Yeah Ryan! Great video! That trip to Puerto Rico was so much fun, glad you got back on the MTB haha! It's been awesome seeing you do so well for so long, always been an inspiration for me!! I know exactly what you mean with the family/career balance, it's so hard to leave the kids for trips, but also amazing to get to do this for a living. Good luck in NZ!

Extremely nice dude that slay's bicycles!
  • 32 1
Killer. This dude is genuine. That's all there is to it. He's also one of the only O.G.'s that made the transition. To me it made perfect sense. Guys get older. Knees are jacked. The larger bike is just easier on the body. The MTB industry was and still is trailing behind BMX as far as tricks and style go so if you've got it on the BMX already then why not transition to MTB as your body tells you to. I'm pushing 40 now. There's no way in hell I'd get back on a BMX right now. My back and knees just won't do it. I can barely handle smashing on my 24 any more. RyNy. You're a legend dude. Keep it up.

Well, he's still riding BMX pretty well, he seems to ride both bike as hard ! www.instagram.com/p/BRqZQLzggQA

"The MTB industry was and still is trailing behind BMX as far as tricks and style go"

I don't know, man. If we're talking about dirt jumping/slopestyle events, then mountain bikers have certainly caught up and possibly surpassed BMX.
  • 16 3
@spankthewan: Surpassed? Nope, not that i'm putting MTB down at all.
  • 11 8
 @spankthewan:

No way in hell man. MTB is going off. No doubt. Once it started it progressed as fast as anything in any sport I've ever seen. But there's no way it's surpassed. They go bigger in some cases. But BMX the style is better... think of it this way... the bike is WAY smaller so you can tweak everything that much harder and that much more inverted. And the tricks... mtb is still trailing. Every trick being done in MTB right now came from BMX and BMX still has more.

Hell... Nyquist nearly pulled a 900 in a pool. A dude did a 1080 recently. triple and quad back flips, etc.

Not hating on MTB either. I grew up riding bmx and have been on an mtb for a long long time. Hell... when I started jumping them people thought I was retarded. But it's just a fact... bmx is still in the lead. It's had nearly 40 years to figure it out.
  • 4 0
@jeremybmx42: Most definitely. I watched him smash on his BMX when they were shutting down the post office.

No one is doing both better right now and that's crazy considering the dudes pushing 40. Amazing. Dudes all time. That's all there is to it.
  • 10 3
@spankthewan: agreed!!!! Rogatkin and Antoine Bizet and many others that surpass tricks that are being done on BMX!!!! And @onemanarmy: MTB might be better for older guys in one way but the huge jumps they have in slopestyle courses now days are mega compared to anything done on a BMX bike!!!!!!

For one, look at Cam Zink! If a person does stuff on a bike like he's done retiring from some of those big jump competitions is good!!
And he's had a lot of broken bones!!!! Frown
If Nyquist ever gets some big heavy hits like some of the Pros have I wonder what he'll be saying then!!!!!?

But Nyquist will do good I hope to see more of Drew Benzanson in the slopestyle competitions this year!!!!!!

 @DigRenno:

Dude you ever crash on a vert ramp or x games street course

Think he's never slammed hard ?

All the kids now should get on there knees and pray the have a career that lasts as long and earn respect the Ryan has .

Dude is legit legend

@spankthewan: please find me a mtb rider that 'surpasses' this

www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cmhFk4DHL0

or any decent bmx trails rider really.
  • 6 0
@DigRenno: Someone has not seen enough BMX haha
  • 4 0
@onemanarmy: there's Dennis Mc Coy who turned 50 last year and pulled a 900 on the vert contest at X-games !
www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdquPvlXTmQ
  • 5 0
@jeremybmx42: Dennis is perhaps the best all round rider ever.
  • 3 2
@isolationismdivision: Rogatkin first landed the twister on a Mtb, bizet the oppo cashroll, Semenuk the Cork7 off a stepdown, not to mention all the flat drop flips variations. Mtb has surpassed bmx in terms of innovation
  • 1 0
@Mirko17: Who was the kid that pulled the front flip 1080 on a BMX?
  • 2 0
Can't compare between bmx and mtb they have pro's and con's
BMX is amazing if we look xgames big air the combo tricks really amazing
MTB/DJ/SS they are amazing also, huge jump combine with tricks
  • 2 0
@adirint: We'd be here all week haha
  • 1 0
@DigRenno: Benzanson: a product of a Red Bull slide-in into Crankworx... (no hate on him but he just didn't climb up the FMB rankings to qualify for the RB slopestyle at Whistler Crankworx)
  • 5 0
@Mirko17: You guys apparently don't follow BMX.

The cashroll started in BMX. It took MTB years to have 1 guy pull it off. Rogatkin landed a twister and like 3 months later godziek did a cleaner one on a bmx.

Cork 7... yeah that's a bmx trick too. Off a drop... Killer. But try doing it ramp to ramp over a gap... on concrete. Or doing a cork 7 straight into a cork 1080.

If you really think MTB has surpasses you don't follow bmx what so ever.
  • 1 0
@jeremybmx42: That dude's a legend. Goes so damned big. Hoffman is 45 and still going huge.
  • 1 0
@steezer: What are you talking about? Joyride is open qualifying. You have to meet several criteria. Dude busted his ass to qualify and was one of... what... 8 dudes to do a full pull on that course.

