Photo Epic: Canadian Slip and Slide - Mont Sainte Anne World Cup DH, Qualifying

Aug 1, 2015
by Matthew DeLorme
Weather here in the northeastern corner of North America is subject to change. The old saying in the Maritimes goes, "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. It will change." Today was no exception to the rule. As temperatures and humidity have been building, so too has the chance of a deluge. We woke up to sunny skies, which quickly clouded over in the first twenty minutes of B practice. It threatened to rain all morning, and it even spat a bit here and there, but by the time practice was over the skies looked to be clearing. Things were bright and sunny when the Junior Men and Elite Women were on track and then, bang! Rain came down in sheets as the Elite Men started off. The first out of the gate had the best shot. Clean lines in the rock gardens didn't last long and things got slick fast.

Jacob Dickson qualified fastest for the Junior Men. Both Andrew Crimmins and Laurie Greenland had crashes in their runs that cost them precious time. Greenland came off on the run in to the rock roller, and Crimmins by the bottom. Both lost at least four seconds. For the women, Rachel Atherton was fastest of the day, almost five seconds up on Ragot. Manon Carpenter took third.

The Elite Men's race was an entirely different beast. While the women and juniors had clear skies, the men were faced with twenty minutes of heavy rain that started just before they got under way. Without tear-offs and mud spikes, many of the racers were under prepared for their runs. The first dozen down the track probably had the best chance before lines disappeared, rocks became slippery with mud, and visibility became seriously impaired. Aaron Gwin tried to put the power down and snapped his crank set. Loic Bruni crashed hard and did his run accompanied by some course tape. Bernard Kerr also had an off on the motorway under the gondola. Troy Brosnan kept the balance of speed and control to take the win, followed by Danny Hart and Marcelo Gutierrez. With a slight chance of scattered thunderstorms forecast for tomorrow who knows what will happen. The weather is fickle here, and the only certainty is that the racing will be interesting.

About the Photographers

Dave Trumpore • Age: 35 • Years Shooting: 4
Dave spent the bulk of the past 17 years racing professionally before realizing that despite qualifying for the random World Cup final here and there, the next generation was just way too fast and way more talented. Upon hanging up his racing boots in 2010, it would be a few years until Dave picked up a camera and started shooting the odd race here and there as a way to stay in touch with all the friends he had made over the years, and the rest as they say is history. In just a few years time his photos have graced the pages of just about every MTB magazine and major media outlet, while his commercial client list includes a who's who of the cycling industry, and he is lucky enough to shoot regularly with some of the best riders on the planet. Currently at Pinkbike, Dave shoots the Downhill WC and the Enduro World Series as well as contributing to the occasional editorial story.

Matthew Delorme • Age: 40 • Years Shooting: 8
Matthew DeLorme is just one of Pinkbike’s motley crew of World Cup Photographers. He currently lives out of a Ogio bag, and calls the road his home. Delorme works for Trek Bicycle, covering their MTB racing programs. He can usually be found laying in the dirt trackside, cracking jokes and saying things that make little to no sense. He enjoys capturing accessory moments and the journey every bit as much as catching the action shot.

Nathan Hughes • Age: 28 • Years Shooting: 2
Nathan Hughes was snared as mainstay Pinbike media crew for the 2013 World Cup season and has been trapped behind the lens and the keyboard ever since. In between the biggest bike events of the year Nathan can be found on client shoots, making far-off travel stories and trying to catch a moment to spin the pedals himself. A great appreciation of the wilderness, the fear of a normal life and the quest for the perfect picture will have him hooked and looking to raise the bar for years to come.

 Brendooooog!

What to say about Gwinner? rotten luck. Hopefully he gets a clean run tomorrow. Put some aluminium cranks on his bike perhaps? I heard those "shimano" ones are solid.

 gwins mechanical issues maaaaan
  • + 3
wasn't happening when he had solid mechanics with TWR.
  • + 35
He snapped a crank arm, I thought that would be an ideal situation for him, no?
  • + 21
 Too many protein shakes
  • + 1
something was wrong with the Blessed water, i guess Troy swapped for real dunked all alone !!
  • + 6
He simply must go chainless, drivetrain is slowing him down
  • + 5
TFreeman , he had brake fail with TWR
  • + 10
He should just install moto foot pegs but that would be unfair to the competition.
  • + 3
snapped crank was result of his chrash early on course so not an usual mechanical this time.
  • + 4
@TFreeman, yeah nothing like having your Shimano brakes fail during World Champs eh? Or Nico's Shimano chain snapping? I guess it's just called racing and shit happens to everyone, no matter what their sponsor.
  • + 1
@mtic: do you know if the crank snapped because he crashed or if he crashed because it snapped?

