What makes the ideal mountain biking location?

Topography? You gotta have mountains, right?!

Dirt? Sandy loam that packs, drains well, is light enough to throw some roost, but dense enough that it rolls fast.

Community? A dedicated cadre of trail building pros and couple of cool local shops? Maybe some other activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Rumors of such a place on the Oregon Coast, just west of Portland, have been circulating for months. A place where some of the world’s best freeriders have seen the possibilities that lie in hero-dirt-hills rolling to the ocean. You’ve probably seen the edits, Instagram clips, ads - each with vague references to the ‘Oregon Coast’ location.

Well, it’s time to put this mecca of MTB on the map.

The Tillamook Off-Road Trail Alliance is proud to announce that we are working in partnership with the Siuslaw NF, Hebo Ranger District in the planning of a possible mountain bike park located just outside of Pacific City.

The trail system is exploring the possibilities for a mix of shuttle-access freeride, downhill, and all-mountain trails to the Tillamook area, with trail options suitable for riders of all ages and abilities.

“The Oregon Coast has some of the best trail building dirt and topography in the world” says local trail-building legend Josh Venti. “The sandy loam we have here in Tillamook county is ideal to build with, it’s what allows us to make trails that are progressive, that push what riders are capable of, but still be forgiving enough to handle the mistakes that often go along with pushing personal boundaries. It offers riders a perfect balance of grip and speed, drains well, and never gets too dry thanks to the cool breeze off the ocean.”

Building trails to world-class standards is a costly endeavor, however. To bankroll the project, TORTA is hosting a fundraiser with support from Norco Bicycles, Lolo Racks, Dakine and Bubs Naturals.

By simply purchasing a TORTA sticker, you’ll be automatically entered to win one of 4 amazing prizes.

A note on Volunteering: The spirit and strength of the Oregon cycling community is always astounding. We’re very fortunate to be working on this project in such a hotbed of trailbuilding energy, and we expect a good number of folks reading this article are willing to pitch in their time and talents to shape these trails. If you are interested in volunteering, please send us a message.

Finally, we want to share our gratitude for being able to craft these trails from traditional Nestucca, Tillamook and Siletz tribal lands.

Having public access to trails like these is gonna be a game changer for the Oregon coast. So stoked!

Fuck yeah! Exactly what we need. Can't wait to come and bum around pacific city in the summers. Thank you so much to everyone pushing this project the direction it needs to go.

Came here for the tortas. Leaving stoked but hungry....

Done! Thanks guys for the new coastal playground. Now we need to find some secret Camper spots up over there.

Question: how does the dirt hold up? Is it a mostly summer ride if you aren't looking to ride the slick? Klootchy creek is pretty fun but getting halfway decent dirt is tricky due to the moisture.

There are plenty of great county, state, and private campgrounds to stay at. Help support our local businesses and campgrounds.

Drains very well, we ride year round hereSmile

Didn't see a single clip without jumps or drops. Hope you guys are building some trails that aren't fully jump lines.

There will be a good variety of trails built, from a skill building area, trails for kids and beginners all the way up to expert.

Already a lot of singletrack on the coast and elsewhere. Well-built jumps/drops, not so much. Looks delish

@wvcyclists: Ahh good news. Maybe try to show that in your marketing, I'd think us old fogeys over 35 would be more interested (and willing to donate) if they saw that variety in the vids/shots.

@ConstructiveEngineering: one issue we had was the footage from the trail day didn’t turn out the best due to the really bad weather we had that day. Torrential rain and darkness all day long. But trust me there will be some amazing single track built there.

We have 30 miles of singletrack flagged and gps'd including a full climb trail. Gonna have trails for everyoneSmile
  • 1 0
@ConstructiveEngineering: I should clarify that we have multiple climb trails planned , however not a complete top to bottom climb trail.

I also don't think the pic on the front page does this atricle justice, it's a picture of a Norco bike not of the rad-ness that is happening here.....just sayin'

About time! You've been teasing us forever. haha Now, you just need to get the powers that be to fix the hot garbage cell reception at my usual campsite and even downtown P.C. Just absolutely horrible coverage there. It's a black hole. I have Verizon, and our camping friends have Spring (?) and both have little to no cell reception. Makes it hard to hang out for a few days and still get work/school taken care of. Sticker bought! Good job crew.

Stoked- if it's anything like Klootchy it's gonna be awesome! That'll be a great place to go when the local trails turn to moon dust in the summer!
  • 1 0
I haven't been out to Klootchy yet. It's pretty far from PDX. How do you like it?
  • 2 0
@mybaben: I was camping at Nehalem this summer and was able to sneak up there for a quick ride and was totally blown away. Not sure if it's because I didn't expect much based on what I saw on TrailForks but the left side (west) was super fun (defibrillator, Oh Chute). The climb on the west side is super well built and leads to some rad trails- Quarantine was amazing (wasn't done when I rode it- I immediately contributed to their trail building fund when I got done riding) I didn't get to ride the rest but looks like there were some really fun looking hand-cut trails through the woods on that side too. Can't wait to get back (also a bit of a haul from Hood River!). One heads up is to fill out the release form prior to riding there, it's probably linked on their Trailforks (or if you Google it)
  • 1 0
@CovertSD: Nice! Thanks mate. Do you think all the trails are listed on Trailforks? I did hear they're going to cut more trails in the future. I'll have to try it some time.

Awesome news! will definitely take some trips up there from southern Oregon!

Worth the drive, especially given the different dirt on the north coast. Riding both in a day would be a real treat if you could make it happen!

 Very stoked for this!

Awesome news, just don’t take my moto trails!
  • 1 0
No moto trails in this particular zone so now worries at allSmile
  • 1 0
@ccrider1: lots of options to sync up with moto trails too, there are some little ridden gems out there in the Trask, DM and other places that would be a lot of fun on a MTB like some of the stuff in Gifford like Trans Cascadia 2019.....
