The 20 Top Pinkbike Comments of 2020

Jan 15, 2021
by James Smurthwaite
If you look hard enough, there's a lot of gold in the comments. Here are the 20 comments that got the most points in the past 12 months (upvotes minus downvotes).

It's getting a bit meta, even for us, to have three of the year's top comments be from the previous top comments article... Strange times.

I missed the start of the dick pound phase. Where did it come from? All I saw was just people scatter gunning it round the comments section with zero context
  • 4 0

Daniels Comment on the Grimm donut #9 post is amazing. Not sure how many folks outside the US realized how terribly sad-funny that Trump reference is. Not to be political but that's just some amazing satire. If you can imagine the voice in your head it just gets better.
  • 46 0
I'm not from the US and have no idea. Who is this referring to please?
  • 78 28
I never want to hear his f***** voice again. #traitor.
  • 60 3
@JoeRSB: Trump. Regardless of your opinion, the dude talks the same way all the time and it is hilarious. Simple, declarative statements, no explanation, followed by some sort of appeal about "everyone knows this" or "people always say"
  • 17 0
@texag: Never heard of it, @JoeRSB probably didn’t either. Is it some sort of insider joke?
  • 2 4
 @Mr-Gilsch @JoeRSB
I think it might be a South Park reference... Mr Hat or Mr Slave or... I wanna say, Buckle up Buckaroo.
Whip
  • 7 1
So good, I was reading it with Trump's voice in my head.
  • 6 1
@ehansen007 Agreed. That was spot on, and yes, sad, horrible funny. Frown
  • 4 1
@texag: @JoeRSB Also, part of the satire is that he's "always the greatest at everything", you know, just ask him! Wink
  • 3 1
@mybaben: FIGJAM- F I'm Great, Just Ask Me
  • 6 0
@texag: who? Never heard of him?
  • 13 1
@ehansen007 All of us know. The whole world followed the reality show called US of A the last few years. The part that surprised me is that it was in fact not a new season of the apprentice.
  • 2 1
Thanks for raising this. NOW I understand and it‘s really funny. For some you have to be a native speaker I guess. Didn‘t get the Dick Pound reference either, but apparently it‘s a dude‘s name and a funny word play insider joke?
  • 2 0
@molokel: let's say I googled 'Dick Pound'. I'm sure i could find Dick.
  • 7 0
@molokel: The dicktionary will give you the answers
  • 3 0
@Rig: I’m surprised Kanye didn’t make an appearance
  • 5 0
Brilliant post but I was also thinking its just a little too articulate and grammatically correct to be a bang on impersonation. What a time to be alive when someone who was able to become POTUS isn't smart enough for the PB comments section.
  • 2 0
I was pretty sad I missed it originally. Would have loved to upvote it. It deserves 1st place.
  • 4 0
@texag: wow cos we didn't have a clue hahaha @JoeRSB was using a little sarcasm in case y'all didn't get it Wink
  • 4 0
@dirtfun13: I find humour is the most difficult language for some to appreciate due to defectum comprehendere animo syndrome.

  • 3 0
@dirtfun13: I rarely pay attention to the news in my own country, figured there are folks out there who legitimately don't know.
  • 3 0
@SonofBovril: now, you say that, but Kanye did make a half-assed run at the presidency. Satire is dead, and our stupid reality killed it.
  • 104 8
I bet the 9 people that downvoted Dick Pound feel like dicks.
  • 26 1
That would be a Dick move.
  • 7 1
Funny thing is the 9 people that downvoted stepped away from their computers and are now in the bathroom...
  • 4 0
 Pounded that down arrow
  • 10 0
Found the 9 people that don't know Dick.
  • 2 3
Who doesn't feel like dick during lockdown on a Friday night?
  • 7 0
There’s 9 people on Pinkbike who don’t love Dick??? ThatS a lot higher than I thought it would be.
  • 1 0
 What happened to Charlie?
  • 112 37
That awkward moment when WAKI makes it twice... in comments from other people. I miss WAKI's goofy presence on this site.
  • 64 22
He made some people terribly uncomfortable. He will be missed.
  • 53 45
 No he is not.
  • 37 1
@suspended-flesh: Funny how divisive it is to even say he is missed
  • 21 12
Where did he dissappear? It was fun read to see him trigger ppl
  • 138 2
@GZMS: He now post under @ mike levy
  • 9 0
@azdog: I hope your comment gets lots of up votes, it could be a winner

