I respect the hell out of all of these athletes, but it’s fun to see someone from the United States (Kate) do so well. The US isn’t known for the fastest XC riders.

I suspect that some Europeans are doing a rehearsal of what works to peak by August, this year there will be two world cups and the world championships in August. And next year the Olympics will be in August too. So I suspect Nino Schurter, Manuel Fumic, Annika Langvad, and Maja Wloszczowska (among others) not to do Cape Epic in 2020 for the same reason (the four of them did very well at Cape Epic 2019 but not the 'best' start of world cup season).
Jolanda Neff has been saying in all interviews the same: "I haven’t been riding my MTB so much". In 2015-2016 she burned herself riding the Swiss Cup, World Cups and almost every single C1 race in Europe, plus some injuries. So I suspect 2019 is a rehearsal for what she will do in 2020.
Nino Schurter was a super human in 2016 winning all but the overall. But he is getting old and probably won’t try again to win Cape Epic, the Olympics and the World Championships.
Same reason why Mathieu Van der Poel is not racing in June-July, he wants to peak in August (after a long CX season, he needs a rest).

: interesting perspective. Given how the World Cup season is so short I would think most athletes would want to be at peak physical condition during May of each year.

: Athletes set their goals for the year way in advance, and they make adjustments accordingly. Nino and Jolanda already have many world cups trophies; probably they would love to win every single race, but is very difficult to be at your best from May to September or March to September if you include Cape Epic.
During 2013, 2014, and 2015 it was crazy to see battling Pauline Ferrand Prevot and Jolanda Neff; but at a great cost for their bodies.
. Pauline wrote about her case on Twitter or Facebook years ago, but I can’t find it now.

: Found it.
Pauline Ferrand-Prevot's words (2016)
Jolanda Neff's words (2016)

I watched F1, Indy and the Coke 600 and the best racing all day was the women's XCO. Kate is simply incredible and gives the USA a real chance of Olympic Gold.
