 From Dave Watson at Sombrio:

Sombrio & Steve Romaniuk – Keep it pro!
In an aim to keep things professional - I’d like to set the record straight.
• Steve’s contract with Sombrio expired after the 2007 season; I chose to not renew it.
• But, come 2008 I said I’d do my best to come up w/ some money for him later that year. We had no deal & it wasn’t even a gentleman’s agreement. I heard from Steve 2 maybe, 3 times that year, “hey doode, what’s up w/ getting paid” and I continued to respond, I’ll do my best to get you a deal – but no promises”
• Meanwhile we were still providing him all the products he needed, w/ no strings attached. He didn’t have to wear Sombrio, and in a lot of cases wasn’t. He was free to shop for a clothing deal.
• So, there is no doubt that Steve is one of the raddest all round riders on the planet, and has done some remarkable moves on a bike – but, our team was growing, and I didn’t see a place for him in 2008 or 2009.
• Steve, wasn’t listed on our team in 2009 – we’d moved on. Steve, from what I understand now rides for Dakine on their flow program, meaning he doesn’t get paid.
• Now, to get into it. 1) Blasting a company on line serves a purpose, but only in the context of having a legitimate box to stand. In this case, Steve didn’t have an agreement in place w/ Sombrio like he had in the 2004-2007 seasons.
Now, I can’t help but add some personal notes here, as I’m feeling pretty beat up’ about this post, in addition to Sombrio being hammered publicly. Now, I’m 32 years young, and started this company when I was 21 years old. There was no Freeride industry then, and I had to race World Cups full time to keep sponsors, all while building a company amongst giants that could one day become a leader. As, that was what I wanted to do!
