Spotted: New Ibis Enduro Bike at EWS Zermatt

We were going back through our EWS coverage from the weekend and some of our eagle-eyed commenters spotted what appears to be a new Ibis enduro bike, perhaps a Mojo, ridden by Bex Baraona, in Zermatt.

This new bike seems to be very similar to the Mojo HD4 that Baraona has been riding all year with the swoopy frame and distinctive bridge between the top tube and down tube, however, there are a few differences that jump out. The first we can spot is the cable routing, which now has two inlets and no plastic caps on the head tube, and there's also the lower link. This compact link looks very similar to the one that was born on the Ripmo and later carried over to the Ripley. With those bikes, the link was designed to add stiffness and subtract weight.

The Mojo was last updated in May 2017 so is approaching two and a half years since its last serious overhaul, so it wouldn't be unexpected to see an update. The bike pictured here doesn't look like a total revision though, rather more of a refinement. When the Ripley was updated in April this year, it got a new lower linkage, new cable routing, a metric shock update, and some geometry tweaks, so we could likely expect some of the same here. With the Ripmo and Ripley both taking care of the 29" side of things we expect this bike to remain as a 27.5" bike, but with current trends, a 29" front/ 27.5" inch rear staggered-wheel-size bike also isn't beyond the realm of possibility. There's also the chance that this is simply a test mule and it may never see production.

We have reached out to Ibis for more information and we'll relay that and any other details if and when we get them.

 I truly believe only a select few PB staff are privy to new bike info around release time, but the proximity to each other of 'Spotted' and 'First Ride / Unveiling' articles for the same bike is sometimes comical.

 @MTBrent: Usually things are kept under wraps until the week or two before launch, and then "leaked" on purpose. It is just good marketing, and sometimes media will hear rumors about a bike before they see it, so they have some pieces of the puzzle already and then spotting the bike completes the picture. No one is trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

 Maybe it’s just the skeptic in me, but I can envision a phone call. from Ibis: hey Pinkbike, look back through these photos and see if you spot something.

That said, the HD4 is due for a refresh: still with a short reach and a slack SA by today’s standards. I’d be tempted to update from my Ripmo if it was a true mullet HD4.

 An interesting observation is Sam Hill has been racing the new carbon Mega 290 for the last 3-4 EWS races and barely any media publications have noticed/cared.

Imagine that. The EWS champion of the last 3 years and no one apparently has noticed (though a video comparing the Nukeproof and Canyon did appear a few days ago).

Guess it's who you know.

Among others.

It's just that after he got it, he didn't do particularly well (for him, meaning he wasn't winning everything), so they couldn't run adds along the lines of "Best bike EVER!" Or 29ers rule, or whatever. Thus, the hype kind of died out.

 6 months ago EVERY bit of Ibis related comment section was full of comments about them being dentist bikes and the like...

Add one (very nice and keenly priced) aluminium bike to your line up and nothing but praise! Hopefully a good few other bike brands will catch on...

 I just replaced the lower bearings on my Mojo HD3... it took 3 weeks just to get the bearings in. If the bushings are easier to source I would argue that it is an improvement.

 @tcmtnbikr: Ibis offers lifetime warranty on the bushings, I've been riding and racing my Ripmo all season with zero issues. More than I can say about some other bikes I have owned.

 @DARKSTAR63: The issue with bushings isn't's performance. Bushings always have more static friction than a bearing and are prone to squeaking. The industry moved away from bushings long ago for that reason.

 @tcmtnbikr: Squeaking isn't an issue with the bushings in the Ibis frames. Performance-wise you probably get more static friction than a fresh set of bearings, but bearings deteriorate quicker than most people care to replace them, so I wouldn't be surprised if the average used bushing-equipped Ibis is at least on par (performance-wise) with the average used bearing-equipped bike.

 @tcmtnbikr: Yea I'm familiar with those concerns. No noise from mine and response from the rear suspension is more than adequate.There is no way to directly compare to how the bike would feel with bearings in place, but I've ridden many bikes, and I'm quite happy with the performance.

 @DARKSTAR63: Bushings are shyt. I have myself CADed and get made in China a set of suspension links for my Rune MY2009 in 2017. A set that uses ENDURO MAX ball bearings, instead of that plastic crap which first brushed the black ano layer on both main shafts, then seized on shafts and made the bushings themselve spin within the mainframe bores which must have been fixed professionally.
And the difference? My old DHX5.0 shock has 14 clicks of Propedal and I had to move it from 4 clicks (open) to 10-12 clicks from open. I close it fully for commuting, and it still is more responsive than back then on almost open. Just because so much stiction was removed from the system. There is literally NO LAG in suspension links anymore. It even amplifies the nature of coil spring, because the rear suspension is much responsive. I can assure you anyone would feel the different nature of that bike.
Never will I go back on bushings. They are as expensive as standard bearings, and require much more maintenance. The only noticeable advantage over ball bearings is they dampen some vibrations. On ball bearings the bike feels a bit like on steel rails.

 @fluider: I'm not sure if sweeping generalizations about bushings are fair. Speaking to the topic at hand, my Ibis lower link has been trouble free and moves nicely. I took it apart once to service it thinking I should yet found it to be well sealed, clean, and greased. It is sealed against the elements with rubber o rings that seem to do their job. The small bearings used for mountain bike suspension get rough pretty quickly and require replacement when they do. This link is fully serviceable in minutes. It's not the best for all applications which is why bearings are found elsewhere on the frame.

 @fluider: Seems like what you mean to say is "The implementation of bushings on my Rune is shyte."

Ibis's implementation is pretty smart. They only use bushings a pivots that see high torque and minimal movement, i.e. lower link.

