Superhuman: Finals Photo Epic - Mont-Sainte-Anne DH World Cup 2017

How to begin describing this race? That's a tough one. Tougher still when you're not allowed to use profanities; just try telling someone about it without swearing. Still, we'd better try... You could say it was a race where the impossible suddenly became possible. A race where expectations were shattered and the rules rewritten; it's brilliance difficult to overstate. This was the best downhill mountain bike race of all time and there'll be few to deny it.

In a disastrous turn of events, all too reminiscent of round one in Lourdes, just before the top 20 dropped in the heavens opened for a deluge that would last the rest of the day. In 15 minutes the track was in ruin, a river for the most part and visibility became the biggest concern for riders on course. Most were off the pace by a massive 10 or 20 seconds and all seemed lost until a certain Aussie refused to lie down and went ballistic almost ousting teammate, Dean Lucas, who rode in the near-dry, from the hot seat.

This was surely the turning point of the race as team managers radioed up to the start hut with the news Jack Moir had almost turned things around; all was not lost and for the cream of the crop there was a title at stake. Although many tried, it was the likes of Brosnan, Bruni and not least, Hart, who pulled something truly special out of the bag, surfing the puddles and skimming the ruts, while somehow finding grip again on a course more fit for white water rafting than any two wheeled machine. They were truly miracle runs. In the end, though, it was all just build up to a positively superhuman performance by one man. Well, we think he's a man, but he's been called a wizard before and after today we need answers. Just how does Aaron Gwin do it?

Lets also give a shout to the camera crews who dealt with these terrible conditions (again) to bring us this awesome footage. Without them, Gwins impossible run would have been nothing but a myth!

I think they could have wiped or protected the lenses a lot better plus we lost the camera in the best bit of the rock garden right before Hart's run and they cut away from the runout off of Steve Smith's rock a couple of times in the end.

By far the most exciting climax of a race in years, I was screeming at the screen!!
Mind-boggling pace of the top runners in these conditions and GWINNER took it straight to an even more insane level, these linesl!! Also the interview after the race, I was just grinning because of him grinning all over the place. :-)
  • + 19
Me too, I was so devastated when hart didn't quite make it, then lost my nana when gwin green, so awesome!!

Win or lose, we've seen that grinning is an essential part of Gwinning. Always hungry, always humble. Love this guy.

What a race. I was there all week-end long, the track is rougher than ever. Hart was INCREDIBLE in every single run he did in practice (as always...). I tought Bruni was off the pace on friday but I heard he crashed in a practice run that probably slowed him down just to pin it more after. In the end, I was watching Gwin at the finish line on the screen and couldn't believe it. Photos just doesn't do justice to the weather we had in the race, we had a hard time to just walk around the course, I would have never run this track under those conditions. Finally, I just saw two of those legendary runs : Hart and Gwin. Again...
  • + 25
Great pictures! Still can't get over Gwin's run. I thought Hart already pulled a miracle.
  • + 18
HUGE prop to all the riders who came down in the pouring rain ! Gwin did win but, if we could get the average speed of Hart, Bruni and others, we would not be able to visually notice a difference.
And man....Did you see the speed they went ??? 60km/h in the pouring rain ! My word...
Thank you to the reporters who keep working in awful conditions !
Nice to see the the huge crowd despite the rain as well.

  • + 9
 Amazing right?!

The riders in 1st and 2nd for the overall each have a DSQ for crossing the tape in the wrong spot after leaving the track in the worst, torrential conditions - Greg had an eerily similar result at MSA to what Gwin had in Lourdes.

And in the end they are so close. Two of the best of all time...Greg with the most wins ever and Gwin hot on his heels each adding 2 more to their tally this season. Legends growing for sure!

I personally would love to see one take the overall and one take champs...now which to root for where?

i would love to see greg win the overall(just to add a history that a 29er won overall in a UCI DH circuit).

world champs to gwin(i may be wrong but i havent seen the american flag waved in world champs since i got into the sport about 10yrs ago).
but that just wont make it more climatic, they have been dominant and we know they are at greatness level. i would love to see a new faces win in the remaining events. but then agian..i see greg and aaron standing on top of a podium in any of those events.

sam hill should race at world champs to add fear and awesomeness as a season ender.

Took my wife and 6 month old son to watch their first World Cup DH and even with the rain all had an absolute blast! That course is so rowdy it is unbelievable, what Gwin did in those conditions is beyond what mortal riders like us could ever even dream of!  I am with you on Greg. I am a big fan of the Syndicate - but Moir, Brosnan, Hart, Loic and Gwin just wanted it more. Greg's face at the end said it all. Full race run to full race run, Gwin will be your WC champ at the end.

Now I'm not usually one to comment on PB to all the nonsense banter. I'm someone who could never even come close to riding like WC guys in the pissing rain, let alone dry so take what I say with a grain of salt... don't any of you remember the days of Sam Hill in the pouring rain, dominating when half the field road the same track in the dry or is Pinkbike just all 16 year olds? Aaron is a phenomenal rider but this isn't the first time in WC Downhill racing that someone can pull off a win like this in the conditions stacked against them. Champery World Cup, 2008.

"This was the best downhill mountain bike race of all time and there'll be few to deny it." Im gona go ahead and disagree simply because it's the internet and I can do that...no doubt was it one of the greatest race runs of all time...but we can't forget that Danny Hart did this and won by...what was it? 11 seconds? Regardless...epic race overall. Props to all the boys sending it!

The 3 Santa Cruz riders all looked to have problems!
Do they make a Shorty or even a wet tyre in a 29" DH size? Them Minion prototypes they were on probably didn't cut it...

Great shots - what a race!

The fastest time of the day still belonged to a Canadian... in the junior division. I'd say the future is looking very bright for World Cup Downhill racing. It's as competitive as ever and that doesn't look like it's changing anytime soon.

Don't edit anything. I can't believe someone is triggered by a swear referencing some imaginary sky daddy.
