Montgomery Talks About The Straitline Hydraulic Gyro:

Straitline Hydraulic Gyro
Mike Montgomery took a strong second, as well as best trick honors, with this prototype Straitline hydraulic gyro installed on the front of his Banshee. Expect to see a few other riders, including Cam McCaul, Brandon Semenuk and Casey Groves, rocking one of these at some of the upcoming events.

Pinkbike's take: No, this isn't the first go at a hydraulic gyro, but knowing Straitline, this version may just be the one that takes off. Word is that previous attempts in the past by other companies have always been scuttled by seals that weren't up to snuff, making for an unreliable setup that, even when working, took most of the firmness out of the lever. If Straitline can manufacture a production version that proves to be reliable, cost effective and not change the feel of the brake, we'll begin to finally see the hydraulic gyro on the front of a lot of slope and DJ bikes.

Check out the the Straitline website to see their current lineup.

If Straitline could produce a reliable and functional hydraulic gyro, would you be interested? Lets hear what you think - put those thoughts down below!

hopefully they make some for people to buy and not "just for the pros" bullshit
  • 5 0
And yet they both seem extremely enthusiastic about switching to something else. Hmmmmm...
  • 7 2
because trickstuff is just a small manufacturer and cant pay the same salary as straitline
  • 4 1
dingdingdingding! Bingo! Not that those dudes don't deserve to get paid! But that's real talk.

i think they do sell it on the internet. i saw someone riding with one a couple weeks ago and then i looked it up on the web. its like 250 bucks

Straitline isn't paying Semenuk or McCaul either. As kylepaulson mentioned above and as was mentioned in the video if you listened to it, McCaul helped out with the design of this one. Not for money, but because he wanted something that worked. And you may have noticed that McCaul and Semenuk tried them a few years ago but they actually haven't been running them at all. This one works well enough that they want to run it...

im not sure about semenuk but mccaul is running the trixer non stop for several years now. i doubt he would ride it for such a long time if it didn't work well.
im absolutly cool with them riding the straitline gyro. but i dont like that straitline is acting like they reinvented the wheel. in fact they improved (did they? nobody knows yet) a system thats been there for almost a decade

Okay I take back the comment that they haven't been using them at all, they haven't been using them most of the times I've shot with them which has been fairly regularly over the last few years. As you showed in the photos above they used them on their slopestyle bikes last year, but I looked back through several years of photos and it seems they used them intermittently at best, and generally only on their slopestyle bikes, not on their hardtails. At least in all the photos that I have.

Straitline isn't claiming anything, in fact there is no comment from Straitline in the post at all. Mike Levy says "this isn't the first go at a hydraulic gyro" and if you listen to the audio you will notice that Mike Montgomery straight up says that they took a design that they felt didn't work as well as it should and improved it. And he mentions that Cam was involved with the design as well, working from the one that he's had to improve it. And they did improve it, we know that because Semenuk tried this one and will be putting one on his bike immediately. He isn't using the other one, and I would have to guess that's only because he isn't happy with it. If the trixer actually worked as well as you claim these riders wouldn't be putting so much effort into improving it.

Nowhere in the post was the Trixer mentioned by name by any of these guys, they were quite professional in not naming what they felt didn't work. This wasn't a review of the Straitline product, and it wasn't a comparison of different products. It was simply a post based on the new prototype that Mike Montgomery and Cam McCaul helped to design after I spoke to Mike about it at the Jump Ship event.

Relax everyone, you are ruining the readers experience by bantering. We responded to Mike and Cams request for help and we made a product that they are happy with. That's it that's all!

To me gyros are kinda a waste unless ur sponsored becuase it requires some dough $$$$ to buy one. I wouldnt mind just buying a long steel braided cable. haahah i really would like to see people drilling in their frames to buy one of these too Razz

by far the best feeling gyro ive felt for sure, dosnt feel like a spongy peice of ass

Really sick gyro! I had the opportunity to visit the straitline factory in Sydney today and got to take a peak at what they have been doing, the gyro definitely seems a step up from what other companies have been producing, but $6000 dollar proto price tag holy cow haha.

Trickstuff has already the second version of the Trixer going and tested by pro riders I could already see the new one in Winterberg and the brake still felt firm. It is lower as well and they changed the seals from the Trixer MK I to the Trixer MK II it was more than just a facelift. As they told me. So happy rides and spins with that. I am running a Trickstuff Trixer MK II by my self and haven't had any trouble since month.

