Tech Randoms Part 2 - Crankworx Rotorua 2020

Mar 5, 2020
by Aidan Oliver
Round 2 of new tech from Crankworx Rotorua, there were a few goodies still lurking in the corners of the pits.

Peaty's

Tired of throwing away bent or leaky valves? Well Peaty's valves may cost a pretty penny at $28 USD, but if you bend, crack or break them they will send you a new one for free. For life! Not bad...

Peaty's also had their full range of sealants and de greasers on show.

Camelbak

Camelbak had their new 'urban/commuter' range of packs on show, which are made from 50% recycled plastics. The range consists of a back pack, tote bag and hip back.

Trek Project One

Trek had a very cool Project One Slash on show to celebrate the bikes addition to the program. It ain't cheap ($1000 to $3000), but you can now completely custom paint your Slash which is also assembled in the US.

It's even possible to get text embossed into the paintwork. Very trick.

Spank

6 pawls, each with 3 steps. That's a lot of engagments.

Spank had their new Hex Drive hub on show at their booth. The hub has 102 teeth, six independent pawls and each with 3 steps. This creates 18 points of contact and 3.5 degrees of engagement. Another nice for touch for these hubs is that the entire hub can be taken apart and serviced with just a soft hammer. No tools and easy to do by the home mechanic.

Fox

Fox had their new speed frame helmet on show.

Hope and Trust

When boutique meets unique. This Hope HB130 with a Trust fork drew a lot of eyes.

Maxxis

Maxxis had a cool story to tell at their booth. Last year at Crankworx Rotorua the Assegai (a Zulu spear) Tire was rebranded as the Taiaha (a Maori spear) Tire with all proceeds going to local trails. Well, a year has gone by and the Rotorua Trails trust have just finished the new Tuteata trail using last year's proceeds.

The Trust fork actually matches that Hope frame really well - has kinda an alien organic look to it. The offspring might burst out of your chest, mind...

Instead of an alien bursting out of your chest, It's your money bursting out of your wallet

So...you rename "Ass guy" (you know thats why they're doing it) to "Taiaha"!..something Im pretty sure Arnold Schwarzenegger yelled in Predator .
Great job ,Maxxis.
"Zulu Spear" woulda been fine.
"Ground Ripper" woulda been better

I hope you can trust that bike.
  • 1 1
It does look better with a black frame ... and if you catch the light just right, you can make it look a little less like a praying mantis Wink

@jonlees: money IN my wallet is pretty alien. . .

never-never put that much goldano on your bike it looks like a Ferrari butchered by some emirates billionaire.
  • 34 1
Not even! Needs Spengle Gold and stem diamonds you pheasant fool!
  • 26 2
It's Orange and it looks way more Orangey in person than the photo's appear.

Hopes got a good orange, I think Chris King does too. The rest seem to be copper/gold in colouring more than Orange.

Disclaimer: I bought discounted Hope Hubs that were orange and now I'm in so damn deep with Orange hope kit... I got the Hubs, Spacers, Rotors, Seat Clamp, Bar plugs, Stem Cap, even painted my Magura Caliper covers orange, my Orange Seal vales got the little orange nut on them... in too deep. I still need lockrings for my grips in Hope Orange and a stem. Then I think i'm done being a fashionista.

@Cheddar420: done being a fashionista? Where's your Hope brakes? Magura... You might as well have a full English with Frankfurters...
  • 3 0
@catweasel: nah gonna give him the benefit of the doubt meaning "peasant" -which would be correct as i forgot the spengle wheels. But according to google there is also a song called "fools gold" by the band "pheasant"-that would be next level memeing.

Russian biznessman wants gold on bike......give him gold on bike. Is very nice!!!
  • 4 2
@BenPea: If the levers weren't so darn pricey I would have grabbed 'em. The MT5's levers will probably get broken inside 6 months and need to be replaced if my history is anything to go by.

It was a hard pill to swallow, I have nightmares about my orange caliper covers falling out and my calipers having no orange on them.... Was even debating going with the RX4 4pot road caliper but couldn't find a lot of people doing it on MTB's with 203mm rotors, I've put on 45,000lbs over the winter so I need breaks that work... still tempted to try it, and fiddle with lever combo's.

