@ratedgg13: How is Paul doing? I have not seen an update for a while
  • + 32
@birdman2447: I believe he just ran the Red Bull Wings for Life relay, Cam Zink posted something about it on Instagram, think he ran a mile?

Would definitely pick up a #LongliveChainsaw sticker, and or shirt if the proceeds find their way to either his total bad ass Mom, or her foundation.

PLEASE PINKBIKE stop making me cry...awesome tribute
  • + 13
forever with us Steve, we´ll mis you.

this one stings really bad. damn.

INPUT NEEDED....Please and Thank You. I have a new, as yet unopened, trail section that is being renamed in Stevie's honour. We want to get the name right, of course....is it just "Chainsaw"...or "Chainsaw Massacre" ...and should there be a "The" in front of either? Or whatever is accurate. Thanks
  • + 4
@fmogan77: Hope you're donating the money to his fund? If so, I'll buy a few for sure!
  • + 5
 @Islandbear:

I am going too but i need to figure out pricing first
  • + 29
Sitting by myself staring at my phone crying after that. I live in Nanaimo. Nothing but nothing was cooler than being from the same town as Stevie. Only met him briefly once and saw him riding his road bike with a cast on his leg another time. What a special man. One of the best in the world, and on his way to being THE best....again. This is one of those times when words....just dont....cut it......
  • + 4
@fmogan77: Sounds good, but a %100 of the earnings should go to his fund. Maybe contact the organizer of the last fund and work something out. Just my two cents.... Any thoughts on the design? Maybe you should contact his close friends and collaborate on something together. I'd really like to support something like that.
  • + 12
@loopie: I vote Chainsaw Massacre! Sounds epic and a great tribute to a great rider.

 @Islandbear:

 @fmogan77: Gotcha, good try though

@Islandbear: yea i would if i could i might just order i t shirt and some stickers for myself
  • + 4
@loopie: good call, we have new section of Dh track we just named chainsaw.
  • + 2
 @loopie: Chainsaw Massacre for sure
  • + 26
@loopie: I think it should be the entire nick name so that there is NEVER any misunderstanding as to whom the trail is named after. The Canadian Chainsaw Massacre.
  • + 14
I'm selling my Transition TR250 for few months now and plan was to buy a downhill bike. I didn't know which but now I know, I'll buy Devinci Wilson in honor of Steve.
  • + 38
I did one ride for him yesterday, all dressed in black i pushed my bike up the hill, with no music that i usually ride with (no hate please) but in deafing silence I tried to ride the trail down twice as hard as I could and had as much fun as I could ...for Stevie...RIP
  • + 6
@fmogan77: why not both. Will do some as well over here in germany... definitely inspired me to do some skills coaching next year... couldnt help to breake in tears today as well, had to think of so many riders that died last year and this year...

Its also just 108 days ago that mc gaza died... I think every day about him... my idols are dying out, and I want to race with them... its a shame Frown
  • + 18
@guigui333: Thanks for posting this. This is surely one of the greatest DH WC runs of all time. With Smith still searching for his second ever WC win, and sitting second in the overall behind Gee, it appeared that the weather and a fortuitous early start time was going to further increase Gee's lead.

I remember watching this live and feeling so bad for all the riders caught in the rain - but mostly Stevie. At the same time I knew if anyone could bring it home on the wet, it would be him and his Van Isle roots. His performance on home soil, in less than ideal conditions, to take the win, was the catalyst for his overall win and the best performance I have ever seen.

What a champion.
  • + 1
@fmogan77: hope 750 is just a start. You have my word that I will order at least 5 myself.
  • + 3
@jmascia: I agree! There's only one man who rocked that moustache and could be called "The Canadian Chainsaw Massacre"
  • + 15
@fmogan77: Hey man, top idea, but before you do so, make the effort to contact the people closest to Steve.
I made some McGazza designs for stickers, shirts etc and the family wasn't too stoked that I didn't contact them first – totally fair enough too. It would have looked to them like I was some kind of shady guy trying to make money off it, even though funds were to be sent directly to the Kelly McGarry Memorial Trust.

Contact the family and work with them on this one! Smile
  • + 1
@fmogan77: I'll have some of them stickers when you've finished the design Smile
  • + 1
@fmogan77 I will too, we have to support Stevie and his family however we can
  • + 1
 @loopie: Thy chainsaw massacre
  • + 2
@fmogan77: if money is going to the "Stevie Smith legacy fund" I will 100% no doubt by these
  • + 1
 "Chainsaw"

and yes I will support
  • + 1
 @fmogan77:
I would buy one for sure!!!!!!
  • + 1
@mayha49: Feel ya my friend, neither could I. We've lost some great people in the recent past and it needs to stop.
  • + 1
@loopie: I don't have your answer but wanted to tell you that is a noble tribute to another now legend!!
  • + 1
@fmogan77: how can we get some?
  • + 3
 1. Crying by 0.7 second of the video. 2. LOVE the bike toss! 3. I NEED SOME DAM STICKERS!!! Will miss you Stevie.

