Voting Coming Soon: The 2020 Pinkbike Photo of the Year Contest is Here With $10,000 in Prizes

Feb 2, 2021
by Pinkbike Staff
There is $10,000 in cash on the line in the 2020 Photo of the Year Powered by Jenson USA, so get ready to nominate your favourite pictures.

What's at stake? $10,000 Cash

The 10th annual Pinkbike Photo of the Year Contest is coming fast. The winner will join Steve Shannon, John Wellburn, Toby Cowley, Sterling Lorence, Christoph Laue, Sean Lee, Robb Thompson, Richard Baybutt, and JB Liautard in the PB Photo of the Year Hall of Fame and they could walk away with some serious cash.

Think you have a banger? This is your chance to see how you stack up against the best mountain bike photographers in the world. Any images uploaded during 2020, or up until Friday, February 5, 2021, can be nominated. You can nominate up to three photos of your own, or from other photographers, for entry into the competition. Last year over 300,000 votes were cast until ultimately one image came out on top.

You have until Friday, February 5, 2021 at 9am PST to nominate your favourite shots.

How Does it Work?

All photos taken and uploaded to Pinkbike during 2020 and before Wednesday, January 27, 2021 that are uploaded to Pinkbike and nominated by users before February 5, 2021 are eligible. Each Pinkbike user can nominate up to 3 different photos into the contest (see how to nominate below). The judges will then spend several sleepless nights narrowing the nominated photos down to 32, after which we will open things up to the public. We will pit each photo randomly against another photo in a college basketball bracket-like showdown. At this point, users will vote on the match ups and the photo with the most votes will move onto the next round. So 32 photos will narrow down to 16, then 8, 4, 2 until there is a single photo deemed 2020 Pinkbike Photo of the Year.

The winner that is chosen by you, the readers, will receive a cheque thanks to Jenson USA, as well as the title of 2020 Pinkbike Photo of the Year.

Photos can be nominated by any user by clicking the 'Nominate this Photo' link. All nominated photos will then be viewed by the panel of judges and narrowed down to 32.

• Everyone is eligible except for judges
• Only one photo can be selected from each photographer into the final 32
• You must be the photographer who took the photo between January 1, 2020 and January 27, 2021 and then have uploaded it onto your personal Pinkbike account to be eligible
Nominations close, Friday, February 5, 2021 at 9am PST.

• Winner will receive $5,000
• Runner Up will receive $3,000
• Semi Finalists will each receive $1,000

I think EACH PHOTOGRAPHER SHOULD HAVE A LINK WHERE PEOPLE CAN SEND THEM MONEY (optional) - if they like the photographers work. Patreon? People can vote with their own cash. Bet the photographers would get financially rewarded way more this way.

@bigtim: but.... Nigeria is a barely functioning democracy, not a monarchy. Something smells fishy here....

This is a great idea! If I have the cash to spare I wouldn't mind tossing a few photographers a fiver for their efforts, regardless of who wins the contest here on PB. Maybe one of them can use the proceeds to buy a macro lens for my roost photoshoot.

@bigtim: to really sell it, you should have really changed your profile country to display the Nigerian flag.

Art should be free like a bird, the air, the warm summer wind on my buttox whilst I take an emergency trailside dump...

I think the 2020 contest is going to be pretty interesting given how much less travel happened last year. I hope this provides an opening for more work from local photographers to be recognized and appreciated. Looking forward to seeing the entries!

 Local roost only.

how well do mittens work for braking?...asking for a friend
  • 4 0
I have had mixed results. The power is amazing I have never stopped so fast. Just grabbing a handful of brake is the only way I stop now. The mittens will slide on the brake levers sometimes though. It also makes one finger braking a little tricky. I hope this helps

@Supergirl56: this is the one situation where shimano flappy padle shifters out perform all.
  • 1 0
@Riggbeck: Yeah, I think it works better on a road bike or gravel bike. ;D

@Supergirl56: not bad at firsts but then the fur, especially the tail, starts to get caught up in the rotor...

... Oh... Mittens. My bad.

Every year I find this a real struggle. Should I bitch about roost shots, or should I whinge about scenic shots where the bike is quite small? So much moaning, so little time...
  • 1 0
I thought those scenery ones were the roost?!
  • 2 1
how about a shot of a biker and climber in one? =X
  • 20 3
Probably due for another Roost win.

@dolores: I look forward to seeing what you have! Backflipping a road gap in Alaska with an unsuspecting grizzly beneath, perhaps?

i'm always confused, it has to be a 2020 photo or it can be an older photo uploaded in 2020?
  • 9 1
It has to be taken between January 1, 2020 and January 27, 2021 (today) to be eligible and uploaded and nominated before February 5, 2021.
  • 5 0
@sarahmoore: okay because this looks like, "Any images uploaded during 2020" can be any age as long as they're uploaded to pinkbike by today.
  • 2 0
@sarahmoore: it says that photos have to be uploaded before Jan 27 and voting stops Feb 5. Therefore you can not enter any photos now. What’s the real deal?

“All photos taken and uploaded to Pinkbike during 2020 and before Wednesday, January 27, 2021 that are uploaded to Pinkbike and nominated by users before February 5, 2021 are eligible”
  • 1 0
@sarahmoore: *nominated, not voted by feb 5
  • 3 0
@BrianColes: I've edited the language in the article. You just have to have taken the photo before January 27, 2021. You can upload + nominate up until February 5, 2021
  • 1 0
@sarahmoore: thanks. That makes more sense.

Why is there an ‘upload photo here’ link if the deadline for uploading has already passed. Why no heads up the deadline was the day before you posted this?
  • 4 0
They should change the voting format of judging 10 sets of two pics against each other -as people always say the best pic never wins with this format. Just put all 10 out and judge all ten against each other.

Been waiting for this to happen since we entered 2021, be very interesting to see what the photographers have come up with to reflect the weirdest year in our lifetimes. Would be perfect for showcasing the inventiveness and creativity that being stuck at home or local can produce. That and I need a new set of wallpapers and screensavers for the computer, none of my rides and adventures this year as there weren't really any!
  • 3 0
How do you guys find my entry. I just uploaded it to my PinkBike. How do you know what photo is being entered?

Someone has to nominate your photo. The button is on that specific photo’s page.

It takes me about 5 months to stop writing the previous year whenever I write a date. Give them a break, proof reading hurts.

@paulskibum: this is true...i just wanted to be sure that i didn't have to submit by last february

Yeah. But it like reading Better Homes & Garden. Full of advertisements and cheap stories. I miss Butcher Paper in Bike. Fricken made me laugh.

When an adjective becomes a noun.
  • 15 0
I had an interview where the interviewer asked me to describe myself using 3 adjectives. I replied "Lazy."
  • 1 0
Don't worry, sometimes adjectives get nouned. It is surprising, but the language is still understandable tup
  • 1 0
But they did update the title and article lol.
