Thailand Laos Trip: Post 1

Bicycle trip through northern Thailand and Laos.

Seven years ago my brothers James and Morgan missed a bus and walked 35 Km through mountainous Laos. For years they have been saying that it would have been so much better if they had bikes. This summer we finally started planning to cycle from Northern Thailand and into Laos.

Story inside,This week we arrived in Chiang Mai, Thailand with our bikes on the train with us.

We spent a day in Chiang Mai riding around and getting the bikes adjusted for the trip ahead.

The next morning before dawn we started north for a small town called Phrao. It was pretty flat for the first couple of hours and there was a lot of road traffic. The further we rode the steeper the road became and the better the scenery got. Mountains, small villages, rice fields ... something you only see in movies.

We stopped for lunch in the mountains at a waterfall and ended up spending the whole day there. We stopped to take some pictures and got a couple of decent ones. After walking up the waterfall James suggested that I try to ride down it. The rocks were like sand paper and it was easier to ride down the waterfall than it is to ride over the rocks and roots of the north shore.

We spent the night in a tent and then started out again before dawn. It was a pretty cold, sleepless night and it was pretty cold for the first dozen kilometers. But everything seems better on a bike.

Tomorrow will be another early morning and another day on my bike. Another perfect day ...

Keep riding,

Rob

Nice trip but totally the wrong bikes, clothing etc. to go on a long tour. I couldn't imagine touring on a hardtail mountain bike with an xtracycle and flat pedals...that would suck...

if you look at the pictures in my albums you can probably guess that I am not the touring type. there are many things I would probably do differently if I could. I think I would keep the hartail and the xtracycle though. some of the roads in northern laos are pretty bad and the xtracycle has been a great way to carry all of our stuff. and if budget was not an issue I could have done things differently, but I am working with what I have and I think it has been working quiet well ... and it is more of an adventure than a tour ... ha ha ha

i just took a long ride from bangkok to northern in past few weeks ago with kona stinky air. it's awesome and terrible pain. ha-ha
but for more adventure, it's possible with whatever bike you use.

When I saw the second photo I thought "something is wrong here", then I realized it was the helmet Smile

You guys are probably the only two person wearing a helmet Thailand, they don't were it even when they ride their crazy scooters.

Good for you guys.

Really interesting article! My uncle lives in Thailand and rides MTB and I have been there before myself so i liked this article. It is interesting to think how much great riding is out there that is virtually unknown!

I have been told it is pretty cheap to travel in those places. Anyone know if this is true or not? I mean how much would it be for a hotel room or a decent meal in Canadian dollars?
  • 1 0
it is super cheap to travel here, tonight our hotel is maybe 8 dollars canadian for three guys. food is also inexpensive and really good ...

Thats awesome. It is one of the things on my list for sure, but there is so much of my own country I havn't even seen yet that I can't justify going to those kind of places. My friend and I have a Trans-Canada bike trip planned for this comming spring, so maybe after that trip i'll be bitten by the travel bug and just keep going, who knows. Sounds like a lot of fun though, hope you guys are enjoying yourselves, take care.
