Superenduro 2017 Round 4 - Calestano: Day 2

Sep 9, 2017
by Ben Winder

Day two of practice today in Calestano for the fourth round of the Superenduro (Italian Enduro Series) saw the sun stay out for most of the day and the trails dry out. As night fell the heavens opened, thunder and lightning ensued, and the trails are going to tell a very different tale tomorrow—slippery, difficult, and slower.

I’ve been told numerous times today that stage four is the best of the year and after riding it I concur. All the trails have an amazing mix of terrain, technical sections, and faster flowy sections. The longest stage is 4.5km long.

Riders are all nervous about the weather but know there’s a race to win tomorrow. Marco Millivinti has a few points to make up and told me he has mud spikes on and is excited for tomorrow. Other riders might aim to play it safe tomorrow and try to make up points in the final round of the series. In the women's race, series leader Alia Marcellini is out with injury, the next racer in the ranking who’s competing is Laura Rossin, who will be looking to take this opportunity to make up some points. Noga Korem is here this weekend, who took third position at the EWS in Madeira.

The Italians really know how to run an Enduro race. I rode the La Thuile tracks the week after the race and rode the trails used in the Lombardia Cup Enduro and was blown away by the level of the technical and physical challenge compared to the UK Enduro races.
