Spotted: Greg Callaghan's Devinci with Prototype Fox Suspension and Shimano Drivetrain

It's that time of year again. The first races of the season are upon us and new bikes, teams, and partnerships are starting to trickle out into the open. While it hasn't yet been announced, it appears that the Devinci EWS team is going to be on Fox suspension and Shimano drivetrains this season as Greg Callaghan's bike was seen fully kitted out in Santiago, Chile, at the Andes Pacifico race by one of our eagle-eyed readers.

The Fox fork looks to be very similar to the fork we spotted at the end of last season during EWS Zermatt and speculated to have 38mm stanchions. It carries obvious "prototype" and RAD markings on it. At that time, Craig Richey, Director of Brand & Product Marketing at Fox had stated, "A 38 would fit nicely into the FOX naming convention so let the rumors swirl. We’re always working on new suspension products to help riders go faster and push their limits."

photo

Also notable is the prototype rear shock. It bears some resemblance to an X2 but with the adjustments moved around and a pedaling platform switch mounted on the top of the reservoir, separate from the compression and rebound adjustments opposed to how it's currently combined with the compression adjustment.

photo

Lastly, it is obvious that the Devinci team is going to be using Shimano for their braking and shifting duties this season as the bike was kitted out with Shimano's XTR brakes and drivetrain.

Of course, details are sparse at this point but prototypes aside, this comes as a big change after the Devinci teams have been using RockShox and SRAM for the last ten years.

We reached out to Devinci and were told the following:

bigquotesWe will have a full team release after our team camp at the end of Feb so we will discuss some details there. For now, we are just looking forward to seeing Greg racing and the season getting started.

We'll have updated information when it becomes available.

If you look at the last photo they actually made it more potatoey. It's not just a cropped version of the 3rd image.

@PhilKmetz: At this point PB should likely hire Waki to draw prototypes in the wild. Probably better quality.

@sherbet: honestly... I’d never draw a fork with round arch unless someone told me “draw the ugliest lowers you can come up with”. If I wanted to draw a caricature of this 38, I’d made a tapered 1”-1,1/8” steerer... because this doesn’t look small enough!

@WAKIdesigns: I mean this in all sincerity; if you start doing sketches of people's bikes I would probably buy one from you. Your work is fly. Seeing you do a series of production bikes would probably be one of my favourite ongoing PB front page series, if it happened.

I think I got -4 props just for mentioning you there, but I think people often forget that for better or for worse, you are one of us, and you are here to stay.

Ride on dude!
  • 27 7
@sherbet: Dude, I agree. I don't get why Waki gets all the hate. He's a knowledgeable guy who loves riding and is not afraid to speak his mind or defend his opinions. On top of that, he's also a kick-ass artist. Pinkbike would be a worse place without his inputs.

 Because Kashima is a hoax
  • 3 5
@ceecee: kashima isnt necessarily smoother, it is just a harder longer lasting finish. A racing buddy of mine has the black stations on his 49, and the fork gets rebuilt every race. The black finish is starting to ware through. Good news is, Fox warranties that stuff. As a consumer though, I would go Kashima for longevity for seals and life of the fork; however to your point, there is a negligible performance differance if any. Similar to the Grip damper. The Grip 2 is just built to last longer. The performance (when set up correctly) is identical out of the box.
  • 8 0
@jomacba: The Kashima is peeling off of both stanchions on one of my forks, I've never seen that happen with black ano.
  • 2 0
@velodonata: or quickly becomes pitted one bad batches.
  • 3 0
@jomacba: It was supposed to be a joke. How about some tech instead:

www.kashima-coat.com/global/service/kashima-coat
  • 1 1
@velodonata: Fair enough. It's definitely not bullet proof. I'm simply speaking in a comparative manner. I've seen every type of finish fail. However; Alot of factors come into play, like how often do you do a lower service, condition of bushings, type of dust wipers used, and potential for manufacturing defects.
  • 2 0
@ceecee: my mistake, its difficult to pick up through text lol. For the record, I was not trying to call you out. I do agree on the performance side of things.
  • 1 1
@ceecee: I hate the kashima to a new level. I could care less if it makes your bike twice as fast. It looks like a toddler threw up on your fork
  • 1 0
@jomacba: It's peeling close to the top of the stanchions, above any possible wear. It's definitely a manufacturing issue. And both stanchions have the same problem.
  • 1 0
 @velodonata: That's strange, I've never seen that before. That's definitely a defect.
  • 34 6
If you can get close enough for a picture, you can get a caliper around those stanchions. Enough already.
  • 5 5
Ever thought Greg or Fox wouldn't allow it?
  • 23 3
Right! Since everybody has calipers in their pockets all the time ready to measure anything...
  • 9 0
Absolutely, and a portable xray machine to check if they are air or coil.
  • 3 0
just take enough photos to do some photogrammetry and BOOM no calipers needed
  • 2 2
Just scaled from some screenshots in CAD, assuming 170mm travel is at full extension stanchions look to be 40mm. !!
  • 1 1
@bigtim: the one and only barrier to this is, of course, that the stanchions are metal. You would need Superman instead to see inside the stanchions.
  • 1 0
 Suspense sells!
  • 2 0
@Beazy: If you ever get to fly with your bike and see the image as it's put through the airport scanners you'll see that they can see through metal tubes. • 15 5
Fox had a hard core fork . The Park 180 . And it had three flavour s . Coil , air and Talas . Back in the good old days when we had choice. I'm going to laugh my ass of if they make a 38 mill stantion fork and put a girly 15 mil axle on it.