I never was in discussion with him and I was not aware of his prominent status. But at the end, I downvoted any of his comments without reading. He was just so annoying.
  • 8 1
Has anyone Checked in on Waki? I bet his mental health is 100000% better now.
  • 1 0
 @unrooted: IG?
  • 1 4
@unrooted: He is probably trying to figure out who makes more waves... him or trump.
  • 19 5
oh puhleeze. He was an attention starved idiot. Leave it at that.
  • 2 4
@suspended-flesh: like a hole in the head
  • 3 2
@WoS: you weren’t the only one
  • 2 0
Exactly what I was thinkin! And laughing about...
  • 1 0
@suspended-flesh: How come he got booted? Did he say something over the line or more of a slow burn type deal?
  • 3 0
@sparkinson: I wasn't actually looking at PB much at that particular time (wasting more work time on 4X4 forums) but I think he kinda crossed some lines and probably got a warning and then just bailed. I remember his antics for years prior to that, however. It was a Covfefe year.

« I was at a shitty crustpunk bar once getting an after-work beer. One of those shitholes where the bartenders clearly hate you. So the bartender and I were ignoring one another when someone sits next to me and he immediately says, "no. get out." And the dude next to me says, "hey i'm not doing anything, i'm a paying customer." and the bartender reaches under the counter for a bat or something and says, "out. now." and the dude leaves, kind of yelling. And he was dressed in a punk uniform, I noticed Anyway, I asked what that was about and the bartender was like, "you didn't see his vest but it was all nazi shit. Iron crosses and stuff. You get to recognize them."

And i was like, ohok and he continues. "you have to nip it in the bud immediately. These guys come in and it's always a nice, polite one. And you serve them because you don't want to cause a scene. And then they become a regular and after awhile they bring a friend. And that dude is cool too. And then THEY bring friends and the friends bring friends and they stop being cool and then you realize, oh shit, this is a Nazi bar now. And it's too late because they're entrenched and if you try to kick them out, they cause a PROBLEM. So you have to shut them down. And i was like, 'oh damn.' and he said "yeah, you have to ignore their reasonable arguments because their end goal is to be terrible, awful people."

And then he went back to ignoring me. But I haven't forgotten that at all. »
  • 1 0
@Peskycoots: That's a very interesting story. I had no ide there were 'Nazi Bars'
  • 3 1
 @Peskycoots: I've heard this one. I'm not sure Waki's a Nazi.
  • 2 1

  • 3 0
@suspended-flesh: A platform for his objectively great work, hundreds of likes, all the dopamine he can eat, no hate, why the f*ck would he come back here?
  • 1 0
 @BenPea: Mmm... Dopamine.

  • 2 1
@rosemarywheel: the vest is a metaphor
  • 2 0
@unrooted: not sure what American political standpoints have to do with metaphors in Europe lad
  • 1 1
@Peskycoots: its an innate part of some peoples personality to make monsters of ,and dehumanise others ,you seek to score morality points by attacking someone you dont know and placing judgement on them, you have hinted that waki is a nazi ,its a term banded about far too easily, especially when he isnt here to debate you .I imagine you are a decent fellow but the internet is not the real world and brings the worst out in folk ,the mob with their digital rhetorical pitchforks.
  • 2 1
@unleash: Isn’t a sign of intelligence an ability to explain complex topics simply, rather than the other way round? Anyway, while you’re enjoying your word soup feel free to google « metaphor »
  • 1 1
@Peskycoots: If you find my language difficult to understand I'll moderate it in laymans terms ,your need to vilify others is a reflection on your own lack of self worth ,desperate to find a boogey man to rail against to bolster your need for heroism in an other wise vapid existence.
  • 1 1
@unleash: ahahahah f*cking hell mate surely by now at least one of your “friends” have pointed out to you what a vapid pseudo intellectual you are? Get ye to iamverysmart on Reddit, your spiritual home.
  • 1 2
@Peskycoots: what is reddit? I am by no means an intellectual, pseudo or otherwise but when dealing with midwits ,its not hard to appear as slightly supercilious .your incessant posting on the web wont bring you joy,go away reflect and look at yourself before shouting into the void at others.
  • 1 1
@unleash: “shouting into the void at others” absolute classic
  • 64 5

WAKI's name appears twice on a list of top comments on a site he's essentially been banned from...that's next level trolling sh!t right there.
  • 7 4
Why did he get banned? Didn’t he have his own article once?
  • 30 3
@jdendy: He walked away, fed up that only his friends Dunning and Kruger appreciated his genius.
  • 5 3
@jdendy: He wasn't banned. He saw the writing on the wall, and left voluntarily.
  • 5 2
@Unrealityshow: odd. I mean this is Pinkbike. The comments section is all out craziness

The site is much better without him. He was a racist, homophobic, bigoted stain on this website and was allowed to go on for too long. He was the compete opposite of everything we should be on this website, which is inclusive and welcoming of all users - regardless of their descent, religion, sexual orientation, anything.
  • 19 5
 @samfr1000:

Wow - check out your profile quote "Additional hobbies include down voting every WAKIdesigns comment I see."

I guess I missed that side of Waki, but I did see years of innovation. You clearly have a skin that is easy to get under.
  • 5 8
@samfr1000: You do realize much/most of that was trolling for entertainment, right?
  • 28 7
@samfr1000: Can’t make this up! “We should be inclusive “ Hence Waki should not be included, priceless.
  • 11 0
@SLBIKES: He came up with some great content, but also a pretty steady stream of the kind BS that alienates a lot of folks.
  • 12 15
@samfr1000: not sure why you’re being downvoted 100% agree he was beyond irritating
  • 14 2
@SLBIKES: hahaha "welcoming of all users"
"This site is much better off without him"
  • 17 3
@samfr1000: he was a hyperbolic satirist. His comments went over many peiples heads.
  • 13 3
@Garpur44: And who else do you find irritating? I find you irritating, does it mean you should be gone?
  • 6 2
@samfr1000: you clearly didn’t understand it then
  • 4 1
@samfr1000: shouldn’t that be, “regardless of descent?”
  • 5 5
@samfr1000: inclusive of all except waki ,does your inclusion only extend to people who agree with your world view ,what a boring oppressive world you must want.

Fourth reply to the top comment.

Just the tip of the iceberg.
  • 3 0
@samfr1000: Duly noted. I hadn't seen that comment. As much as I despise the CCP, his mocking comment was outside of the PB Guidelines for sure. I disagree that there was an iceberg below that, however. Whatever. Everyone needs to think and act for themselves.

It looks like he was trying to commit social media suicide:

Same thread: Waki: Ok, can someone at Pinkbike please pull the plug? I am almost 40 damn it. Gets creepy. I’m like Jennifer Aniston or Mike Levy pretending they are 25

@brianpark @sarahmoore - come on

Waki waki waki, waki waki. Waki!

I'm not sure whether to upvote or downvote this! Smile
  • 4 2
@DAN-ROCKS: HEY! Waki is the common era beetlejuice
  • 2 0
@Kamiizoo : Yeah, this is like the social committee suggesting a toga party at work. You need to be really sure that's what you want and are prepared for the consequences.

@brianpark , good pick, enough said.
  • 25 0
we should all upvote the crap out of each other on this article, so the top 20 of 21 all stem from the same thing.
  • 4 2
That does sound like bad karma. In no way should 2020 and 2021 be linked
  • 21 4
#13 is by far the most on-point comment. I don't usually LOL when reading comments, but when I saw that one...
