Social Round Up: Glacier Carnage & More From the Megavalanche

Jul 12, 2021
by James Smurthwaite
The Megavalanche returns for 2021 and with it comes the usual carnage that you'd expect from a mass start glacier race. While Morgane Such and Stefan Peter took the wins, behind them a lot of racers didn't have it so easy. Here are some highlights from social media.

Robin Goomes's POV from the Women's Race

With an appearance at Formation and now the Mega, Robin Goomes seems to be making it her mission to ride only the gnarliest events in 2021.

Trackside footage from the Challenger class

The Challenger class is for racers who didn't make the cut to qualify for the main race. While they tackle the glacier more trepidatiously than their counterparts in the main race, there's no less carnage on the hillside. Keep an eye out for the rider tackling one of mountain biking's most brutal races on a shopping bike.

What happens when you get hundreds of riders flying down a glacier into a slick 90° turn with only a snow bank to stop them? Carnage.

Here's how it's actually done, watch Bron's full run, here.

One of those events that is on the bucket list- but then again maybe not. It looks so crazy.

Just make sure it's last on the bucket list…

The trick is to make sure it is the last item on the bucket list, as you might not get the other items once you take the start of this one...

The first turn looks INSANE! From 60km/h to 0 in 0.01sec, all on top of each other with the bikes, bumping into each other like HARD! Holy molly!

@TheCorminator: or not try to go mach 1000 in the first turn

I watch a bunch of these at night. Love the fast guys up front, but the back/mid pack racing is where most of the action is. Best race on Earth.

Hell yeah! I do the same thing. Also I know half the trails in the alps due to watching owlaps late at night.

@Afterschoolsports: Yeah, Owlaps are great for sure.

 @Afterschoolsports:
Me too. When our baby daughter can't sleep we watch owlaps. I feel like I could race the megavalanche blind.

Pinkbike why you wanna redirect us to Instagram?

 think it's a insta rule

It might be due to a plugin on your browser or a browser setting. It stops Instagram tracking your browsing behaviour while on Pinkbike. It's a good thing.

@thingswelike: it's also good because I don't want to follow Instagram. A website is not enough? Creating articles based on material from other creators (material external to the website) I find it of low quality

@inonyme: It is. They have no control over how the IG iframes ask you to watch on Instagram after playing it once, which is a classic greedy Mark Cuckerberg move to try and get you to his platform.

Marin's Queen of Manuals Martha Gill, who came second, said she'd post her GoPro footage shortly. She's at @marthagmarthag on the Instagram. Sounds like she was top 3 the the whole time and Morgane Such did a horizon job so not much passing, but a good result. I agree it's a shame this conflicted with EWS.

Such a shame that it (and mount of hell) clashed with the ews. It would have been great to see borges, oton, and all the other regulars who also do ews, race it.

Here is the real show if all pros and media would take part... So stupid to miss this show for so many decades...

Sik Mik going into 4th after escaping the first turn pile up then slotting into third pass Bron. But what happened? He let him by. Anyone know?

i don't know but i watched the run of the guy who finished 11th , and they (with the 10th guy) reached and passed him easily on a flat section. Mick cheered them, looks like he just chilled or had a minor mechanical ?

@Clem-mk: I loved the way he was patting them on the back as they passed him. Class act.

Bron simply reeled him in that pedaling section in the gravel when they came off the glacier. Check out his full race run starting at about the 3min mark:

Gas in the tank by the looks of it.

Great race by Peter. My favorite helmet cam is the one by the Deakinator a few years back when he got pitched OTB at the sharp turn.

Brings back some good/bad/crazy memories. Kudos to the dude who qualified for the Challenger on a BMX, nuts!
