Video: The Devil's Mountain

by Robert Loughlin

Robert Loughlin spends an afternoon on the trails of Teufelsberg (Devil’s Mountain), Berlin’s highest artificial hill.

Overlooking Berlin from the old NSA listening station

The view from the old listening station. Berlin is to the left and the Grunewald forest is to the right.

It was built in the Grunewald forest from the spoil and rubble of the Second World War then 20 years later the NSA built a listening station at the summit to listen in on the old East. The listening station has since been abandoned and the hill has been taken over by outdoor enthusiasts with MTB trails, climbing walls, long boarders and urban explorers all making an appearance.

Self Portrait - A 6am start 20 mile round trip on a DH bike with all my camera gear was worth it for this photo My aching legs might disagree though...

Rob throws some whips on the trail.

Very 90's vibe to all of this. But i guess much of Berlin exists in some weird time warped collision of various decades past.

I still expect Liz Hurley as Mrs. Kensington to show up and educate our stuck in the past rider:

"Well Robert, since you've been frozen there have been fabulous advances in the field of bike geometry"

Ha ha thanks, if riding an older bike grants me an audience with Liz Hurley then I'm fine with that!

There are actually a bunch of longer trails besides this down-the-hill-dirtjump-track and I think the majority of riders at Teufelsberg prefers them...and believe me their chainstais are short, their reach is long and their wheels aren't 26 inch any more either Wink