 RIP
  • + 6
@bube: As much as it pains me to say this, but please don't do that in honor of Steve. Devinci makes killer rides, no doubt about that, but if you really want to honor him, go out and support your local trails, teach a kid something new, volunteer your time and make your community a better place. Buy a bike because its what you want, not because it somehow carries the legacy of this incredible human being, because he was so much more than just a bike.
  • + 1
@fmogan77: is the money being donated to Stevie's fund? If so I'll buy some

@bube: that was one of the factors in me getting my Wilson a couple of years ago. Did a bunch of research and before and the bike felt the best to me after riding a few. Was a spur of the moment decision...best damn bike I've ridden (and I'm not the best at riding). Super stable and very confidence inspiring. So was Stevie. Watched him shred through the years and his progress, truly inspiring.

I've lost a few friends along the way and you never get over it. You remember them and they live on because the time and experience/knowledge you gained from them will live on. I'm in a profession where I see death almost on a daily basis. You fight to save their lives but it doesn't always work out. Death does not affect me in ways that it affects others. I'm a bit jaded after all these years. If there is anything I've learnt, it's to not mourn them or be sad that they are gone but be happy and appreciative that you got to know the person and learn a few things about them.

I've been wanting to post something since I refreshed Pinkbike on Tuesday and saw the press release. I couldn't think for a solid minute and just stared at the screen. It's strange, because I never met Steve, nor did I have any secondhand stories from friends or acquaintances or had happened to run into him; yet, the news felt the same as hearing of the death of an athlete much closer to my circles. In short, Steve's genuine personality really stood out to me, from the first interview I read on him in Bike, when he was riding Cove, to the content he appears in on Pinkbike from this year.

I remember being so stoked on racing (probably 14 at the time), and seeing the Seasons segment and the feature in Bike, and thinking, "He's not much older than me, and he's making it, working hard and having his mom shuttle him." No development camps at 10 years old, trips to Europe, trust fund, etc - all nice privileges that can be great, but I instantly respected him for his humble roots. He wanted to ride his bike, "like those guys... riding their bikes full time, for their job." For some reason, I respected that driven but down to earth attitude so much.

Steve's hard working and humble yet lighthearted and massively stoked personality embodies the notion I have always held of "The Best Mountain Biker". He is THE example to point to for young riders everywhere, or really all riders of any age. He seemed like the kinda guy who you wanted representing your brand, setting an example for the youngsters, and joining you for a ride and a beer. From reading all the comments, it seems like I share the feelings of everyone. I can only hope that his passing makes everyone he inspired think about what Steve represented in his short but full life. Shred in peace, buddy.
  • + 11
I thought and reacted the same way. I was fortunate to make it to MSA while he was there, not his winning run, but last year. I saw him on the track and in the tents. I didn't approach him as I wanted him to remain focused.
When I first saw the news I had an immediate and abrupt reaction as well. Almost like I knew him. Like he was one of my buddies. I think he transcended Canadian DH racing. We all knew Stevie.... This news hit harder..... There is a reaction comment on the Flow MTB web page where someone was relating how they used to ride with him. He hit a line that seemed impossible and did so perfectly. When asked about it he apparently said no falls no balls. #longlivechainsaw
  • + 7
his run at Pietermaritzburg worlds always made me think he's one of the very best riders in the world. Once he had written off his race run he was tricking a bunch of the jumps and just riding SO smooth. then that segment where he's riding dirt jumps with Semenuk and 3'd one and stretched out no-handers and other tricks... he was undoubtedly one of the very best riders to ever swing a leg over a bike, and judging by all the outpouring of support from those who knew him personally, also one of the nicest.
  • + 120
"...worst case scenario i'm still happy, and, best case scenario i'm damn pumped"
words to live by. what a legend.
  • + 83
Long live the memory of the greatest Canadian downhill racer. He was one of the greatest ambassadors for the sport.
  • + 68
Back in 2013 in my U17 days in Whistler at Crankworx, it was practice for the Canadian Open DH. It was pouring rain, and I didn't know the race course very well at all. I couldn't get my lines dialed, kept crashing, and was just overall loosing my confidence. I was loosing my motivation to race on sunday. I had a pretty gnarly crash, and ended up nutting myself. We all know how that feels... So I stopped on the side of the track to take a breather. Next thing I know, Stevie stops beside me and says "hey man, you all good?" so I reply "yeah... just taking a breather" Stevie notices me holding my package and says laughing "ah, did you hit your penis?" so I say laughing back "yeah hahah, just can't put it together today" Steve looks at me and says "Don't give up on yourself. Just stay focused, and believe in yourself. You got this!" When those words left his mouth, I got a huge boost in confidence. I just looked at him and smiled. Steve then says "and never forget to have fun, at the end of the day, thats what its all about."

