Comprised of proven lightweight in-mold Aerocore™ construction, featuring Koroyd® technology, both helmet models utilize zonal ventilated protection in targeted impact areas to offer safeguarded coverage where and when it matters most. Built for the road, the Route offers optimized AirEvac ventilation through 18 vents and channels for added heat dispersion along any paved ride. For the trail-seeking wanderer, the Rover boasts 20 optimized vents and an integrated visor for all-mountain riding. Both helmets include AirEvacventilation, anti-microbial X-Static performance liners with Reactive Cooling, ultra light single layer webbing, and a VaporFit™ adjustable fit system for increased comfort.

The Route and Rover helmets represent a movement within Smith to bring the award winning technologies found in our popular Forefront and Overtake helmets to the everyday rider said Graham Sours, Smith Helmet Category Manager. We ride on the road, in the dirt, and commute by bike and these new models exemplify all of us as cyclists in our own unique way. Smith helmets are created to efficiently absorb direct impacts, and all colorways of the Route and Rover are available with an optional multi-directional impact protection system (MIPS®) lining that reduces rotational forces that the brain is exposed to during oblique impacts to the head. When combined with MIPS, the helmet liner is separated from the head by a low-friction slip plane that allows the head to slide during impact and may reduce instances of traumatic brain injuries. The low-profile helmet designs seamlessly to integrate with Smith’s collection of performance eyewear, including the best-selling PivLock interchangeable shields and the recently launched Squad MTB goggle.

The Route road helmet and Rover mountain bike helmet (MSRP $150, $180 with MIPS liner), along with the entire collection of Smith’s bike offerings, are available now at specialty retailers worldwide and smithoptics.com. About Smith: Originating from Sun Valley, Idaho, Smith was founded in 1965 with the invention of the first snow goggle featuring a sealed thermal lens and breathable vent foam.

They may look strange, but the Forefront is the most comfortable, and well fitting I've ever tried. If the fit on these is equally good, I'd gladly buy one - especially as the styling is significantly more conventional than the Forefront or Overtake.

Smith helmets could use a bit more venting but they are hands-down the best fitting helmets on the market (for my noggin). Great build quality too.

If they've kept the fit of the Forefront, these should be welcome additions to Smith's lineup. Nice work Smith!

@bogey: I upvoted you just for the use of the word "noggin".

was just thinking how ugly the forefront is this past weekend. These look a lot better!

The colors are sweet also! Really like the matte slate blue and matte maroon!

@racerfacer: Maybe they got somebody with actual functioning eyes to design these ones?

The forefront looks fine to me, I don't know what the thought process was on the overtake

 Doo-rag = MIPS ?
  • 2 0
@slowrider73: I've suffered from the very same and it hurts.
  • 2 0
It's probably better for the cooler environments since it looks like the venting remains poor. Look at the angle of the aerocore holes... they do not allow air to flow into the helmet unless you rotate your head so that the wind hits the holes straight on. I have the Forefront, it fits well, but cooks your noggin.

A ride partner was hauled off in an ambulance today; after pedal striking a tree stub that was cut 6'' from the ground and was hidden by overgrowth. The crash rendered His helmet split and Him a bad concussion with possible fractures on the body ! WEAR THAT HELMET!!!

Also, don't leave pungi sticks when doing trailwork.

Someone needs to check all the photos are uploaded before publishing. There is a glaring hole where a helmet should be near the bottom of the Route Helmet section.

The bit just after the first three pictures, they should have saved that for April Fools.

Really? Why would we care what a bartender or finance person think about a bike helmet? Oh a hipster bartender likes biking! oh finally some mainstream acceptance within the finance community, can't wait to be cool now. Or do I need that helmet first?

The new Lazer helmet is the best fitting helmet I've tried, and I own a Forefront
  • 1 0
Is that the one with the optional chin guard?
  • 1 0
@deli-hustler: no I tried on the the Lazer Z1 mips which is a road helmet , very comfortable!! It seemed comparable to the Smith which is why I made the comparison.
