The Top 5 Most Stylish Mountain Bikers of All Time (According to Pinkbike)

Aug 7, 2019
by Brian Park
Running away with it.

Last week we asked "Who is the most stylish mountain biker of all time?" and over 14K of you responded.

We're going to let the poll cruise on, but at this point I think we can call it. Apart from the huge winning margin, it's interesting that the whole group is pretty diverse in terms of riding styles and strengths. And they are without exception some of our favourite people to watch ride. So while style may be subjective, ya'll got it right.

1st Place: Brandon Semenuk - 5843 votes (40.47%)

Revel Co Inertia

2nd Place: Brendan Fairclough - 1101 votes (7.63%)

Views: 49,310    Faves: 405    Comments: 8

Brendog at revolution bike park while shooting deity. Jacob Gibbins Apect Media
Brendog is pretty amped on his line this year.

3rd Place: Josh Bryceland - 794 votes (5.50%)

Is 275 next As the last guy to win a World Cup on 26 the first to take the overall on 275 and seen here boosting on a 29er Ratboy is probably wondering what all the fuss is about.

The Ratboy section in the 50:01 Summer Waves mixtape flew under radar a little bit, but is an absolute hammer of a part. I've watched it so many times now. It's queued up above, don't miss it.

4th Place: Sam Blenkinsop - 518 votes (3.59%)

Views: 23,692    Faves: 196    Comments: 15

September 2017 Sam Blenkinsop turned things to 12 during later afternoon practice at World Champs in Cairns Australia
Sam replenishes his energy with a tumeric Latte he s very conscious about what he puts in.

5th Place: Andreu Lacondeguy - 411 votes (2.85%)*

Kade- Best whip and Andreu - Best Line

*The "other" category got 486 votes for various other people.
**Shoutout to @rockyj, who all the "other" votes were definitely for.

Bruni impersonating Blenki should be up there too
  • + 13
 Agree.
  • + 15
Bruni is damn stylish when then clock is ticking. He is like Minnar with aggression knob turned up a bit.
  • + 12
 @brianpark: where´s Cedric Gracia?
  • + 3
Anyone have a link to that video? I wanna watch that again haha
  • + 4
Blenki's race runs are more stylish than the video above. Didn't he manual through the rollers in Leogang?
  • + 2
@cebolla: WORD, remember his power wheelies back in the day.
  • + 1
@cebolla: Gracia is not so far away in this ranking, but I think some voters are mixing skills (tricks) vs style.
  • + 58
 NO VANDERHAM!?!? SJKLASKJDGNKQ3!!!!
  • + 34
He lives forever in @mikelevy 's #1 spot.
  • + 3
@brianpark: the only rider to ever use bottle cage on Fest series or what?
  • + 2
 Yeap, this is a travesty.
  • + 1
 Agree 100%!
  • + 33
I completely agree with this top 5, especially number one and two. But, before these guys generation Dave Cullinan was the most stylish MTBer and doing it on dogshit bikes.
  • + 11
Yeah it's pretty insane how stylish some people were back in the day with terrible bikes and nobody to emulate.
  • + 8
Cully! Ah yeah. His cross-ups and table-tops on the old KHS and Iron Horse bikes were s-w-e-e-t!
  • + 25
That is an undeniable fact. Cully and Tomac belong on any list claiming to rank “all-time” most stylish riders.