How quickly he was able to get to that level on an MTB is insane. He doesn't have the same tricks in his bag as a lot of the other guy but he's already doing way cleaner spins, bar spin combos and what not than nearly everyone else. His style is just there. It's effortless now. So clean.

He didn't just "slide" in.
  • 2 0
@adirint: I will say this... free r8ding and things like rampage... mtb definitely in a league of its own. So gnar. Guys like zink should have their balls bronzed on a museum after they pass.
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: I mean, in terms of innovation. In terms tricks I agree with you.
  • 1 0
 @Mirko17:

What do you mean by innovation? I'm not talking about the industry, materials, construction, technology.
  • 2 0
@onemanarmy: cashroll sure BMX and all those tricks sure whys all the good guys from bmx switching to mtb!!! Also instead of going over little jumps and cashrolls and stuff try land them with bigger wheels different set up bike and huge jumps and drops.... a whole different ball park!!!! Sure concrete is hard but the huge jumps and drops slopestyle and downhill bikes go on is not comparable to to that done on a bmx....

I'm not talking about Nitro Circus, I'm talking about overall.....
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: hahaha Wink you got a point! The way I view things go big or go home!!! Freeride and Slopestyle.. bmx might have the tricks and few guys have gone big in the past like Rogatkin, Nyquist, Godziek and Bezanson which are all now into mtb... but in general bmx go home, sorry not enough gnar gnar!!!!! Wink
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: still cant compare i think cam zink cant do the tricks combos backflip, bikeflip and tailwhip like zack warden do on xgames
youtu.be/HyefWDo3l6c
Bmx are bmx and mtb are mtb can't compare!
  • 1 0
@adirint: exactly agreed!!! For zack warden couldn't do the big 360 or a backflip off those wooden features and land it clean 70 something feet down like cam zink! Smile
  • 1 0
@DigRenno: yezza they have ability on they track of course they have own special skill on they track course, thats why bmx and mtb cant compare the same thing only the bicycle with two wheels on it But in different size
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: Isn't that a Diamond event in FMB therefore need to climb up through the ranks in order to be qualified/ invited to Diamond events- I've never heard of it to be open qualifying!
  • 1 1
@Mirko17: The day a 14 year old kid can drop under $500 on a mountain bike and go hit the biggest dirt jumps in their neighborhood all day long and again the next day and the next and the next on that same bike is the day that Mountain bikes will have surpassed BMX innovation. I've watched dirt poor pro-level kids on $350 bikes win contests. I love my mountain bikes, but I know it's not an available point of entry for many folks. Also - Nyquist is pure nice guy legend!

I liked this video because he was so genuinely honest about how he felt about everything in and outside his life; don't know about anyone else but man, felt like I should have had a virtual beer with this guy.

Too many positive encounters with Ryan to count. On the one hand, probably the best personality to have on the deck of a ramp while hanging out. On the other, unreal talent that is mind blowing. His section in Drop the Hammer is still amazing by today's every-millisecond vid-updates.

What's long been a rule: if Crandall thinks you're a good dude, you're a good dude.
  • 4 0
Ryan is seriously one of the nicest guys ever. He, and Mirra were my heroes back in my bmx days, and I later got the chance to ride with him a few times. He always has a great attitude, and is constantly helping others. Keep kicking ass Ryan, you're an instant inspiration to anyone lucky enough to come across your path.

 3:24 the tyre is backwards
  • 2 1
 I didn't see any tyre's
  • 3 2
@bighitfsr04: you probably saw "tire's", but then again, if your Websterite language skills were better, you'd see "tires". "Tyre" is the real spelling of "Tire".
  • 3 1
@bighitfsr04: I learnt from Tarzan, not the monkeys

@bighitfsr04: Many words are spelt differently around the world, tyre is one of em.

I think it's safe to say that he is one of everyone's favorite riders.
  • 4 1
I facepalmed when I saw the second 1997 x-games image... Cmon, the dude is a legend! You should sub-in a photo of the Joyride 360 drop he did last year, Along a pic of the 810 he did over the left hip at the top of the run, which in my opinion is about as difficult as the halfcab drop that Semenuk probably could have won with. The BMX crowd is rooting for this dude. He is the all around huslter and will bring fresh eyes to the MTB world!

I went to one summer Xgames ever. 1996 in Rhode Island. I have only one memory of that event and that was of Ryan Nyquist style on a BMX. He was the OG red head at Xgames before the flying tomato showed up.

This man represents everything that is great about bike riding. Not just bmx
  • 3 0
Nyquist is one of the nicest dudes on a bicycle you will ever meet. He signed my haro 15 years ago and I still got it. Cheers man congrats on doing what you love ! Hope to see you again

clicking on a 13:18 video can sometimes be questionable, but was enticed by this man talking with not very much riding footage the whole way through. great job @longnguyen. ryan you are not only a legend, but a regular super heartfelt dude at the same time. many props to your past as well as your future!

Face it, jumping mountain bikes has always been like the books with the really big print for old people and BMX has been like the small print. The big print books are just way longer now and more safe to read.
