Slideshow: Golden Hour in the Whistler Alpine

Oct 13, 2018
by CamlinDesign

Whilst experiencing the sights and sounds of Whistler for the first time over the summer, Christo Gallagher and I decided we would like to forsake our warm and comfortable accommodation in the centre of town and spend the night somewhere much colder instead.

It wasn't hard to get Scottish expat brothers Calum and Ruairidh on board too and so whilst everyone else was watching the Whip Off we packed our bags and headed out of town.

I have heard that Lord Of The Squirrels and the trails up to it can be pretty busy during the day, at golden hour however we had the place to ourselves.

As usual, half my bag was taken up with camera gear so I shot when I could and here are the results:

Thanks to Christo, Calum and Ruairidh for the good times!

Isnt Whistler bear country? Is that something you would have to account for while sleeping up in the moutain?

Not sure why this is downvoted as its a good question. Hang you food or any other bear attractants in a tree preferably a distance from where you sleep and usually its fine

@leelau: Exactly, we left all food a good distance from where we slept and did have a can of bear spray with us too as we figured better to be safe than sorry! In reality I didn't sleep a wink either so I would have heard anything coming!

@CamlinDesign: Makes sense, didnt think of that, maybe a urban myth I think I remenber someone mention you should pee around the camp as well.

You could go through many cameras with the wealth of subject matter in Whistler. You did the place justice with the awesomeness of those shots. Incredible is a huge understatement for that nightshot. Kudos!

Not sure about that music choice. It made it seem like... the saddest ride ever.

"It was with heavy hearts that we embarked upon what was surely to be our final ride together. Pangs of great joy and of great sorrow rang through us all. To be witness to such breathtaking beauty, and to know that it would never be seen again."

Really great job! I only wish there were more photos, but I don’t blame you for wanting to shred more and shoot less.

Great picz! What kind of sleeping bags are those? Doesn't it get cold/wet without a tent?

a light weight bivi bag over them helps!

Love it, beautiful presentation! Would love to hear more about the logistics of such a trip.

Just pack stuff and ride up. It's a 3-6 hour loop from the whistler valley for most people who are capable of getting up there.

 Logistics?? What mammal said.
  • 20 0
 Logistics were as follows:

A-Line laps in the morning
Big lunch at Ingrid's Cafe
Pack bags with sleeping stuff
Fill our pockets with free Clif bars from their stand for our dinner
Ride until it got dark
Sleep (or lie on the ground for hours until the sun came up)
Ride back to Creekside as quickly as we could to satisfy our insatiable hunger at the Southside Diner

@CamlinDesign: the only problem is that you get to SouthSide way before they can legally serve ceasers.....

@nennarv: But if you're clever, you can stash river beers for a pre-breakfast snack.

@nennarv: not usually a problem for southside

Beautiful. The music was perfect. I get kind of tired of the heavy metal soundtracks.