PS: I’m old
  • + 6
Cully was the man, superb tables!
  • + 3
Those tabletops with the sintesi were the shit. Hanebrink forks....
  • + 5
Hell yeah! Cully the master blaster!
I will never forget Metabief ‘93. Cully coming out of a muddy corner, few cranks, hitting the lip of a double, clipping out one side popping a huge one footer table, clipping back in before the landing, and carrying on with his run.... Brilliant.-
  • + 1
I voted for Cully & Voreis in the Other category
  • + 2
@a-mc: Of course they should be! What happens with the history of our sport? Just for respect or culture Tomac, Cullinam,... Should have a place in this list
  • + 1
@a-mc: I feel ya! (as I sit here icing my knee after a ride lol!)
  • + 30
Uhhhh, the "other" category was obviously for @rockyj and he should have been awarded 5th.
  • + 13
 #JusticeForRocky
  • + 12
 #rockyjgotrobbed
  • + 10
 I blew it. Sorry Rocky.
  • + 1
I think I missed something... any link?
  • + 21
These guys all deserve it but in my opinion Jasper Penton should have been somewhere on here. He has such a crazy unique and flowy/aggressive style that's a dream to watch.
  • + 9
Jasper is sick, but this was an All Time list
  • + 3
 this couldn't be more correct
  • + 2
@ctownrdr: Just because he is young to the sport doesn't mean he can't compete for all time. This was clearly a "right now" list, as many old school, and young guns have been left off that original list.
  • + 19
I agree with this. Josh Bryceland is so stylish. Crazy to watch him hitting jumps in real life. Jeff Kendall Weed is well worth checking out on youtube. He is so stylish and the nicest guy ever
  • + 4
...also Bryceland is a multi-time WC winner
  • + 19
Dude. Kurt Vories and Wade Simmons have been killing it for 30 years. Palmer changed the sport from Lycra to MX style in a way that has persisted to this day.
  • + 5
Palmer had style on and off the bike! Changed the face of mtb almost overnight.
  • + 3
Agree. Vories invented style and he's still pinning it.
  • + 2
I don't think the 'no lycra' style exists to this day. Every WC racer is in the tightest, stretchiest pants and jersey they can get away with.
  • + 2
@iamamodel: even the "denim-destroyer" wears somewhat tight jeans on the WC circuit...
  • + 1
I instantly thought of wade Simmons when it as in 'of all time'. Vories is rad too and Darren berrecloth. This seems to be just who is big on social media recently. I do agree with semenuk and andreu lacondeguy being up there.
  • + 12
It is impossible to argue with Semenuk. With this in mind, although there are guys going bigger after following Mitch Ropelato on Instagram I cannot understand that he did not slot into one of these positions. There is usually a weekly dose of "how'd-he-do-that?" on Mitch's Instagram
  • + 7
I couldn’t agree more, Mitch is an amazing rider. He makes everything look easy, he makes sick moves, like awkward transitions, huge hucks look gracious. Then there’s Brage Vestavik in the windswept and interesting category that Bryceland is leading here
  • + 2
@WAKIdesigns: That's what makes narrowing it down so impossibly tough. I love watching Brage Vestavik's IG videos along with Bernard Kerr's balls-to-wall riding and Tom Van Steenbergen.with his smooth and flowy style. So many stylish riders!
  • + 2
@lobohusky: Bas is way smoother and flowier than Tom, IMO.
  • + 2
@Lagr1980: Yeah, Tom's the got the tricks Bas has the flow
  • + 10
An 'all time' list that doesn't include any of the OGs LoL Some of us here are over 22. This should have been 'most stylish rider of last 10 years'

