Another day, another stage!

Stage 6 of the BC Bike Race was short, at only 19km, but on Vancouver's North Shore, that doesn't mean it was easy.

Day 5 took BC Bike Race 49km and 1403m of climbing from Sechelt to Langdale on the Sunshine Coast.

With nearly 1800m of ascending on the day's menu after more than 130km of trail already covered in three days, day 4 is the Queen Stage.

Day six of this year's BC Bike Race took riders to Squamish for what is considered the hardest day of racing, but a favourite among riders.

Over the next 7 days, racers will cover stages totalling more than 550 kilometres as they race a combination of singletrack and logging roads from Victoria to Whistler.

Year two for BC Bike Race – an epic 7 day mountain bike stage race from Victoria to Whistler - is about to get underway. And this year’s ‘Ultimate Singletrack Experience’ is attracting quite the crowd. With its 400 limited spots ‘sold out’ by March 1, BC Bike Race saw an exciting and significant increase in both the caliber of the front runners and the range of countries represented. Racers have signed up from as far as Japan, Australia, Colombia, Morocco, Guadeloupe and Norway and as near as our own backyard of North Vancouver.

Slated for June 28-July 4, the BC Bike Race has begun 2008 registration with a flood of international entries; they are already at 50% capacity and fully expect to sell out all 400 available spots (based on teams of 2, the BCBR also includes teams of 4).

This year’s inaugural July 1-7 run of the BC Bike Race turned some heads as race organizers defined their flavor - “The Ultimate Singletrack Experience” - in the world of epic mountain bike stage racing. It’s no surprise then that Chris Eatough, the winner of this year’s event and six-time 24-hour World Champion, praised, “The BC Bike Race was amazing. The best MTB race in the world, no doubt.”

On yet another glorious sun-splashed day in British Columbia, the inaugural BC Bike Race: The Pacific Traverse came to an end on July 7, 2007.

Once again top stage honors went to the Trek-Volkswagen duo of Chris Eatough and Jeff Schalk, who after zipping along at 100kph on a Skyline cable ride, zipped around the singletrack-laden Whistler time trial course in 1:29:51.

In every stage race there is a defining day that stands above the rest. In the inaugural BC Bike Race: The Pacific Traverse that day came Friday during the arduous 58-kilometer journey from Squamish to Whistler.

The sheer amount of climbing — over 2500 meters — was daunting enough. But when you added in an extensive menu of technical trails and black diamond descending, it was enough to make some of the event’s 160 hardened riders cry — literally.

Trek-Volkswagen’s Jeff Schalk summed up the feelings of nearly every rider who took the start line for stage 5 of the B.C. Bike Race — The Pacific Traverse with this simple assessment of the 58-kilometer fun ride from Sechelt to the Langdale Ferry Terminal.

“It was honestly one of the first times I’ve totally forgotten about the race and just enjoyed the ride,” said Schalk, who along with teammate Chris Eatough won their fifth straight stage and maintained a commanding lead in the overall standings ahead of the Rocky Mountain duo of Andreas Hestler and Kevin Calhoun. “It was just me and a friend bombing through the woods. That’s never happened to me before, so it really says a lot about the course.”

Getting out of bed at 5 a.m. is never easy, but the prospect of two spectacular ferry rides made the task a little easier for the riders and staff of the B.C. Bike Race: The Pacific Traverse.

After finishing stage 3 with a thrill ride down the technical trails outside Cumberland, then spending a restful night on the soft patch of grass between the town’s water park and BMX track, stage 4 kicked off at dawn Wednesday, with the entire B.C. Bike Race entourage loading up for the short drive to the BC Ferries terminal at Little River.

While hot spots like Whistler, Squamish and the North Shore draw the bulk of the attention when you think mountain biking in British Columbia, the sleepy town of Cumberland is rapidly earning it’s own place among B.C.’s fat tire elite.

With a growing network of technical singletrack trails all within a quick pedal of downtown, it’s an ideal destination for anyone looking for a little adventure on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island.

The profile for Monday’s leg of the B.C. Bike Race: The Pacific Traverse resembled a Richter scale graph before and after an earthquake. For 70-plus kilometers everything was reasonably calm, as riders rolled up and down along the logging roads that helped bridge the 118km stage 2 gap between Lake Cowichan and Port Alberni.

On a day when Canada celebrated its 140th year of nationhood, nearly 200 mountain bikers from all over North America and beyond commemorated a birth — the birth of B.C. Bike Race — The Pacific Traverse.

Indeed, July 1st Canada Day was also day one of the seven-stage mountain bike epic that will see riders cover over 500 kilometers as they make their way from the southern reaches of Vancouver Island all the way to the famed trails of Whistler.
