When mechanics cut knobs off racers tyres can they please donate them to us riders who just wear our tyres down naturally so we can glue them back on?
  • 234 0
Or can they mail us the tires, we ride them for a couple weeks, then give them back for race day?

Maybe Retyre can branch out from their zip off treads to tread blocks with snaps. Add and remove as needed.
  • 9 3
We can fly to the moon, but why is it not possible to produce already „cut“ tires?
  • 5 0
@bg-EVIL: You lose the adjustability. Reason is that they can cut at different heights, 1 out of 2/3 knobs to alter the pattern...
So basically you have 1 tyre (so 1 mould) than can be adjusted to fit multipe scenarii

Fun fact: most of the teams discard their used tires after a World Cup race so if you are lucky enough to make it to the venue you might leave with some souvenirs if you look hard enough.

The question is,how good do the Braking brakes brake?
  • 1 0
@nozes: About as good as wood chuck can chuck wood. They have been in the moto game forever but i don’t think they make moto brakes. Just pads and rotors. Good stuff though. Those brakes look trick for sure.

Yeah I had to look that thing up. Would definitely purchase if I still had my shop. Heck I'm still thinking about it. LOL

It's actually really satisfying once you get the hang of it. Bead's gotta be in the rim's center channel. If I get desperate on the last part of the bead, I'll pull out the heat gun. Getting the tire not to wobble after install, now that's a different story.

Did fox stop calling them 49s?
  • 4 0
Did anybody else notice that the prototype brakes are dual pot? Maybe a stupid question, but wouldn't that be underpowered for dh?
  • 3 0
The power depends on a few things: piston area, pad friction, rotor size, caliper stiffness, lever kinematics...

So, they may lack some power, or they may not. It's hard to know just by looking.
  • 1 0
It doesn't matter if they manage to dissipate heat well
  • 2 0
piston count doesn't make a difference in braking power, only piston area does (and it's relation to main cylinder area).
btw, the discs aren't prototypes - they're already being sold and gome in some nice colourways.

The only "Tech" on the entire page was the prototype Braking brakes. Every other photo falls under the category "pretty aesthetics for people who don't know which end of a screwdriver to hold"
Please can we get back to having actual tech? I don't care how pretty someone elses paintjob is.
  • 3 0
I mean I get this but it is the last race of season surely not much new tech is going to be there that wasn't there most of the year.
  • 2 2
@Nopantsdougie: Then don't have the article. I'm so tired of all the fancyboys who have taken over this sport. No word of a lie I was speaking to some dude recently who told me he'd "customised every single component on his bike to get it set up exactly how he liked". Intruiged I had a look over it, and was like "I can't see any mods whatsoever, whats custom about it?" He replied "the paint job dude!!"
I've never been more disappointed in a person in my life.
  • 1 0
@gabiusmaximus: HAHA yeah for sure some people think just putting on non stock parts means "custom" but i think this is more of a scenes in the pits and early its usually all new tech but i still like the article every event reggardless. to each their own though!

So what am I missing here? Organic pads on a DH bike? For me its a night and day difference- metallic pads have so much more power and more importantly don't fade on long, steep descents.
  • 41 3
Yeah, they prolly have no idea what they’re doing….amateurs
  • 4 0
I recently used some finned shimano organic pads in my rear brake after forgetting to order new pads. Was really impressed with them. They did fade a little riding really steep 3 minute tracks (on an enduro bike) but I guess I brake a lot more than the pros. I remember reading a brake test article a few years ago (think it was enduro mag) that said syndicate riders were using 1 sintered and 1 organic pad in each calliper to get the best of both worlds.
  • 8 0
What you are missing is those riders don't ride like us.
  • 2 5
@onawalk: Hence the "what am I missing". Its obvious they go faster/further/stronger than us, but why would you want less braking power and more brake fade?
  • 4 0
@hamncheez: IIRC organic pads have greater initial bite, especially at lower temps, than metallic pads. It could also just come down to rider preference.
  • 5 0
@hamncheez: also, they brake way less and more precisely than us mortals. Less braking, less fade. The trade off is probably for improved feel and modulation for making those small braking adjustments and then throwing in a fresh set for the next day. Comparatively, I yank on the anchors whilst screaming, skidding and then hopefully not ending up on the floor and then still dragging my brakes whilst I walk most of the scary stuff- I'll go through a set of organic pads in a day at the bike park and most of a rear tire too as a result.
  • 4 0
@arnie86: Exactly. These riders aren’t using brakes the way we do. They’ll probably also use them for the weekend and get new ones at the next race.
  • 1 1
Those Breaking rotor looks amazing. Where to buy them?

 nice photo bomb Wyn.
  • 3 6
Those bike lifts sure are fancy, but if my mechanic ever asked for one, I'd start worrying about their strength and ability to hit torque specs!
  • 4 0
These are bicycles, there is essentially nothing that has anywhere near a high torque spec. In fact, most of the time I have my inch-lb torque wrench on hand because everything is so low.
  • 2 0
Must not have your sarcasm detector on hand...
