May 16, 2019
by Ed Spratt
The first three laps of the race seemed promising for another challenge to Schurters supremacy but Nino Schurter would take off in lap 4 reinstating his status.

With the first round of the 2019 XC World Cup finally here is the official start list for this weekends race.

If you're playing along with XC Fantasy, then time is running out before the first round gets underway. Make sure to check that all of your chosen riders will be racing today, so you don't miss out on crucial points.

 Riders to note: Jenny Rissveds making her return to world cup racing; Alan Hatherly, U23 world champ, making the move up to elite; Isla Short doing the same.

 @Bergsmannen: That is awesome!

 @UPBike: Yes it is. Se what she can do in the WC race, I guess here starting position wont be the best.

 @Bergsmannen: short track should help that to an extent though, right?

 @SangamonTaylor: Not really sure what the rules are in the short track race. My guess is that she has to start quite long back i both races.

 @Bergsmannen: If it is the same as 2018 the top 16 finishers in the short track make up the front two rows in the WC race.

 I'm so excited that we have another promising rider making his way up the rankings after Burry was taken so early

 Why isn't Jenny Rissveds included in the fantasy teams?

 @edspratt what is the reason for not including all starting athletes in the fantasy league?

 The women's race should be fantastic! Lots of strong women to battle it out. This weekend may go to Annika if it's really a gravel race as Anton insinuated. Nevertheless, I love seeing fit athletes battling it out while redlining their heartrate for 90 minutes.

 And let's not forget that VDP has just had a FULL season : 30 CX races + spring road classics + he's just finished a multiple days 80 km cross country race.
Schurter only bet on XCO, so he's very fresh compared to the Dutch boy

 Why don't the numbers start at 1? God the UCI are such weirdos.

 I think they will after this first race....after World Cup points are dished out, then they can seed 1 - 25

(I'm totally making this up, I really don't know).

 @RR1: Makes sense to me!

 Maja Wloszczowska pulled out of Albstadt and Nove Mesto races, due to what seems like ongoing issues with recurring illness that she seemingly hasn't been able to shake since late winter. Too bad!

 I think this will be a difficult race to call the results, but that will make it more fun too watch, so all good!

 What about Kulhavy? I know he is on his own team this year but thought he was doing the World Cups as well.
  • + 1
 He's in there, #70

 Krush 'em Kate !!

 Lots of top riders not on the fantasy league lists

 no van der Poo?
  • + 3
 He's on there at number 33.

Also looked insane on the road earlier this year (I think he went 2/4 in his first ever pro road races).
Which 1) means he's an incredible athlete, and 2) points to how crazy fast Nino is since he seemed to have the slightly bigger engine all of last season.

 @doggparadox: Van Der Poel has had in 3 month the road career that Schurter will never have. Plus, he's a master at CX.
As good as Schurter can be, he will never be a legend, just a very good MTBker. And he does not have that craziness that VDP have.
VDP on the other hand, if he continues, will truly be a legend in cycling. Period.