So far I haven't seen any reports that make it clear.
  • + 1
They make it seem like he finished his run. Did he? How could he?
  • + 0
 Gwin got a DNF.
  • + 4
Gwin really is the ultimate bike parts stress tester. If it can pass Gwin's unforgiving stress tests, it's ready for market. He should make his own quality control standard.
  • + 23
Sick framing on the airborne Rach shot. Looks super gnar. You just stare and wonder, "Where is the line?!?"
  • + 2
 Same.

If you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes, lol. Everywhere I travel people seem to think that saying is unique to where they live

bracing for shimano fan boys' comments about gwins crank
  • + 2
You don't have to be a Shimano fanboy to know that XO cranks are pretty much grenades. Heck, I think most SRAM fanboys outside of XC would prefer building up a bike with something else.

This incident proofs nothing. All kinds of carbon stuff fails these days, because it is hard pressed by weights of alloy counterparts. It is much stronger in the lab, but not so much on the trail. It surely can take some more beating than alu, but not much more while eing significantly more expensive. The only really strong thing about carbon is denial of people who paid for it and desperately try to motivate questionable expenditure. However in case of crankset, X0 costs as much as XT while XTR costs almost as much as 30% lighter RF Next LP
  • - 3
you see another good example how the carbon can let you down, you choose it for race and fails badly you loose the race !! so carbon or not ?? that has nothing common with the carbon emissions is it ?? Razz
  • + 2
For a racer it doesn't matter, carbon has so little if any increase in durability, but does not explode as people with cash minority complex suggest. He'd easily break alu crank as well. Sam Hill wrecked the massive Gravity crank arm in Vigo long time ago. Speculate!!!
  • + 2
My friend cashed carbon Fatbar prior to broken collar bone, but yep smashed few teeth as well that's where carbon fails to save life Smile Smile Smile
  • + 5
Did the actual carbon arm fail, or the metal spindle, or did the pedal treads tear out when he crashed? Blaming the carbon part might not be the most accurate thing to do.
  • + 6
As someone who's happily rocking a set of RF Next SL cranks, I have a hard time believing he would've exploded a set of Saints. And those old school Gravity cranks Sam mashed up...lol, you could bend those things by looking at them sternly.
  • + 8
Ratty looking ragged! I would live to se Danny hart take a win!
  • + 4
Just for the record, Jacob Dickson got a puncture 2/3 the way down and still qualified first. The way the junior top placers are written about seems takes away from Jacob's great performance.

Can anybody explain what is happening here?

Racers love modifying their stock tires. Cut down mud tires are the most common alterations. From this photo, it looks like a mechanic is taking a hot knife to the tire in order to modify the tread shape.

 That's a soldering iron not a knife.
  • + 4
Either way, it's a hot metal thing that he's using to change the shape of the treads with.
  • - 7
flag dfiler (Aug 1, 2015 at 7:04) (Below Threshold)
lol, not either way. It's a soldering iron he's using to shape the tread.
  • + 4
Wow you are stupidly dense. Look at the end of the tool and see the bladed edges? Note that it is not pointed, as per say a soldering iron typically is. Those blades are heated via an electrical current and that is known as a hot knife.
  • - 2
Look at the shape of it, similar tool has been used to shape the bullet that killed Kennedy, besides the fact that it wasn't Kennedy in the car, it was his double, the real Kennedy was killed on the Moon mission to Mars, he knew too much about Nixon and annexation of Czechoslovakia in 1937. Get your facts right before you speculate!
  • + 0
Looking at he photo closely again I see you're right, it's a knife. In my defense, you big meanies, it's shaped like a large soldering tip rather than a typical hot knife.
  • + 5
Gwin is a beast. No drivetrain is safe!
