The Field of Dreams - a haven for MTB, BMX and scooters (sorry!) alike, has popped up just outside of Chesterfield, on Mickley Lane in Stretton. Built by BikeTrack.org, it features both a pumptrack and tarmaced scooter track, with multiple line options to keep the tracks exciting and interesting.

Pump Track

We brought along Abbie Taylor, a womens BMX superstar, and MTB'ers Dave Camus & Jake Monk to shred the track in a battle of BMX vs MTB and boys vs girl. The variety of styles in which the track was ridden by the different disciplines showed through, with creative lines and ways of riding the features.

Pump Track

Trains were the order of the day with riders jumping in front and behind of others on the berms and hip jumps available on the track. The smooth tarmac berms played into the cornering skills of the MTBer's and the long straights of rollers favoured the BMX's.

Pump Track

Meanwhile on the scooter track, Sam Grayson, Marcus Knowles & Alex Parry were doing their thing, utilising the track's smooth berms and tarmaced pumps to their full potential. As well as being a great resource for advanced scooter riders, the track caters well for the younger kids who don't ride bikes (yet).

The facility is fantastic, and shows a great deal of ingenuity from Biketrack in the track design. The track was buzzing with the local kids who all seemed to be enjoying themselves. We will certainly be visiting again soon!

Grown man + scooter = GAY

it all looks "gay" to the outside world whether its a scooter, bmx, skateboard or mountain bike

just "push bikes",no matter how obsessed some of us become about our bike riding, and the bikes....

@bakewell I don't know if I have to point out but OLD English is called old English because its old, people don't use the word like that anymore!

So after all of my other comments you believe I'm a very serious person or someone who has a dry sense of humour. I understand it's hard to get dry humour over text but really?

I guess you can think of it like this.... We mtb'ers use our bikes and how good we are on them to prove our masculinity and happiness ... ..and the scooter riders use their little pink scooters with tasselled bar ends to prove their gayness. By gayness I obviously mean how happy they are to out !!!
  • 1 0
"The term was originally used to refer to feelings of being "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy". The term's use as a reference to homosexuality may date as early as the late 19th century, but its use gradually increased in the 20th century"

So what your saying is they have gotten more gay as time has gone by and they will continue to be more gay !!!

I was quite involved with getting the new-ish BMX track built in Derby. We also had a pumptrack made which I personally begged for. Quite a lot of the time it's full of kids on scooters, but you know what? I don't care. I think scooters are a pretty good way for kids to get into learning and doing tricks. I'm a coach and I've seen kids progress from scooters to BMXs and they have all the fundamental tricks down. I agree that they can smash the lips and I have to fix em but it's my job to encourage them. Be it on a mountain bike, a BMX or a scooter.
Wish I had one when I was kid Smile

well Im hopefully going Uni in Cumbria or Derby, so fingers crossed the MTB life up there is slightly better! I'm not gonna lie, there are quite a few skateparks, but I i'm terrible at Park!

The closest BMX / pump track is Herne bay which is quite close, but even closer to the coast and is constantly being buffeted by coastal!
Forever digging my own spots...

The riding in Cumbria is amazing. So many awesome all day epics to be had and a couple of good trail centers and downhill spots as well so you won't be disappointed if you go there! I've just moved away from there for uni and missing the place loads!

sick until scoters turned up I wish whack a scoter kid day was every day

I'm guessing the scooters are in there to show the multi use ability of this facility, to help more councils get behind building tracks like this, if they can show its not just for cyclists then all for the better
  • 1 0
Spot on buddy. A good example would be if they built a full on downhill track in a local park ( It's an example! ). Because it only had one function there's no way a local council would fund it. So, for the best for everyone, it has to have several purposes. And then if say maybe you don't own a BMX or MTB but a scooter then you too can use it. BMX, skateboarding, MTB or free running it's all about getting out and having fun with your mates and staying fit. Don't hate because it's a different discipline.
And I wish every where could have a top little pump track too.

