The winner for this round is PapaStone and they had this to say about winning a brand new Stages Power Meter:

bigquotesIt's awesome to win this contest. I was guessing the power figures would be a little lower due to the high altitude of the race. I'm seeing more and more Stages power meters on the trails and roads due to their ease of install and minimal weight penalty. - PapaStone

Stages Cycling makes power meters for all types of riders. Power meters are a tool that help cyclists get the most from their training. You may be surprised, but many of the riders you follow through Pinkbike’s race coverage use Stages Power to maximize their performance. At World Cup finals in Vallnord, Andorra, Stages Cycing collected rider power meter data, this time, looking at the riders' maximum 5-minute power. With regards to cross-country racing a rider's 5 min max power is a parallel indicator to his or her VO2max, which in turn is an excellent metric for assessing a cross-country racer's performance capacity.

**Stages Cycling will give away one Stages Power meter, up to US$649.99 value. Stages Power meter for Shimano XTR M9020 pictured.)

Thanks to Stages Cycling.

I was guessing the power figures too.

Way lower numbers than I was expecting for a 5 min max power. Pro road riders are north of 450 watts for 20 minutes! What am I missing here? Are MTB power readings lower than road readings? Is this just one leg so we need to double it? Is this average, not 5 min max?

@kelownamike - my guess is that you can't compare road biking to mtbing at all. These guys were in an xc race that my guess would be about 1hr 30mins long. Road biking you are on the pedals 'all the time' cranking out speed where the road is always consistent. With mountain biking and trail riding, you are always on and off, pedaling, pumping (not pedaling), pedal stroke here pedal stroke there, descending, etc it's so inconsistent that to get a 5min straight output, its never going to be very high with all the variables in there. My overall ride power output is very low compared to any road bike I do. Anyway, just my 2 cents!

Hard to get high numbers when the best five minutes includes a minute of descending.

High altitude racing always starves the lungs of oxygen and leaves racers gasping for air. That's the reason I didn't go for the higher wattage figures. I still feel extremely lucky to have won and I look forward to training with power outside using the Stages Power Meter. Thanks Stages Cycling!

Any chance we could get some units on these readings? I assume watts?

A number without units means nothing!
