Taxco Downhill Practice

Taxco. It's an old silver mining town built up the side of a mountain. Its streets and side walks are a maze of slick cobble stone pavers. Ten years ago a race started here, down the back alleys and steep steps of the city. In the past couple of years that race has picked up steam and now it is an event pulling in riders from across the globe. There is a stacked field of DH racers and freeriders. Because it runs through the heart of the city and does a fair amount of disrupting traffic, it has a simple two day format. Day one - practice. Day two - race and best trick. Racers took to the streets today to come to grips with, well, the lack of grip and bone rattling stairs.

It may be my age but I still enjoy the photography on PB more than video. I either feel like I'm there or I want to be there. Photographer job done.
  • + 10
I could not agree more! Photos let your mind develop the story rather than it being shown to you. Like reading a book before it turns into a movie...
  • + 6
When the photography is as good as this it speaks more than any 3minute can.
  • + 8
Thanks guys. I'm glad you enjoy all the hard work we put in to bring you these stories.
  • + 1
Tough call, but for this type of story, yes. You get more of feel for the environment , the vibe of the place when you can scan a photo. Videos are about the action in the place more, to me at least. It's the difference b/n walking through a place and driving it.

I keep on thinking "oh boy a taco downhill race" and then getting bummed out when I realize I misread it

HAHAHA whatt!? xD btw why is there armed guards there? and why is there a Explosion guard, is he going to throw explosion on the thiefs or what? and why do they use Auto weapons, is it not enough with a regular pistol?!
  • + 13
Obviously you don't know how fucked parts of Mexico are.. Haha

@BullseyeXer Wait for a few more years and with the current immigration trends you'll soon need the same guards in Stockholm (and Malmo and other cities)...

I'm sure drug cartel members are frequent visitors to this site.
  • - 3
@Jaggers: Legalize the drugs and the cartels will disappear. It was the same in USA during the prohibition.
  • + 5
They don't desappear, they just move to another type of business..
  • + 1
HAHAHA @Extremmist yea i know, in a few years sweden maybe will be like USA or Mexico you never know how a country can change in a few years xD. @Jaggers sorry for joking about the mexicans xD bro i know why they use that kind of weapons but i dont think the cartel will interupt a Downhill race if they know that the people like it, but i dont know, maybe they do it anyway cuz that kind of bike they use in Downhill taxco are pretty expensive. One thing i dont get is why there was a guard there with explosives?
  • + 2
@BullseyeXer The patch means that the guard is a pyrotechnic, that means his job is to search for explosives, not to carry explosives.
Btw " i dont think the cartel will interupt a Downhill race" - in Mexico it's more likely that a downhill race will interrupt a cartel Big Grin
  • + 1
@Extremmist haha yea i understand now thanks! Big Grin but maybe the cartel likes to watch the downhill races then the downhill race dont interrupt the cartel xD

man, I do not want to sound rude, but there is a lot more in Mexico than just Riviera Maya, there are lots of incredible places that are not huge resorts including a beach and hot weather, there are lots of places to explore here in Mexico. Cheers Big Grin

What a mess to destroy a wall of a typical and ancestral Mexican building... Look how nice was this white facade before. This wasn't needed to keep this race amazing !
  • + 4
I'm sure Redbull or whomever will restore it and the residents will be compensated. The compensation to them is far more valuable than a picturesque facade. I only hope this is the case.
  • + 2
I spoke to the owner...they will get compensated very well. He also mentioned how stocked he was to be part of the race ..they do it gladly. Plus it will get rebuilt just as it was...city will pay it.
  • + 1
 Epic drop, though!
  • + 2
Happy to know the owner will get compensation ! But it still a strange way to see it FOR ME : destroy something with a "soul" to get the owner a compensation...
I lived in Paris, on the french riviera and now close to Chamonix, where history is everywhere, so I guess I'm certainly too French to understand that ! ahah
  • + 2
yeah, i understand what you are saying. I lived in Europe for some years and i had a similar opinion when looking into Mexico from the outside in; try seeing it this way it might help... that "soul" you are mentioning is somehow nostalgia when a local sees it from the "inside out". Nostalgia is sometimes bad, it keeps people away from taking risks and it keeps people being afraid of change, in this case the owner did something different, he embraced change, took a risk...then after the event his house got rebuilt just as it was, that nostalgia turned into a lived EXPERIENCE for him and his family, the people that live there NOW.
Also the owner can now say, - my house its been part of Taxco's history since the late 1500s during the silver mining years up to now the 2000s during an internatioonal event which brings some of the best riders in the world -, very few families can say that