From that moment on, I have never forgotten what Stevie said to me. Racing has gotten that much easier for me. Thank you for being such an inspiration to myself, as well as many of us mountain bikers. Thank you for making me proud to be Canadian. Ride in peace Stevie, you will never be forgotten #LongLiveChainsaw
  • + 8
Hitting the emotions on that story, like wow. #LongLiveChainsaw Great dude
  • + 62
I am a bit Non-Canadian. Not into hockey, lacrosse or soccer. I am into snow and bikes, which I suppose is very Canadian for many of us. I have never cried for the passing of a celebrity, but only direct friends or associates that have died. I shed several tears for Steve as he was kind of a hero of overcoming adversity and it was largely due to his Mom. That Tracker's shocks were gone thousands of kilometres ago and she shuttled the shit out of it until they were all parched, the driver, the rider and the shocks. That Mother and Son crew were a force, they stood for perserverance and stubborness. Steve won a World Cup Title after an unfathomable amount of effort and we all hoped that he would continue on a path of success.

People die everyday and I see the results of it everyday in my work. The limit of attainability will never be reached, but everyone needs to recognise that there is always a limit. I am crushed . Steve was by far my favourite Athlete in the world, the only one that got me on the edge of the seat "Go Stevie", that my Girlfriend became just as enthusiastic about, and I thought was about to have a breakout year given more than 23 minutes of racetime over the entire year. I am so crushed by this and I wish his Family whatever empty words that I can convey to them, as well as all the people that were rooting for him over the years.

Go Stevie!
From North Vancouver.

I swear.... someone's chopping up onions near me. :-(

We're all gonna miss ya Stevie! Thanks for the memories. #LongLiveChainsaw

  • + 19
I have no idea why his death is hitting me so hard. I guess it's because I've been obsessed with mountain biking for the last few years and Stevie has been THE Canadian rider in that time. My only brush with him was riding behind him and Troy Brosnan on a warmup lap on Crank It Up in Whistler. I never thought I'd get to ride on the same trail as him, but there he was - drifting through every berm. As I said in the last thread about his death, I really hope his accomplishments in life inspire the next generation of young riders.
  • + 14
It feels so good that I could see that contagious smile. Thanks for making me smile Stevie. I looked at my red Fox gloves and thought about you. Sucks you ain't here anymore, you were a Fkng awesome dude. Cheers! It's all gonna be good, it's what we make of it.

Just a suggestion for @pinkbike when you do the good month/bad month article.

Good month: we get to remember Steve as a person and his accomplishments.
Bad month: we lose him.

God dammit. The comments, the tribute, everything should all be heartwarming. It's not. All I can think about is his mom. Fuck. Hug the people you care about folks, because you just never know.
  • + 8
I met him at Val de Sole last year with my 7 year old son Alfie, Stevie had so much time for Alfie despite racing and was such a cool, nice, genuine bloke. He signed his BMX helmet which Alfie absolutely loves and 'smithy' (as he calls him) is his favourite rider. Myself and my wife broke the news to him today.... we are all absolutely gutted, it's so sad. RIP Smithy, you have touched us all.

Stevie, like you said in your video - "I'm just stoked to be a part of it." While you might not be here with us in the flesh any longer, we the spectators and global cycling community were endlessly "stoked to be a part of" watching you perform incredible and inspiring feats on two wheels. You were one of a kind and have left an indelible mark in all of our hearts and minds, and in the history books. We're going to miss you but you'll always be with all of us. Thanks for everything Stevie. #LongLiveChainsaw

I just heard these lyrics a lot differently now. I loved this song before - and now, along with Wintersleep's Orca - it will forever remind me of the kid from Cassidy.

His short life will continue to inspire people across the globe. Long live the Chainsaw.

Brilliant tribute to Stevie Smith nice one pinkbike. It still guts me know that such a talented young guy and all round top bloke has been taken at such a young age with so much to live for. It makes no sense to me, he deserved better than that. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

I really hope to see a screen full of Canadian flags at the next world cup event!

