.... as my son would say, they look like a bunch of "try hard hipsters". All about the "look and style" of the edit; bikes, gear, cloths, aero press coffee! ... nothing about the back country scenery........maybe there wasn't any just logging activity. Sorry, kind of reminds me of all those urban posers driving around in big 4 wheel drive SUVs who've never actually driven on snow or dirt!

the whole thing annoyed the shit out of me.

"waypoints is about riding bikes where people wouldnt normally consider riding bikes... places most people wouldnt even consider riding their cars"

how f*cking pretentious is that? that is the definition of mountain biking but somehow they think they are better for doing it on a road bike.

and my god the way they talk is so annoying!

 props bro
  • 3 1
Agreed. GT was trying wayyy too hard with this one.
  • 2 2
"I think they were pretty surprised to see us out there, specially on bikes", yeah, because loggers have never seen people riding their roads, on bikes....
  • 1 0
haha, all those roadie haters. Yeah, try making a slick video edit of your trip without making it seem a bit poser. Fact is, they took their bikes and rode >200km and >5000m elevation.
As a European I find that much cooler than lifting your bike on your pickup and riding 200km to that one super sick epic mental jump and hitting it with your Troy Lee Pyjamas and putting some landscape shots inbetween just to show how close to nature you are.
(btw, I ride 70% all-mountain, 20%DH, 10% roadbiking, and quite a lot of commuting as well)

 @MatthewCarpenter

im so glad you touched the subject of troy lee pijamas, im considering of custom making some that say BOOTYLICIOUS on the lower back. what is your opinion about this?

please bare in mind that I dont care about your opinion as a human being but as a "european."

I didn't realise they made you pick one type of bike to ride forever when you cross the border.

thought this was gonna be a super sik street edit with many grinds and pegs.
  • 4 1
I thought it was going to be a bunch of people grinding

Thoroughly odd video, odd tone, odd choice of gear and tires but all in all looks pretty fun. Tough to feel like you are having a genuine adventure with a camera crew though.
  • 7 3
Riding mtb stuff on a road or CX bike can be quite fun actually, bringing back the feeling you had just starting out as a kid..
  • 10 1
If your gonna ride a bike through the mountains, beautiful landscapes of BC to go camping why do it on the road on a road bike? Why not piece together a bunch of different trails and logging roads and do it on a trail bike?

GT is promoting their new bike the Grade. And also trying to promote a new category of bike and riding. "Enduroad" as they call it. Or "Adventure Road" as Specialized calls it with their new Diverge bike. This new category of gravel grinders are trying to appeal to the cooler crowd who isnt quite hip to Touring bikes. For people who want a mix of a Roubaix and a CX bike. They are basically just road bikes with thru axles and clearance for 35mm tires. Unless you are Cannondale with the new Slate, which is a crazy new wierd bike. a mix of a race HT, a cx bike, touring bike and road bike with 650 wheels. Who the f*ck know what their thinking.

But basically this is the bike industry trying to convince us we need another bike in our fleet. They are cool but ill stick with my CX bike thanks.

Honestly I enjoyed this video. I somewhat understand the "weird" choice of equipment used but to be honest, sometimes it's fun to use a different tool for the job. Gravel grinders on fireroads isn't that uncommon nowadays.

The video is pretty cliche at times though. There are so many videos similar to this where "the road less traveled" and "it's not about the destination but rather the journey itself" that makes me wanna throw up like anyone else but I still feel that no matter what, it's an adventure to be had. The way they chose to do it is in their own way (or the sponsor) and it's pretty rad to have done it. Who wouldn't want to end up at an awesome hot springs hanging out with a hot girl (and another dude...)?

Regardless it was a good watch.

Wouldn't panniers or a Bob trailer be a better choice? why use backpacks?
  • 30 0
better yet, why not just toss all your gear in the car with the film crew?
  • 3 0
Seriously, those ridiculous backpacks are why they couldn't finish the trip in 2 days
  • 2 0
Because Mission Workshop was the only way to finish their pretentious hipster ride.
  • 1 0
Mission Workshop makes some pretty damn good bags and apparel though haha

as somebody who doesn't drink coffee (hence my confusion and curiosity)..... do all coffee shops look that hipster?
  • 2 0
in vancouver they do. barista tat coverage minimum requirements, etc. the chocolate croissant there is pretty good though.
  • 5 3
Not all,but new independent vendors usually tries to bring something "hip" to the decor.
I personally like a neat set-up,rough hewn recycled wood and what not, but if the coffee is shit they place won't last too long.
There is a similar movement in Vancouver with Craft Beer right now.

Yes it means sometimes sitting beside someone who looks like they are a porn director/gold prospector/proto-type Dr.suess character in a funky/artsy/to cool to fart-sy setting.
Also full arm sleeves of tattoos do not mean years of prison and crime anymore either, just a possible east Vancouver address. (Rental)

It also gets a keg side seat to some really really *!?$ing great beers (and cofee) coming out of Vancouver B.C right now.

Then you go ride your bike.

Come visit you will love it.

Why is everyone so cranky? These three hipsters went on a cool bike ride. They made it fun by dressing in stealth ninja suits and bringing cheese. Don't begrudge them their fun just because you would do it another way. Instead get out there and do it!
  • 8 3
What's with the black??? they all backend out, ninja style... think outside the box, get some color in your life!

Cool trip though, I'm sure it was awesome to do something like this.
  • 1 0
I always thought doing back end out was more MTB technique then roadie technique..
  • 7 0
I still don't know what waypoints is after watching the video...
  • 2 1
 If you have to ask...
  • 5 0
Dare I say it? I think instead of doing that trip on a CX bike I'd do it on a nice 27.5+ bike.

Just finished circling lake Champlain. As a mtb rider I have to admit a 5 day camping road ride was a blast.

Raw edit from start to stop. m.youtube.com/watch?v=PgigaMJ5k0U

250km? I road that far before it was cool!

I've done similar trips on the west and east coasts of the United States, very cool experiences and with a similar 3 person group both times. The @#$%#n constant sipping from flasks in this video is so staged it's painful. We drank between the 3 of us about 12-18 beers a night on our trips though. From sleeping on remote beaches on Catalina Island in California, to sleeping on retired bridge sections of US route 1 in the Florida Keys - it's a trip format I highly recommend if you can plan out 10 days off in your future. These hipsters may have given bike packing a foul taste - but it's a pretty bad ass way to explore a foreign land.

The ad placement was a bit nauseating as well - but I guess we approached our trips with a different sponsor... Walmart. We literally bought the bikes at the start, and returned them at the end. Thanks Walmart! (Only possible in the US of A I believe - if any of you Euro's have similar big box stores with 90-day no questions asked return policies let me know! Looking to do France/Spain next year!)

How is it possible that they only rode 65 km on day two, part of which was on paved road?
I guess they were too busy filming 'product placement' shots.Oh, and bringing a brie wheel doesn't help!

I thought this was some sort of parody video most of the way through.

But no really though, that looks like a crazy fun trip.
  • 1 1
I actually spoke with one of the riders about the trip. Sounded like it was pretty epic to me. Especially the fun stuff that ain't in the video.