I wonder how long it will be until some little git will crash and brake something and mummy and daddy sue, and the gov'll bulldoze the place.
  • 4 0
As always there will be a sign saying 'ride at your own risk'. The amount of kids that I've scraped off the track goes well into double figures. Broken arms, smashed teeth etc. Not one single 'mummy or daddy' has sued, because they can't. And, kids should be out getting on bikes or scooters. Falling off is a part of the game as you know.

These tracks have been constantly popping up all over the country and that's a great thing. And, with these kids we have future riders and very possibly future world champs.

After all aren't we (the UK) the best in the bike business?
  • 1 0
lucky you, we had one broken arm at a local spot (legal) and it got shut down! by Mummy and Daddy!
  • 1 0
Unfortunate mate. Was it an off road track, BMX track or pump track?
  • 1 0
Tee mate, can you get a decent pump track set up in the Kent area? cheers Wink

I was a part of cycle derby and at the time we had a hell of a lot of funding from the government. Our track cost cost close to £70,000 to rebuild from knocking down the old track. I begged them to build a pumptrack and I'm quite persuasive Smile Now we have about 3 or maybe 4 around the Derby area, always busy with riders. My advice would be to get together with other local riders and lobby your local council as these places are awesome for kids to hang out at and improve skills. Or a friendly farmer. But remember this: Like monkey-man said, someone bust an arm and their track was closed. You must put up 'ride at own risk' signs everywhere. YOu shouldn't be responsible for others injuries and get some 1st aid training. It's very handy!
Best of luck mate

The local council are terrible here, that being said, I'm sure Nigel Farage is dying for more good / any good press coverage, so if he does anything half-decent for the youth round here I might find a tiny bit of respect for him!

There's a bmx track in Derby, Alveston BMX park. A kid fell off there with no helmet on, just shorts and a t-shirt and messed his-self up (As we all did as kids down there.). And his Mum had an article in the regional paper saying it should be closed down! Rediculous!! Like teepea says, falling off is part of learning to ride. And if you choose to do it with out any gear on its gonna make a mess. It never stopped us. But thankfully the place remains open and is one of the best tracks!! Anyone into their BMX-ing should check it out.

Derby track was my office. The worst I've seen on the track was this. One evening's session and we've got kids everywhere; club kids and kids just riding. I'm watching over the 3rd straight where there was a table top after the berm. This fast kid with no lid on comes flying up to it and just smashes it. Over shoots by a long way and has the most height I've ever seen over it. I could see where it all went wrong while he's in the air and nosing it down to flat. His face hit the ground before his bike did. Smashed nose, missing teeth, broken jaw and cheek bone. While we're scraping him up his mate comes over with his stuff. A rucksack and a brand new TLD lid,
It was his choice, he wasn't a club rider I never saw him again on the track.
We have posted up signs saying wear a lid and ride at your own risk. It's up to them and not us if they do or not.
We all fall off, I have broken 14 bones in my 29 years of riding BMXs and MTB. No one is to blame but ourselves.
We learn by making mistakes.

Totally agree pal. I can't remember if that was the lad from the telegraph but he did mash his-self up pretty good. This mum was complaining that the council should close the place when a comp isn't on!! Bonkers. Half my life was spent racing and playing there. And it most certainly should not be closed at all. Except for repair and maintenance of course. And why would you NOT want to wear a D3??! They're so cool. At least he didn't scratch it!!
  • 2 0
I've never owned a TLD lid. Always wanted one though. When his mate rode up with his bag and a brand new lid I had a little fit of dispare. It was horrid but it was my job to pick him up. If we close these tracks except for races then where would anyone learn?
I believe that it doesn't matter if it's a scooter, BMX, downhill bike or a fridge you should be able to ride it and, most importantly, have fun on it. Isn't that the reason anyone takes up a sport or a pastime? Be it for fun or for medals. We do it for fun, mainly.

Nice edit MB. Looks like a quality track, I need to check it out. The scooter park is a great idea, too especially as it will help keep them off the dirt.