A DHX2 with properly shimmed rebound circuit, great external and internal adjustability nicely rolled in a light and usable package. (also easy to work on, bleed and repair). And there is option for either Air or progressive SLS Coils. Sounds like a winner to me...

My first fs bike had an original Fox Float 32 100mm travel. It was so much plusher that anything else and the chassis was so much stiffer than anything else with that amount of travel at the time. It felt like you could ride over anything with it, and now they use the 32 chassis for XC racing, lol.
  • 4 0
I also spy... new Fox dropper post? New Shimano pedals?
  • 6 0
Those pedals with unpolished cages are the real prototypes here, Fox's stuffs are pre-press release show.
  • 4 0
Looks like Fox is really leaning into the steampunk look...
  • 4 0
Is that a new water bottle mount
  • 2 1
No world breaking news. Just a separat climb switch and different external Organisation. Better give an old x2 an avy, push or mst mod with new main piston, custom shims and different springs. Will improve it far more
  • 2 3
I wonder if the change of location for the compression lever is indicative of relying more heavily on a shim stack for damping rather than the miserable poppet valve. The Float X2 was probably the worst investment that I made, where as a Super Deluxe with a tuned shim stack completely blew it out of the water. Would be a great change in the right direction.
  • 2 0
Most definitely it will have a proper shimmed mid valve.
  • 2 0
Pfft... my X2 goes to 300.

Is there a black dial right on the top of that shock as well? I see the blue grip style sweep dial but it kinda looks like a black dial right at the top of the shock as well.
  • 1 1
Yes, it looks like a 1 - 0 switch. Climb switch?
  • 1 1
my guess is a Bottom out/ ramp up adjuster
  • 1 2
@SickEdit: oh good call. That would make sense.
  • 8 1
Doesn't look to be a dial at all. Just a bolt to secure the shock shaft into the trunnion mount.
  • 7 1
The small bolt on the top of the trunnions is the bleed port. Current x2 trunnion shocks have the same thing
  • 2 1
 It's the bleed port
  • 2 0
This same shock is on Gwin's Intense.
  • 2 0
Same? Like a coil non trunion shock?
  • 1 0
@fracasnoxteam: yes. It probably doesn't have the lock out but this is the shock that Fox riders have been testing since last year.
  • 3 3
Hmmm, doesn't look like a dial to me. I think it's a solid part of the trunion to give it strength, although there is some type of threaded cap there in the middle.
  • 3 1
Naaah it's not symmetrical. It's some type of dial. If you zoom in you can see it a little better.
  • 5 3
I retract this comment. Upon turning brightness up on phone it's clearly a brace.... My bad!
  • 2 1
So does this mean a possible. Midyear product change for the 2020 Spartans. Hmmm me likey that idea bring on the FOX!!!

 That fender, tho.
Anyone read the logo on the front, through the potato lens?

Looks more like an ohlins. Like the current x2 which was basically identical to the cane creek db, also ohlins (licensed)

Richie Rude has also been using that shock
  • 1 0
what holds the fender, if its a bolton fender then good job fox !
  • 5 0
Doesn't the current gen 36 have a bolt on fender option already?
  • 1 0
@bendrew: Yes, made by syncros and RRP also make them.
  • 1 0
@bendrew: fox doesn't make a bolt on fender but syncros does. I have one and it's great.
  • 3 1
@Mondbiker: the synchros doesnt really protect the seals though which the main reason I use fenders
  • 1 0
@nicoSB: buy RRP then? You know, the one that is pictured above?
  • 2 0
@nicoSB: yeah, the synchros is such a parody, lets be honest, a fender does a better job a t protecting my 1500€ fork seals than protecting my face, thats why i use it
  • 1 0
@Mondbiker: thanks I didnt know this model, my bad
  • 1 0
@nicoSB: No probs man, glad to help Wink
  • 1 0
@nicoSB: exactly, synchros has a perfect cutout for all the crud to get on the seals, RRP is much better