 Straitline will destroy trixsters verson..
  • 4 1
why nobody know the trixer by trickstuff? works almost like the gyro and everybody can buy it
  • 1 0
the trtixer is known but it is too expensive... i also know about an atomlab one that is "cheaper", but its expensive any way and i heard about some problems with it
  • 1 0
apparently it makes the brake feel spongey... i couldnt comment though because ive never tried one
  • 2 1
The Trixer and the Atomlab one both had seal issues that made the brakes feel really spongy and the riders weren't happy with them, that's why they designed this one...
  • 2 0
solid looking gyro. And knowing straitline with the burly parts made by them so far, This may be the one product that could be good

Awesome, I hope it works. I want one. Would make doing a tail-whip so much easier and worry free. Stoked, can't wait.

Yeah, you havin tangled cables when you try to tail-whip?...
  • 2 0
 Hahaha, you said it!
  • 2 0
definately would buy one if it worked flawlessly
  • 2 1
Headset integration won't work. Most DJ bikes use an integrated set aka NO CUPS.
  • 3 0
this system will work with an integrated set up, it has nothing to do with the headset, sits on top ...
  • 2 0
I like how they just screwed it into the headtube.
  • 2 0
The gyro is amazing. It feels like your regular brakes, just better. Ken
  • 1 0
How low could they make it? If they could make it low enough than for sure it would be sick!
  • 1 1
It is a pity that the rotor of Trickstuff isn't mentioned in the article...
  • 1 0
It's not mentioned by name because the article is not about it, the article is about the new Straitline one that is designed to fix a few of the problems that the other ones have... And actually it is mentioned
[quoten]previous attempts in the past by other companies have always been scuttled by seals that weren't up to snuff, making for an unreliable setup that, even when working, took most of the firmness out of the lever.[/quoten]

hey this means i cud practice barspins on a dh bike
  • 1 0
how would you run this if you have no tabs on your frame??
  • 3 2
what if your frame does not have the gyro tab holes?
  • 63 0
 go buy a drill
  • 7 1
I'm sure the one that people have been testing is a prototype unit. Hopefully in the future, Straitline will design the gyro to work without tabs.
  • 5 0
You'll be able to drill holes in your headtube and thread them to allow it. As long as it's below your headset cups and your bolts aren't too long, it shouldn't be a problem in my eyes buddy.
  • 4 1
yes exactly, tabs aren't necessary as you can see on mike's proto above. Like gazmataz said, one or two small threaded holes should be an easy retrofit especially if you can use the guide tabs as a drilling guide.
  • 13 0
Hey, here's an idea! Why don't you make the upper headset cups with the lower hose guides? This negates voiding frame warranties, and Straitline can move onto making awesome headsets! Benefits of this is obvious: -lower stack height -stronger and lighter setup than the ghetto modifications -straitline makes profits -riders are happy -Everybody wins!
  • 1 0
was about to say.... theoreticaly right! but whats with frame warranties? lol i wouldnt risk that Razz
  • 3 0
 *are
Man, I should screw off architecture and go into engineering new/better components for bikes.. I would truly enjoy life like that.
  • 1 0
or they could partner with a headset manufacturer like chris king or cane creek
  • 7 0
Can't wait to see somefool drill holes in his headtube with his fork still installed and drill (even screw) right into the steerer tube. haha, anyway looks/sounds great!
  • 5 0
how about a small plate that you seat under the headset before it's pressed in?
  • 1 0
That wouldn't work with an integrated or semi-integrated headset.
  • 1 1
Would not work at all because the threadless headset fits perfectly with the frame... There would be no space to even try to wedge it in.
  • 1 0
Well actually you could install a plate beneath a standard threadless headset. That's how a regular gyro works when a frame doesn't have gyro tabs.
  • 1 0
right... but there must be an other option to keep it on its place without making holes...
  • 6 0
I'm sure warranty departments worldwide will just be THRILLED with kids drilling holes in the headtubes of their jump bikes.
  • 3 0
Your right, foolish idea. Lets leave the warranty claims back in the brake makers lap when people rip and ruin cables. Progression is so silly. I threw away all of my toilet paper. My neighbour has an outdoor patio with at least 200 square feet of fake golf turf so I should be good for at least 3 months. Just bugging, and yes we will have to have a guidline and this would come inside the gyro packaging to avoid home installs.
