleton guys already have a briefcase holder!

We used to ride motor through a junk yard on our way to the trails as kids. It was always entertaining to put along until the dogs came out and gave chase and then go hammer down and run to the edge of the property. My buddy Brian mis-judged it once and a rather angry mutt took the cuff off his pant.