  • 3 0
I'm not sure I have ever seen a RAD shock or fork from fox have The Kashima treatment.
  • 23 2
It's just marketing. Not necessary when testing
  • 25 1
@saturnine: shhhhhhh you are going to kill a lot of dreams saying shit like that haha.
  • 2 3
Its just too expensive to anodize the proto, also not needed to test chassi stifness
  • 8 0
@Uchwmdr: They can afford to make a new casting, internals, forge a new crown and not pop the stanchions in the anno tank with a production batch? I’m sure there’s a reason they don’t Kashima coat prototypes, but I doubt it’s cost
  • 4 0
hope the factory rad is black. orange has had its time.
  • 5 1
@maxyedor: The reason is kashima doesn´t work any better than black ano...In fact, it works worse for guys who don´t run their forks dry.
  • 1 0
Could be part of the facility’s production options. If the prototype is processed in a non production facility they might not be able to kashima there. Highly unlikely tho...
  • 1 0
@TheBearDen: Just make your own RAD sticker for the Palosebo affect!
  • 1 0
@jrocksdh: What are you talking about?

Black has stayed in the line. You don't have to buy an orange fork. Lots of people want them. Race teams run them... it's called branding. If every race team was running black forks the suspension brands would lose brand presence.

The RAD forks we've been seeing for a long time have been black on black. The ones leaked at the end of last season were black on black. The RAD49 forks were black with Kashima. Even back in 2014 they were black.
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: im talking factory forks...forcing team riders to ride orange.
  • 2 0
@jrocksdh: Wasn't Richie Rude on a black fork for Northstar last year? And Val Di Fassa? Saw Richter on black.

Regardless.... it's kind of a mute point. How many factory supporter SRAM teams do you see not running red? You think Isabelle has an option?

It's only a matter of time before any factory supported Ohlins guys are on yellow. It's already happening in DH.

These guys are laying stake to their colors. When you see a podium it's real easy to figure out what frame sponsors they have... apparel, the same. Helmets... generally pretty easy... suspension... if it's black, how easy is it to tell? DT Swiss? FOX? RS? Ohlins? Suntour? Marzocchi? Formula? Etc.... all offer black forks and all have riders riding black forks.

Odds are the podium will generally have factory supported riders on them... that's why those teams usually ride the color of their brand. Some like it some don't.
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: use an orange sticker. lame how so many bike mfgs have to figure out how to blend that fork in with the rest of the bike. u must own one lol
  • 3 0
@jrocksdh: Sticker colors matched to frame colors are common and done on a lot of bikes. Not really sure why it's hard for people to wrap their heads around this concept of colors. You think people go to Coke and say... hey... we want your can in our movie but the red clashes. Can you make your can purple? They have a proprietary red.

Orange came out and people were like... woah what the hell is that. But you knew immediately it was a FOX fork. Now pretty much every frame and parts manufacturer makes parts to match with the orange. It created it's own segment. That's called marketing power.

And no... no I do not have an orange fork. I have a red fork and a black fork and a purple fork.
  • 1 1
 @onemanarmy:
uh huh... Go on...
... Cop
What happened next?

Yea I meant to say spartan. I have the Ltd and can’t stand the suspension. I also changed the brakes before I swung a leg over it to xt 4 pot. @cheetamike:
  • 2 0
@AJ420: I test rode the GX Carbon 29er. It climbed well , but I fought it on the down. I,m a Fox suspension , Shimano drivetrain . And brakes I run Guide RS . It,s a well thought out bike. Looking forward to updates. With Greg the man now , I,m sure he will have input moving forward. Switching to Fox and Shimano is a great start.
  • 1 0
Yea I can live with the gx eagle it not terrible and it climbs well. Well until you breath on it then it skips and carries on. But the suspension is what I really want to change. I have most of my settings full open to emulate a fox in the beginning and mid stroke. I’m pretty close to ripping it apart and drilling out the gates to be a little plusher. @cheetamike:
  • 1 0
@AJ420: u mean that fox is kinda stiff? Im thinking between a float x2 ans rs super delluxe ultimate on anew bike. Currently on dvo topaz.
  • 1 0
Other way around. I find the fox nice and plush without a harsh feel and deflection. I have a 40/x2 on my dh and love it. Granted that’s a dh but my 180mm lyrik feels like it bounces and deflects a lot. Great for flow trails but I don’t like it on tech stuff. Feels like a pogo stick on meth with bipolar disorder. Personal preferences are different for everyone but I for one hate my fork and dislike my rear shock. I ride mostly Vernon and Invermere with a little whistler in there too. And it’s a little sketchy on fire roads when it bounces out of a small divot. @Uchwmdr:
