Team Registration Fees to Increase for 2023 World Cup Racing

One of the big rumours going into the off-season about the changes coming to World Cups next year was the potential increase of team fees to $20,000. With the latest round of the information from the UCI this has turned out to be pretty accurate. Following the announcement of Enduro reaching World Cup status and the rule changes for downhill next year, it looks like the rumour of team fees rising are true.

While the headline-grabbing figure of €23,000 will only be for Elite MTB Teams competing in all three formats, the annual registration fees have risen for every type of team. An Elite Team riding in one format will see an increase from €3,500 in 2022 to €11,000 next year, while a two-format team increases from €6,000 to €18,000.

The price rises for next year have not just affected the Elite Teams as the MTB Team fees have also risen with double the cost compared to 2022.

The prize money for race results has not changed. XC and DH Elite wins remain at €3,750. Enduro has now been added to the prize money chart, with an Elite win netting €1,000. There is a parity for the overall wins between XC, XCC, DH and Enduro.

Privateer/individual riders registering for each race will also see a rise in costs next year as Elite (and U23 for XC) downhill and XC entry rising from €80 to €150. A Junior downhill racer will now need to pay €80 instead of the €40 this year. XC Marathon, Enduro and E-enduro races will have to pay €150 entry fees.

 The UCI sucks ass. They have always treated MTB as a side show compared to other cycling sports. Dumb rules, low prize pots and keeping the majority of races in Europe. I say we get this elitist european union out of the sport because they are clearly not interested in MTB.

 5000 EUR for an elite DH win???? No disrespect to any of the other disinclines, but the danger factor of DH alone proves how out of wack (and plain wack) these numbers are. No doubt that top XC riders deserve much more as well.

Folks say a break away series can't happen? These numbers say otherwise...IMO. Hell, I'll shell out a some bucks for premium access, provided it's a good product, if that's what we need to get these athletes paid.

 Why should it? F1 drivers get no prize money for winning a race or even the championship. They are paid to race by their sponsors

 @chrismac70: teams get a large amount of prize money in F1 by way of money FOM gets commercial rights. Despite the fact that F1 prize money is not paid to the drivers directly, you better believe that's a big part of their take home, especially for a younger unproven driver.

 @calcrossland26: Not irrelevant, because you're right (which I didn't know and that is crazy to me). But for MXGP you've got a ton more visibility as MXGP is arguably more mainstream than the UCI races so bigger payout to riders per race from sponsors. The sponsors in the MXGP world are also arguably bigger (read have more money) than those in the MTB world so they are willing to throw more money at teams.

Another point, although not a great one: If MXGP racers don't like MXGP pay then they could go to the USA and race the Outdoor Motocross races that are paying out $50,000 USD to winners per race. With UCI MTB races there really isn't any other option.

 Unless there are noticeable, positive changes that come with this, there is nothing to show me that the UCI is no different than FIFA or the IOC in being money grabbing, corrupt A-holes. They charge venues outrageous fees and now hugely increase fees for teams to show up. If someone knows what those extra fees bring in better support, better coverage, better medical (Brook would disagree) etc., I would be greatly interested in hearing.

I'm pretty sure I could phone around a bunch of ski resorts and see if they wanted to put on a wc race worhout having to pay for it... thats basicslly where the UCI's input ends, not like there's any actual prize money being put out... I reckon after a couple of days on the phone I could put together a 20 race series for next year before xmas.

 The UCI are no longer charging hosting fees; that's now the job of Discovery/Warner/ESO Sports......Exactly the same as in F1, MotoGP,...the Promoter runs the whole show, not the governing body.

 I’d say as they named that evil dictator, who has done absolutely nothing for cycling, their man of the year a couple years ago the corruption is quite deep. It is definitely time for a new series that involves no current cycling orginization. It least there would be a few years without it becoming corrupt as they all seem to eventually.  The prize money has always been a joke, but with the increased entry fee, its an even bigger slap to the face. I hope that new rider union will meet soon, they have to speak up. This is an insult for the people that give their all for the sport and risk their health and life for results and sport promotion. At this point, better for them to just be a brand ambassador with video edits, insta posts, etc. They are already living off of purely sponsor money.

 This should be fuel for grassroots races all over the world. US Open, Canadian DH Open, even Crankworx races. Low prize money at UCI races quite literally shows how much they value these athletes.  In the early 80's, BMX racing had $50,000 prize purses. I think NORBA even paid out more than the UCI does now in the very beginning, around 1990. We had a promoter running local mtb races, the pro classes he paid back 15 places and did times 1 for the top 10 (double entry fee pay out position 9, winner got 10x entry fee). Even handed out $500-$1000 total prizes for the amateur classes. Some guy bought the series after 3 seasons, first place got a trophy. It sucked. I can't stand the greed these days.

 I don't understand why the prize pots are so low, it should start at 10k and something substantial for the overall win. I'm presuming the fees are going up to produce more top end elite riders, bringing it maybe down to 60 riders total instead of 100+ but they should also increase the rewards with that!

 I am surprised to see how small the purse is. It does not seem sustainable to be a professional mountain biker, even moreso when you consider the risk of injuries.

This seems to paint a less than rosy picture. Majority of riders are taking out their own private insurance. Most feel inadequately supported in the case of serious injury. More than 70% of riders are paid less than 50k in total earnings.

 What is the reasoning behind the increase in fees and the small prize money? The racers are going to work more (with finals and semi-finals) and they are going to be paid less... What is the value ESO and WB are supposed to bring???
Even corrupt F1 and Moto have a way better redistribution. UCI decided cycling is a show so let's pay the performers!!

 It's not the Worldcups job to be an grass roots program. It's the worldcup! This means toplevel racing worldwide *cough* with the best athletes imaginable.
i'd go as far and say not even a qualifier is necessairy and directly start with the semi finals and finals.
entry fee in this case is absolutely fine. price money is ridiculous tough.

this would open the door for a new serie, let's say "continental" serie which replaces the qualifing round at each worldcup. every continent has it's own serie and the top 10% of each serie is directly qualified for the worldcup next year. couple of wildcards etc.
yes, this means privateers will most likly not be riding any worldcup at all. their place is the continental serie in which they fight for the best spots, to probably one day become a worldcup rider. if it's not every riders dream to become worldcuprider, they're probably better off in a continental serie anyway.

this would be the grass roots program. red bull as a worldwide operator and knowhow in mountain biking would totally be capable of pulling something like that off.

 I’m pretty sure Claudio and Rob could pool their talent and investors together to start up a new series to boot the UCI. Heck they could even have Bernard Kerr manage it. If he can ride, race and manage a World Cup team all at once, I’m pretty sure he could handle things better than the UCI. Just saying!

 What a joke!!! It is the riders that MAKE this sport, everyone else's JOB or ROLE is ultimately secondary. All this pandering and compromise so higher ups can make more money while kneecapping the actual racing and riding is so bonkers. It is insane that 1/2 the riding (some of/ if not the highest level of riding in the world) at rampage this year was shelved on the day of "because t.v." Really hope the Riders take back the sport and get what they deserve, without them dedicating there lives and passion to drive and develop this sport none of this 'INDUSTRY" would exist.

The Dh tracks are not at wc level. Maybe a pairing with redbull or others on an additional level or complimentary series would be relevant

 What's stopping the "elite" guys from just showing up without an official team affiliation? Does the team registration get some sort of priority? Or are smaller guys like Neko going to have to pay 11k to race?

 Independent riders and small teams can still race, but their teams/sponsors won't show up on the results sheets, and teams need to pay up for pit space on a race by race basis. UCI teams get a certain amount of space at all UCI events.

I could be mistaken but I believe if you're a top tier Elite team the entry fee's are included in the team fee. Which at 150 euros a race can add up quickly.

 If you don't register as a team elite you don't have a space for your pit and you don't have a bib for your team manager to come at the finish or on the track and you also don't have any media right so no video or anything which is a problem with the sponsor. Team elite is only for the top 15 teams based on the points of the riders.

 I have not read all the replies. But what is the benefit to the riders by racing in UCI events. Is it because there is not many other elite level series? Will it cost us to watch? If so will teams get a cut of those proceeds? Could Chris Ball now work with RedBull and create that new series?

 Pinkbike comments section logic- No one wants to pay to watch world cups, however riders should be paid more money

 The advertisers are already paying, and you are viewing their logos so they are getting what they want. Why the f*ck should you have to pay to see their logos all over the track?

If you follow/participate the sport of mtb you better get used to advertising, for example the site your on right now is pretty much one big advertisement

 Their new rules are sh1te. The money is a disgrace. The UCI will probably put much of the money in to road racing. Breakaway! They are a joke.

 Let's be honest though, this prizemoney seems really generous, you have to remember its split across both men and women and multiple and a small percentage to juniors, across multiple disciplines.
As much as we all like mountain biking and as it is a lifestyle sport to many on here, we forget to remember that it is an extremely small sport, and the world cup races probably make almost zero profit for the UCI. If the UCI were to publish the money made from mtb world cup/world champs revenue that riders are probably seeing a higher percentage of the profit then the players at the recent Football world cup ( and before you say DH is more dangerous then football, Yes it is, but that really has no thing to do with profit).
Until MTB has a proper TV deal (this is where most of the money in sports in made) this is unfortunately probably a fair amount of prize money

 I agree. You only have to look at road racing where most of the money for teams doesn’t come from the cycling industry at all. Virtually none of the top teams have a bike brand as a title sponsor

 One of the many great things about cycling is its free, this is clearly lost on the UCI.

 An entry level bike is like 4-5k, race fees cost about ads much for a race weekend as it does for a season of other sports. Cycling is far far far far far far from free

 @deco1: My dh bike is now basically a subscription model. Every time I want to ride it, it costs me £100.
£40-50 uplift
£50ish on fuel to get it to a mountain
