@bg-EVIL: You lose the adjustability. Reason is that they can cut at different heights, 1 out of 2/3 knobs to alter the pattern... So basically you have 1 tyre (so 1 mould) than can be adjusted to fit multipe scenarii
Fun fact: most of the teams discard their used tires after a World Cup race so if you are lucky enough to make it to the venue you might leave with some souvenirs if you look hard enough.
An interesting change of perspective... my partner just looked over my shoulder at the pic of the stripped down Commencal and said 'Man, you'd be pissed if your cat jumped up on that table.'
@nozes: About as good as wood chuck can chuck wood. They have been in the moto game forever but i don’t think they make moto brakes. Just pads and rotors. Good stuff though. Those brakes look trick for sure.
It's actually really satisfying once you get the hang of it. Bead's gotta be in the rim's center channel. If I get desperate on the last part of the bead, I'll pull out the heat gun. Getting the tire not to wobble after install, now that's a different story.
Pivot Team could have sharpied an S to the Les Get top tube sticker, too...
still the most entertaining team this year. Great youtube LSD series from BK and Jenna's takes ain't no stinkers either.
piston count doesn't make a difference in braking power, only piston area does (and it's relation to main cylinder area). btw, the discs aren't prototypes - they're already being sold and gome in some nice colourways.
and STILL no talk or reports on the LED lockout Loic is running, nor the fact that there are no races for 9 MONTHS for the stars of this awesome sport. C'mon man..
It must be epic having you own signature brakes, and tires on a custom tailored shred sled. Not to mention possessing the skills to justify it is just badass!
The only "Tech" on the entire page was the prototype Braking brakes. Every other photo falls under the category "pretty aesthetics for people who don't know which end of a screwdriver to hold" Please can we get back to having actual tech? I don't care how pretty someone elses paintjob is.
@Nopantsdougie: Then don't have the article. I'm so tired of all the fancyboys who have taken over this sport. No word of a lie I was speaking to some dude recently who told me he'd "customised every single component on his bike to get it set up exactly how he liked". Intruiged I had a look over it, and was like "I can't see any mods whatsoever, whats custom about it?" He replied "the paint job dude!!" I've never been more disappointed in a person in my life.
@gabiusmaximus: HAHA yeah for sure some people think just putting on non stock parts means "custom" but i think this is more of a scenes in the pits and early its usually all new tech but i still like the article every event reggardless. to each their own though!
So what am I missing here? Organic pads on a DH bike? For me its a night and day difference- metallic pads have so much more power and more importantly don't fade on long, steep descents.
I recently used some finned shimano organic pads in my rear brake after forgetting to order new pads. Was really impressed with them. They did fade a little riding really steep 3 minute tracks (on an enduro bike) but I guess I brake a lot more than the pros. I remember reading a brake test article a few years ago (think it was enduro mag) that said syndicate riders were using 1 sintered and 1 organic pad in each calliper to get the best of both worlds.
@onawalk: Hence the "what am I missing". Its obvious they go faster/further/stronger than us, but why would you want less braking power and more brake fade?
@hamncheez: IIRC organic pads have greater initial bite, especially at lower temps, than metallic pads. It could also just come down to rider preference.
@hamncheez: also, they brake way less and more precisely than us mortals. Less braking, less fade. The trade off is probably for improved feel and modulation for making those small braking adjustments and then throwing in a fresh set for the next day. Comparatively, I yank on the anchors whilst screaming, skidding and then hopefully not ending up on the floor and then still dragging my brakes whilst I walk most of the scary stuff- I'll go through a set of organic pads in a day at the bike park and most of a rear tire too as a result.
These are bicycles, there is essentially nothing that has anywhere near a high torque spec. In fact, most of the time I have my inch-lb torque wrench on hand because everything is so low.

Thank you :-)
So, they may lack some power, or they may not. It's hard to know just by looking.

Have a read …..

Will it work?