He did not deserve that not is family and friends ,not even the world ,cause the world gonna be a little worst day by day ,it's a real fuckup this world ,you could never be that happy ,it's like somebody saying ,no no you would not have that easy ,fuck fuck fuck. The world just lost a very true good human ,and that my friends it's a tear dropping.

Gutted when I read this, for someone so young and so much living to do! NO parent should bury their young, thoughts go out to his Mom, girlfriend and loved ones. This sucks.

Sorry, but does anyone know how it happened? I read the Nanaimo news and they mentioned something about coming around a corner and colliding with a friend or something (www.cheknews.ca/tributes-pour-honouring-nanaimo-star-steve-smith-174600)

It would be a nice tribute if at fort William they announce Steve smith in the start gate, keep it empty, and let the timer beeps start. Then any and everybody that brings their chainsaws can let them rip for a proper send off. I didnt know him whatsoever, but it has impacted and saddened me as if I did. Ride in peace Chainsaw!!!

Powerful vid, brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Stevie for inspiring my kids and I to not only be better riders, but better people.

My 2 cents on a sticker or shirt idea is the "CHNSW" like he had on the seat stay of the bike he won the 2013 DH Air on at Crankworx.

I went on ride with Stevie one Saturday morning a while ago. We had a long ride up I suppose and the whole way up we talked about bikes and blowing Wheelsets in races but I remember clearly at the top he said wouldn't it be cool if redbull sponsored to build a dh trail in nanaimo. Now whether they do that or not. I think I'm gunna make something happen for him anyways when I have time again. He was a true inspiration for me inside the media and as a friend.

I'v been alive for 46 years and I can't think of another year where we lost some many talented people. I've seen so many tributes this year i'm numb, and that should never happen.I I hope people take solace in the fact that he lived his life to the fullest and accomplished many of his goals before his time. The only good thing that could be said about this is now McGarrity has a friend with him.
  • + 6
 i mean KELLY MCGARRY.....lol, wtf?

I have watched Seasons many times and I am always taken aback by the speed that this man goes. No matter how many times I watch it I am still mesmerized by the sight of the undergrowth bending to his slip stream and the fluid motion that he had(s) on a bike. That part, in that film, was something that pushed me to go faster, hit the bigger hits and inspired me to try and have a modicum of the grace and style that exemplifies his riding. If you look closely, he can even corner in mid air. Long live Stevie and Long live Chainsaw.
  • + 4
DAMN... RIP CHAINSAW!! Ill be keeping him alive in memory watching and sharing his videos!

I know what its like to watch your idol grow up and follow his career. I was around the same age as norbraten and watched him as a grom around prince george jumping everything he could and pushing himself. From watching the ultimate freeride challenge segment and his cameo on drop in to walking by him in the hallway of junior high. I'll never forget the feeling of being close to someone you know is going to do big things with their life. When I moved to nanaimo to attend university Steve was mentioned everywhere and I got a chance to see him ride provost. It was the same feeling as seeing norbs do a suicide no hander at 15, they both loved what they did and committed themselves to everything within the community of bikes. Steve gives you goosebumps. Not everybody can do that but because he's a fellow Canadian it made watching races at anytime of the morning worth it. It's like Zakk wylde said "there's no such thing as struggling, you either love to do it or you don't. Its not a pain in the ass to practice, I enjoy practicing, I enjoy travelling. If you think it's a struggle then its going to be a struggle". Steve only showed us commitment, integrity and indenting love of what he did. It's ok to be emotional remembering him. We all have a hero that makes our day and Steve was for so many.

Thank you Steve for inspiring myself and many others. A true legend of the sport and the greatest Canadian downhiller there will ever be. Thank you rob parkin for the amazing video. And thanks to all those who have shown support. We all ride for stevie

Its even more sad having watched this and then also finding the old vid of him and his mom shuttling him up and down the local trails. Nothing could compare to losing a son like that. Glad he died doing what he loved though. RIP

My heart is still broken i will carry you in my heart forever , I'll see you on the other side my friend Forever proud of you Love ya man rest in piece CP

Tragic events like what happened to Steve always seem to happen to most incredible people that absolutely don't deserve the cards they're dealt. I didn't know Steve on a personal level but if there is one thing I can offer to those who did; it doesn't appear that he held back but instead pursued the life he dreamt of. That is admirable.

LIke many of the rest of you, I first came to know Stevie in Seasons; a segment about a boy, his bike and and a loving mom that enabled his passion to flourish. I met Stevie once, at Crankworx. It was during our brief interaction that Stevie proved he was every bit of the genuine dude depicted in every video and photo of him, also demonstrated by the tremendous amount of outpouring for his loss.

RIP Stevie. My heart is broken for those close to you, but especially your mother.
  • + 2
