Brandon Semenuk: Simplicity - Video

Brandon Semenuk - Simplicity

There’s a special greatness in simplicity. And greatness is sometimes best measured in what you don’t see. When there’s something left for your imagination. When you can’t taste every ingredient. When you don’t see the hours of thought, and practice, and trial, and error. When you can do more, but less is more powerful. When you express yourself purely, simply. There’s greatness in simplicity, but it isn’t simple.

More style in one trick than Nicholi Rogatkin can even dream of having in an entire run.

More style in straight jump than Nicholi Rogatkin can even dream of having in an entire life*
Now correct Wink

What are you Semenuk bender boy, you could not tie Nicholi Rogatkin shoe lace, there both top riders and that's a FACT
  • + 39
you guys obviously didnt see the boooooooooooosted tuck no hander nicholi did in his celebration run at rotorua this year.

 that's not the point.

Why's everyone love to hate on Rogatkin? Semenuk has more style than 90% of the riders out there why not criticize some of them? I personally love Rogatkins no chill switch attitude, he's constantly pushing the limits. It's not like he's making big budget segments either, of course his live contest runs are gonna be less smooth than a ideo like this.
  • + 114
@nfstreet4life: It's proof that he is on the top drawer.
It is so stupid to write down comments that insult riders so easily....
After all Rogatkin and every Rogatkin is just a kid that is trying to be the best.
Isn't it what we are all dreaming off?
The only difference is that he has almost succeeded.....
Shut the f..k up everybody, just admire what pleases your eyes and leave it there...
  • + 46
@nfstreet4life: the other 10% belongs to Martin Soderstrom

@owenkaufman Why compare and be so negative towards Nicholi? If you really need to compare, compare this video to your own riding and filmmaking. Don't drag Nicholi into this.
  • + 3
@nfstreet4life: I personally think Rogatkin always puts too many tricks in one jump. It's impressive yes. But it's just not smooth
  • + 19
@leopaul: That's just his style, if he can throw another tailwhip or spin in anywhere he's gonna do it. I understand some people prefer smooth looking tricks, but I don't see why they all have to criticize him because it's not the style of riding they prefer. Fact is he is killing it this year, winning or coming close to almost everything he touches.

@leopaul: Yep, that shit's never stylish.
  • + 47
 1. Style is subjective.
2. Nicolai is railing against simplicity and battling hard against physics. He therefore looks closer to the edge most of the time. That is a respectable quest in its own right. Then again, BS has also pulled some mind bending stuff...
3. NR is a shorter, stouter, stiffer (for want of another word) guy. His proportioning and muscle structure means he bends less and therefore looks less fluid. That's an accident of genetics. Maybe if he ate less meat or had less testosterone, he'd be floppier and more "pleasing" to the eye.
4. We can all be picky: in some situations (e.g., high speed) Brandon can look clunky and twitchy too, plus his knees seem too close together when in DH mode. But remember, my views are irrelevant and merely a Lilluputian's spear in the toe of the great man (since overshooting that rock in that outtake he is a god).
5. Both are amazing for disparate reasons.
6. Blablabla
  • + 3
@BenPea: Tricks vs style/flow has gone on for years. Cramming in as much as you can, rushing through moves, not even fully clicked/pulled in one air is never stylish. Then, watch Semenuk do a simple table the way he does, the end.
  • + 28
Than again, Nicholi has more sportsmanship than Semenuk can ever dream to have. It's unfortunate, but Semenuk seems such a bad loser lately. If he enters an event I'm no longer looking forward to what cool new trick he will do but rather await what kind of drama queen he will be when he messes up.
  • + 37
@Ferisko: That's true, Rogatkin has more smiles in one event than Semenuk in his whole career.
  • + 23
@Ferisko: I think Semenuk is fighting more demons. Perfectionists are only satisfied with perfection. If he cared less then he wouldn't be as good, nay, effing great at what he does.
  • + 15
No need to compare the two they do different things
  • + 2
@isolationismdivision: "Cramming in as much as you can, rushing through moves, not even fully clicked/pulled in one air is never stylish" It could be argued that this vid contains a couple of instances of this.

A simple table wins zero contests. But maybe BS is on his own tangent now, perhaps in a different variation of the sport. And that's cool. Comparison with a contest beast is futile. Enjoy what you enjoy.
  • - 2
@BenPea: Riding doesn't have to be all about winning cheesy, circus style contests, thankfully. "It could be argued that this vid contains a couple of instances of this." Ha, ok.
  • + 5
@isolationismdivision: Competitive riding is absolutely about winning contests. no one hates on dh riders for training so hard and working hard to win.
  • + 1
@nfstreet4life: We're not talking about racing. Of course competitors compete to win, mostly, but is that all riders ride for? No.
  • + 2
@isolationismdivision: Riders ride for different reasons, Rogatkin clearly likes to do tricks, he's constantly trying to do new and better tricks and that kind of riding progresses the sport.