MT5's are pretty cheap from Germany, cheapest pair of 4pot brakes I'm pretty sure. Sons-a-bitches are a pain in the ass with the magnet retention and pad rub. If my bikes in the stand the angle of the bike determines if my pads rub or not. That should be fun on the trail rattlin around like a f*cking diamondback. Going to grab the 4 separate pads with the pins and see if that helps.
  • 6 1
@Cheddar420: just get the god damn Hopes and fulfil your destiny
  • 2 1
@Cheddar420: That's my only complaint with my MT5s as well. They stop like crazy and feel good (I don't mind the lever, I guess I've gotten used to it), but damn are they hard to allign and run without pad rub. Not sure if it's a problem with all 4piston brakes but the pads wear unevenly for me too. The back pad will always wear more than the front pad. Not enough to justify buying new SLX 4 pistons but it's a pain.
  • 2 1
IMO the "problem" is to have color anodised cranks. I would keep these black (or raw) to break the colored surface with the pedals. Cranks are huge flat parts that draw a lot of attention if they're colored, so the crankset kind of becomes the "center of attention" of the bike which usually is the stem or downtube sticker.
An orange "Hope" sticker on the downtube would draw attention back to the frame.
I don't plug my work much but you can see a bit how my CG bikes illustrate this here :
www.artstation.com/artwork/RY0ERv
I rarely ever use colored cranks as I find it puts too much color.
  • 5 1
@OCSunDevil: Run MT7 pads with the 4 separate ones. Pad rub will disappear. With those pads the MT brakes are the easiest brakes to setup on the market.
  • 2 1
@gus6464: Thanks man, I'll get those next time around!
  • 3 1
@big-red: That was funny. I don't care what they say

"six independent pawls and each with 3 steps"

This is worded so confusingly. What does independent pawls mean? They move independently? Well, all pawls are like that. They engage independently? Well, that's terrible since all the force will go through a single pawl at a time. It's also incorrect. 3 steps? More like three teeth, since all three engage together.

"6 independent pawls with 3 steps per pawl, work in unison, meaning 18 engagement points per click" - from Spank.

So you guys basically plagiarized Spank's own crappy wording, adding "each" to make it seem like different, but still terrible wording.

So Spank is launching a rebranded hub

www.kttw-hub.com/pro.php?m=l&f=4&cid=7
  • 26 2
Wait... Bike companies rebrand stuff from Taiwan and sell it? My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
  • 4 4
You do know that's how most industries work right?
  • 2 1
@speedy06: And all this time I was sure the mountain bike industry/community was a creative world with unique ideas to solve real problems without creating a duplicate of something already on the market.
  • 2 1
Rebranded or not, anyone know if these are good hubs?

Either way, they seem better than their previous hubs, which were some sort of formula/nova tech hub as far as I know.
  • 2 1
@ocnlogan: I really like their rims, have built them with I9 hubs on couple different bikes. but the hub was definitely the weak point with their wheelsets, seems these really have potential
  • 2 1
 @artistformlyknowasdan:

You have exactly what I've been thinking about doing (i9 1/1/hydra with 350/359 vibrocore rims for me).

But these hubs actually look much more promising than the old ones. Just curious because these appear to be rebrands, if anyone has used them before, as it seems I could save a few hundred bucks on a full wheel build.
  • 1 1
@ocnlogan: I had a set of Superstar Electros which is the same hub, two snapped axles and the threads of the hub shell striped off once. At least the warranty service was decent enough to take care of.
  • 11 3
Hehe maybe trek could do something about that outdated geo instead
  • 5 2
Just the STA. It would be nice not to have to run the seat forward of center on the post. But......Slash is still a ripping ride!!
  • 1 3
and ditch the knockblock, seriously, if it was such a good idea then there would be copycats .... but instead it's crickets.
  • 3 2
@peleton7: 65.6 and 1219 wheelbase for large is trail bike territory, not to mention 160mm front travel.

For the brand flagship enduro bike, that is not enough. Enduro bikes need to be monster trucks that erase terrain underneath them.
  • 2 1
 @nurseben: Maybe it's patent protected?
  • 1 0
@phops: 65 in the low chip * Thats not outdated IMO
  • 1 0
@Jumartel5: Still short on the wheelbase.
  • 6 1
New valves for life when they get clogged really ? I think you need to read the warranty on Peatys website.
  • 9 1
Haha, the website clearly states that clogged valves are NOT under warranty.
  • 7 3
@sidlondon: Good spot, we'll chalk that up to the guys getting this up past midnight in Rotorua. We've edited it now
  • 22 1
"Tired of throwing away bent or leaky valves?"
Then Peatys won't help you at all. You will still throw away bent and leaky valves. Only this time you pay for the replacement in advance, instead of when you need it.
  • 1 1
@jamessmurthwaite: cool thanks, I thought that deal was too good to be true.
  • 11 1
@fiatpolski: So when it clogs, take it off and bend it and send it in.
  • 5 1
@Ttimer: and you have to wait for it to turn up, instead of having one spare in the garage
  • 8 3
"Tired of throwing away bent or leaky valves?" Then throw away your presta valves, fire up the drill and get schraeder valves already!
  • 3 1
@Ttimer: No doubt. Valve cores is one of my go-to items when I only have $1.00 in ebay bucks.

