These days, it's almost easier to list the companies that aren't working on a 29" downhill bike than rattling off the brands that are, especially with the first round of the DH World Cup just around the corner. Last season there were plenty of cobbled together creations floating around the pits, but with an entire off-season for development the bikes we're seeing now look much more refined.

The 29er that Pivot's Rupert Chapman was spotted on at Crankworx Roturua is no exception, an aluminum-framed ride with a suspension layout that resembles a beefed up version of what's used on the Mach 5.5 trail bike.

Rather than being driven by a yoke that wraps around the frame, a la the Phoenix, the new bike's shock is attached to a short link that's situated in the middle of the seat tube.

Reynolds debuted their 27.5" carbon DH wheelset around this time last year, and now it appears that a 29" version could be on the way.

Last season a number of athletes were running Fox 40s outfitted with a RAD damper; it looks like the evolution of that testing could be getting ready for production, with adjustable high- and low-speed compression damping.

 So Gwin has said he prefers 29ers. He has said that they are probably faster for DH. He has said he is happy with YT because they actually listen to his input and feedback (unlike a certain other brand that starts with S and ends with litigation). So why isn't he on a proto 29er?

 After watching Gwin destroy MSA as Minnar struggled down it on his 29, and other steep tracks, I'm of the opinion Gwin is faster on smaller wheels. Maybe it's his bmx/Moto background or that he isn't tall. I hope he doesn't mess up a good thing like he did when he left Trek, and Hart was heading to the top of the sport until the big wheels derailed him last year.

 Gwin only wants to run 29'er because running it with no tyre effectively reduces it to 27.5.

 @jamesdunford: Bike wise, there’ll be something new for everyone to see in Croatia, and Aaron has been instrumental in this. I can’t say much now, as the official world release will be in Croatia. This makes the first race even more exciting!

 @Flowcheckers: Gwin would beat the rest of the field on 20" if he wanted to. It's almost an unfair advantage if he is on 29 as it suits his riding style. I certainly hope he is and destroys the field on it.

 @fartymarty: What about 29 wheels suits Gwins 'riding style"?

The fact that he isn't tall, that he grew up riding 20" wheels, or that he seems to stay lower on the bike than most riders? I know 29 wheels have the potential to go faster, but the rider has to fit into the bike to make it work.

I don't doubt a 29 would help Gwin more on some of the flatter races like Fort William, but not so sure it's gonna help him on the steep tracks.

 @Flowcheckers: that's just stupid. He adapted great to 26" from 20". Seems to have adapted great to 650b. You think he doesn't have the skills to adapt to 29"? It's a 1" diameter* change.

* My 650b DH tire diameter is 28" (Maxxis dhf 2.5 DH casing - Specialized Butcher 2.6 GRID was a bit more) and my 29er trail tire diameter is 29" (Specialized Butcher 2.3 GRID casing).

 @Flowcheckers: He has a straight line "smash and grab" approach that suits 29.

 @Flowcheckers: Gwin has said that he thinks 29ers feel more "moto" and allows him to ride higher over the rough, yet even more "in" the bike. As its been said before, hes a point and plow style rider, but he is very precise about picking where he points, and usually has the best, most planned out lines of the top riders.

 The pro level Capra 29 has 170mm rear travel (which is more than Gwin ever uses...so stiff Smile ) and will take a dual crown - he might be good already

 Can't wait to see all the good deals on used 27.5 DH rigs on buy/sell. Bring on the big wheels I say.

 The only place I see 26” wheels anymore is in the PB comment section.

 I think 27.5 will totally stick around though. 29ers may have an advantage in rolling resistance but there's still a demographic out there for smaller wheeled machines. Not every rider is a racer so I don't see the smaller wheels disappearing. In other words - I don't see our rampage riders, bike park senders, or certain riders who prefer a slightly more agile ride adopting the larger wheel anytime soon. I believe it will be a matter of preference in the coming years. No hate, just input.

 One ride on my 29er and I agree. Way faster and more confidence. I thought before it wouldn’t make much difference but it was night and day. Long live 29ers

 @V8Interceptor: I think he is referring to world cup racing. Riders are constantly complaining about tracks not being technical enough. Then they ride 29" wheels that smooth aout the trail even more.

 It's the doubt that kills people. "Could I be having more fun than this?" The answer hinges on whether you are being honest with yourself. Marketing wants you to think you'll feel happier if you buy something. Good sense should help you filter out what is objectively irrelevant to you.

 I have to say, aesthetically I like that thing a good bit more than the 27.5" Phoenix. There's something about the 27.5" version that just looks wrong to me and I can't really place my finger on it.

 It's a solid looking DH bike. Al. Frame large bearing pivots. The rear suspension is a four link like VPP. But it's a Weagle design I believe. On fast tracks this would be fun. I still don't think 29 inch wheels are an advantage on tight twisty rough tracks. Future DH races will be intriguing to watch to see who is getting podium finishes on wagon wheels

 Interesting thing about the Banshee article is that they clearly state that the 29” DH bike is purely aimed at the 6ft + rider as this is only where they feel the 29” wheels are an advantage in DH. As such it is only being produced in XL frame size. There are a lot of people here claiming that 27.5 is history rather than riders now have more choice as to which size suits not only there riding style but body type. Bike manufacturers seem convinced that there are applications for all 3 wheel sizes and I personally agree. In our family my 9 year olds on a 24” bike, my 12 year old is on a 26” bike, my wife is on a 26” bike and I have a 27.5” trail bike and 26” DH bike! If I was to upgrade the DH bike right now it would be to 27.5” based purely on the types of terrain and riding I do. If I was seriously into racing I would be wanting to try both 27.5” & 29” before deciding on what worked best for me within budget!!