  • + 5
Every debate is futile. Rogatkin is a pro athlete, but Semenuk is an artist. This is not the same level. They are so different. Nicholi always does his best, knows the level that he needs to hit. But sometimes i feel his run cramping or dashed, and if i dont know the visorless helmet, or the "twister", i dont recognize him. But this guy up here is different. You can feel how clean and pure all of his movements. He is one with the bike, like a smooth dancer. All gestures are conscious. The magic is in the details of his ride, and that is what i call style.
  • + 13
i don't understand the hate that Rogatkin is getting. Why even mention him in this thread. You can praise Semenuk without trashing somebody else. Rogatkin's a nice and humble dude. Stop the hate.
  • + 0
@nfstreet4life: of course that's his style. And it's impressive as ****
I just personally prefer Semenuks simple smooth riding

Just to throw a spanner in the works, I feel like Semenuk is a victim of his own success. He has pushed it to such an incredibly high level, that to me all his videos are the same. I only watched this one half way. I've seen it all before. Kind of like Danny Mac with a couple of videos, like Apecuen or whatever it was called. Absolutely amazing riding, absolutely at a level I could only dream of achieving, but just not original any more. Rogatkin is more exciting to watch from my perspective. Partly because I am left wondering how he landed half the stuff he pulls. With Semenuk it's just got to the point where you know he's going to land everything perfectly... because he's Brandon Semenuk. Perfection could be his middle name.
  • - 1
@jaame: I think its a bit pretentious and egotistic, make an awesome video, yeah, blak and white, ok, keep it simple and dialed, perfect. Just dont call it SIMPLICITY. It´s like, I´m the smoothest guy in the world and I know it kindda thing, let me tell the rest of the world. Call it white sheep... The video was cool and I like semeneuk a lot though. Also Rogatkin is about the only one thats get me stoked in slopstyle he pull out crazy stuff, dont know why anyone would bring him into this. Youve gotta be a real jerk.
  • + 1
@jaame: Yea you never know what Rogatkin is gonna try and throw down, like that frontflip tailwhip at Montpillier, damn! But I have to disagree about the videos, I always love when Semenuk or Danny drop a new edit.
  • + 1
@noisette: Yeah, that must have been it. If they'd have had a sheep dog, it could just have driven them in formation and I'd only have had to do the math. This unorganized mess was a bit hard to cope with.

@jaame: Personally I'm not too interested in failed or nearly failed attempt. I appreciate the effort someone puts into perfecting it. They aren't quite the same either though. I'm not quite into these more dark themed videos he put out lately, but I love his unreal segment and that raw 100 video. As for Danny Macaskil, it seems like he has different modes too. You can have the fun (still amazing) stuff like Wee Day Out but he also has The Ridge which has a very different feel. I'm honestly not necessarily looking for people performing on the edge of their abilities. In fact, I would have hated it if Danny would have ridden Cascadia on the edge of his abilities! Or well, of course I do appreciate if people push the sport but then if you barely make it, improve it, perfect it and I'd like to see those steps.
  • + 3
@jaame: Yah, Rogatkin sure makes me surprised all the time on how he lands his disastrous new tricks he unleashes every season... hes very different from semenuk. What's all about these so-called "style" after all. I dont want to Imagine every rider riding like Semenuk or even Rheeder all the time. Every rider has his own signature after all.
  • + 1
@jejemon: f*cking right. They are all awesome dudes. Totally killing it in their own way.

Also what you said @vinay about the style of videos. Awesome riding itself is not enough to keep me watching. Personality is equally important, or the perception of the rider having fun, or just entertainment value not necessarily bike related.
  • + 1
@jaame: Love watching him get loose on the big bike though...esp the near miss rock hoppin shit from a while ago. All that perfection and smoothness looks sik when getting loose. Aaaaand Rogatkin is the shit...the smoothness will come after he blasts every f*ckin thing that seems impossible. Def exciting to watch.
  • + 111
SRAM, how about building some SIMPLICITY into your products by not changing standards, axle sizes, etc on us all the time?
  • + 48
They simply did not have time to clip the tree, so the simplest solution was to have him simply hit it with his face and make it look amazing.
  • + 31
In the past few weeks with world cup we are all being bombarded with wheel sizes and prototype bike setups all these racers are running and whatnot.. Sure its exciting and interesting stuff but In the meantime Brandon Semenuk is doing unimaginable acts on a 26" Trek Session Park... (hasn't been in production since 2015) ...Makes me want to go ride!
  • + 26
@RRMonster: Maybe if the industry goes full 29"Dh they'll think about 26" park bikes again. Just a thought.
  • + 5
@jaha222: Antidote has one. If I buy a DH bike, it's gonna be this one for sure
  • + 6
@jaha222: I honestly think this would be the best course of action. Companies could have a 29" DH race sled And a 26" DH "park" or "freeride" bike, that suits the average punter and those who just want to shred the gnar in style without pushing to the limits of the sound barrier

If Semenuk rode a 29er in this video which I'm sure he could, some idiots would go so butthurt, the sphincters in their arses would get permanently contracted and they would have to sht with their mouths. Oh wait, they already do... what I'm trying to say is: how the fk can you think of wheel size when you watch this?! I wouldn't give a fk if he rode a E-fatbike as long as he doing this unbelievably amazing thing he does

I agree flailing about casing everything like Rogatkin has done in the past is not stylish but he is tidying up his act I think. Not that he cares what i think.