I've been riding the hell out of a Ripmo in the PNWet for ~18 months and just removed the shock to check rear suspension, everything's working great. Zero noise, smooth movement, low stiction.

 @NoriDori: I race the bike pretty hard, and in wet conditions, so yea a full season without even needing to take apart the link is a "so far so good" from me. I never used the word exceptional but check in with me next year !

 @DARKSTAR63: Good to hear. Still, better take a time to see the pivot bolts completely and if there will be slick and sticky grease like matter on the sliding contact area, better replace the bushings.

 @EckNZ: I sent my CADs to the only company (out of 5 or Cool which responded to my query through :-). They were willing, very cooperative and patient. After receiving money from me, they en-queued my job into production and after a week from receiving money parts were made. After another week I received small and heavy package at Bratislava airport.

 I'd like to see the Taco colors go away on bikes. Tho, the new "Army Green" on the TRD Pro might look pretty sick with the right highlights. I like the design look of this bike better than the Ripmo/Ripley stuff. Nice lines with a nod to the past gen bike. Those shimano rotors sure look cool too!! **glares at Centerlines**

 Get Galfer rotors. They will be going on sale around late November. I'm going to stock up again.

 @endlessblockades: I'm behind on the Galfer stuff. Whats the big draw? I'm on SRAM Code brakes with centerline 180mm rotors. Sometimes thinking about bumping the front to 200mm (maybe rear too??). Riding 29er 150mm bike.

 @Svinyard: I like that the quality is good, the price is good (especially during the sales), they're made in Spain and US customers can buy online from Galfer USA which is in Nevada and therefore tax-free for most of us. They come in a variety of sizes including the bigger ones 223+ that seem to be the next trend. I got some floaters for the DH bike. The only downside is their website navigation - a nightmare til you figure it out (last time I checked). They make rotors for many applications - moto/ATV etc, so bikes aren't their main concern on the website.

Anyone else here run them?

 @Svinyard: Should have added that I run them on Guide RSC and TRP brakes no problems. Galfer says you must use their pads or void warranty. I've used SRAM and Trucker Co pads no problem.

 @endlessblockades: Iam on them for a month now, non floating version, I love them, plenty of power and even though it's probably just my personal feeling, I'm somehow getting more feedback thru levers which helps me to avoid unwanted skids

 @Svinyard: I read somewhere that you're a big guy, well I'm a small guy and I prefer 200mm front and rear. Don't know how big guys can live with such small rotors!

 @gnarnaimo: I'm tall but only 190lbs so big isnt maybe the right word (unfortunately for my HS basketball career). Sounds like 200mm rotors are in my future. I've done ok with my SRAM Codes helping with extra power but that can only go so far when it gets nasty. Thx guys.

Truth! Though I think the new Ripley is a better looking frame than the Ripmo's. I think it's the way the top tube tapers near the HT and too much "waviness". Alu Ripmo is a little better. But the HD's/mojo style is classic/sweet!!

They're all awesome bikes though!

 Careful with the naming, PB. Ibis has both "Mojo" (mid-travel trail bike, currently on version 3) and "Mojo HD" (long-travel "enduro" bike, currently on version 4) models. So having an article about a possible new enduro bike, and calling it "Mojo" makes no sense. If this is a new enduro bike, it's a Mojo HD (HD5, to be specific).

 The lower bushing (aka journal bearing) is perfect for the application. The load is distributed over a greater surface, less twisting and shear. Remember those Turners?

 I love Turners! Still have a '12 Sultan that I've been considering tunring into a mullet bike because it'd probably kick some serious ass! I rode that bike way beyond it's means for years and couldn't imagine having more travel(ok, ok i really can), and a slacker HA on that sled.

 It's a new HD5. Just noticed that it was leaked on a store's website here in Canada. Pricing seems to be $6975 CAD for SLX build. Unfortunately no geo leaked.

 @mybaben: Looks like they took it down. Should have screen shotted but the above link gives you the brunt of the details. There's a HD5, it comes in Khaki and there's a SLX build. No photos or anything but we now know it exists and is coming online soon.

 I’ve heard from Fanatik it’s happening asper this story. ( geometry etc changes)

For me, it’s a weird fitting bike... ( I’m 5’11 and the bike feels cramped) Whereas, the ripmo felt great.

Time for a new fame I guess..

 Having owned several Ibises in the past, I can't agree more. They have always run on the smaller size compared to other companies. All of their newer bikes seem to be adopting the longer/lower slacker trend that's pretty much become the norm. super glad to see this though as I'd love to back on one of the AF models it's just that in the past, I'd have to ride an XL frame to get something that felt right in the top tube at the expense of having a seat tube that was almost too long. Cheers to them, hope all the new stuff works out; they're a fantastic bunch to deal with.

 I can’t imagine that a test mule would have new linkage, cable routing and a new paint scheme.

I would think that this is a HD4 version 2.0.

I like all of the visible updates, and am curious if the bike will be made in house.

 @mh731: Nobody pays for getting spotted. Anything paid on the site is labeled 'Sponsored'.

Half the time we get panicked phone calls asking to have a leak taken off the site. Not in this case though, as I'm sure Ibis knew what they were doing racing the bike at the EWS.

 Hope they added ISCG tabs to the BB . The lack of those tabs pushed me away from the RipmoAF . Killer looking bike but , not a fan of pinching the bash guard between the BB shell.

 There is an adapter for the iscg 05 mount. Its actually quite slick.

 Shouldn't let it. Iv'e been running a guide on my Ripmo all season with zero issues. The mounting plate is keyed so that it does not move.