Honestly fair for a custom paint job depending on what goes into it. I'd much rather support a local artist and get a lot more freedom of design though.
  • 5 4
Hahaha, this price is a joke! Dentists prepare your credit cards and stay in line please.
  • 12 2
How about a $10 paint job? Markers and a can of clear lacquer. Hipster doodle art is sooo in right now.

  • 9 5
No one is forcing you to buy it... If it's your baby and you're willing to spend big money on your expensive bike... Then why not?
  • 3 4
I have personally seen project one Top Fuel and Madone looking EXACTLY as 9.9 versions, only difference being... Project One logo on them
  • 1 1
I may have paid the best part of a grand last year to repaint a well built US made steel frame properly rather than the half arsed powdercoat it came with. So Trek is definitely on to something here...
  • 3 4
@WAKIdesigns: From there, a friend very recently had his P1 swing arm crack (again). Lifetime warranty on the frame, five year on the swing arm...what the hell use is a lifetime warranty worth if a swing arm is absolutely needed for the bike to function? Effectively, the bike has a five year warranty.
  • 6 1
@silentbutdeadly: the local custom car guy has done a pair of steel hardtails for me and they cost less than $400 each and that included painted logos and $50 for sandblasting. You may have to shop around a little more!
  • 2 1
@RoadStain: from what I know, Trek out af many black sheep is rather good at honoring the warranty
  • 3 2
@WAKIdesigns: Agreed - but, on my Specialized (the direct competitor) I have a lifetime on the frame AND the swingarm. Seems to be a hole that many consumers would not be aware of..."Trek has a lifetime warranty" is a sales tool. On a road bike that is very valid, on a DS MTN? Well, not so much.
  • 3 1
We sell several P1 bikes every year... Its not just paint but components, cockpit, matchy bottle cages, cable housing color, tire selection, etc.
The triathlon folks and roadies eat it up.
If you wanted your slash with Rock Shox suspension and Shimano XTR with aluminum wheels and a different cockpit than what is typically offered, you can do that to. Custom paint isn't necessarily what P1 is about. The paint adds $$$ to the job, but if you just want a top spec bike with hand chosen components you can do it for about $1k.
  • 3 1
The price is so high because usually Trek paint and build them in the far east, but for all P1 jobs, they are shipped to America and painted and built there by Trek's own workers, so they have to pay for fast shipping to and from America too, as well as a custom, warrantied paintjob.
  • 3 1
@WAKIdesigns: thats the ultimate luxury, pay more just because you just dont care.
  • 1 1
 I want a Mansory Edition.
  • 1 1
@Ben-76: I always wonder how lightfast those marker jobs are... Time will tell I guess.
  • 1 2
@jodek: and youll still have to deal with those slack ass seat tube angles.
  • 1 2
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: But, can I get a GIANT IronMan logo on my Tri bike? I am training for an Ironman next spring...I am not looking forward to having to swim 1500 meters......

(heard from SO many triathletes)
  • 5 1
@Spark24: you could have your actual baby tattooed all over for less
  • 2 0
 @RoadStain:
Better on the bike than on the rider...
  • 3 2
@parkourfan: My joke (at IM finish) was that I was going to get Kleenex tattooed on the side of my nose as it was my brand preference for tissue. Same thing. An IronMan M-Dot is no different than getting a Ford F350 tatt on your calf.

Almost as pathetic as calling the YMCA sprint race one..."I am doing an Ironman Saturday morning, but I can meet you for lunch at say, 11:30".....
  • 2 1
I beat my bikes up so much that all I want in a finish is one that makes it easier to clean and prevent dings and scratches. Custom paint and pretty doodags, fuck people, ride the damn thing, it's a damn bike not friggin art!
  • 2 1
@RoadStain: for an Ironman finisher, you have a very apt username. Love it!
  • 1 1
@NickBit: This was our local custom car guy...he charges $120/hr. Job included blasting, powdercoat primer, paint down tube, seat tube, chainstays and dropouts one colour then mask off around twin top tube/seat stay connections and paint top tubes and stays with another colour....then sand and clear coat the lot. I'd have saved a tonne of coin if it was single colour!!!
  • 1 1
@silentbutdeadly: that sounds pretty awesome and perhaps my guy hasn’t works out how much bike riders will actually pay for a fancy spray tan. I’ll pm ya a pic if I can work out how.
  • 1 1
ah Spank hubs, man 5 years of abuse and semi-regular service, still going strong. Engangment is shit, but because my bike has a lot of pedal kickback, balance is there. Nice to see some better ones and easily servicable