I still say Hans Rey, John Tomac, and Tinker Juarez. Where would MTB be without these legends?
  • + 7
I posted this above on another comment too. I followed Tinker around an XC course once back-in-the-day and he was other-worldy smooth. I don't think he touched the brakes once on the entire 16 mile lap. He never had to sprint out of a corner to get back up to speed cuz he just didn't slow down for any corners or obstacles in the first place. He just breezed through everything so smoothly and gracefully it's hard to describe. Casually effortless and incredibly stylish.
  • + 7
most of these voters never saw (or were even born when) Tomac flick his hardtail down a raw downhill track. roosting corners wiith no berms and blazing though rock gardens that had barely seen a bike before. yeah and he was xc and dh champ at the same time
  • + 3
@toddonbike: Nino is pretty damn stylish on the XC circuit today too. He throws a whip or table on almost every jump in the middle of WC races just to show off on a bike with a full-length seatpost and negative drop stem and he still wins.
  • + 1
@toddonbike: and he rode the tour de france. oh yeah, i forgot, pinkbike, don't mention the TDF...it's a rule or something now
  • + 1
@dthomp325: given how fast Tinker was going when he passed me the only time I have ever been on the same track as him (and he was about nine hours into a 24-hour solo effort), you must be pretty fast to have kept him in your sights for 16 miles. Kudos!
  • + 4
@dthomp325: Yeah it's neat that he does that but it looks goofy. That seatpost way up his butt, it just looks forced rather than stylish.
  • + 1
That's why I voted for Simmons. But would have voted for No Way Rey if he was on the list.
  • + 1
@toooldtodieyoung: Tinker was racing solo and I was on a 4-person team. You get enough breaks on a 4-person team that you can go almost full XC race speed, so my top-end XC race pace was apparently about the same as Tinker's base heart-rate solo-24 pace. I was probably at 170bpm while he was cruising at 130.
  • + 2
@toddonbike: With drop bars too sometimes!
  • + 14
My vote went to R. Dog.
  • + 8
I can not agree with the "All Time" thing. This list is from riders that are in the scene at 10 year max, what happend to the other 10 15 years before?
  • + 4
The most stylish dude on a MTB was Cully, but....technology has helped riders get more stylish.
  • + 2
@brajal: Can't upvote this enough! No love/respect for the pioneers. You know, the ones who got most of us riding back in the day.
  • + 2
@stikmanglaspell: what a boss he was. i ran my flat bars swept up like he did, i thought he was such a dude..
  • - 1
Agreed, these are all the kids. The adults are missing from the top five.
  • + 4
I followed Tinker through a 16 mile lap during a 24 hour race once back in the day. His solo pace was about the same as my 4-person team pace so I just stuck on his wheel the whole lap. I know this poll isn't for XC riders, but damn was he smooth. I don't think he touched the brakes once on the entire lap. It was unreal. He never had to sprint out of a corner to get back up to speed cuz he just didn't slow down for any corners or obstacles in the first place. He just breezed through everything so smoothly and gracefully it's hard to describe. Casually effortless and incredibly stylish.
  • + 1
@tobiusmaximum: yessss!! Same here on the bars! Watch my comment above!
  • + 9
Steve Romaniuk will forever be the most stylish rider in my eyes. Could watch that guy ride for days
  • + 3
That guy would style out the f*ckin’ biggest bucks. Romaniac indeed.
  • + 8
Can’t argue with them Top 3.

Who knew wasting so much energy by pedalling in the air was stylish?

Cedric Garcia should be Top 5 IMO
  • + 1
Can't upvote enough re wasted energy
  • + 3
Maybe he's just spinning the lactic acid out of his legs mid-run, in the most stylish way imaginable?
  • + 1
and then stretching his groin with those bowlegged tables, good call!
  • + 8
Pinkbike users doesn't seem to understand what style is...Lacondeguy??? Really???
  • + 22
He has a super moto style that's pretty sick. Definitely not a typical stylecat, but identifiable and rad. The commitment and extension on his tricks are undeniable.
  • + 6
Well... It's not our idea of style, but his balls-out, crazy, terrifying way of riding is indeed a style.
  • + 10
Best flat 3s in the game.
  • + 1
Yes - Lacondeguy. The choices are actually all solid even though they are all newschool. Modern riders and their equipment and commitment are just sicker than us old guys ever were.
  • + 11
Lacondeguy has some of the best style in the game! Like, the fifth best, scientifically.
  • + 5
 www.pinkbike.com/video/419057

3:14 - if that ain't style, I don't know what is.
  • + 5
@scott-townes: Gonna play devil's advocate on this one. I'll argue that R Dog has the best 3's going. Dumped or flat.
  • + 2
@mitchgulliver: If he ever tosses one on an 80ft jump looking just as steezy, I might entertain that notion.
  • + 1
@brianpark: Couldn't agree more. "different" definition of what we consider style nowadays, but his NWD segments were always something else. Really happy he got some recognition.
  • + 1
@scott-townes: edit: Best 80’ flat 3’s in the game.
  • + 3
We can't argue with the two firsts, especially semenuk. But for the others, there should be a warm spot, at least an honorable place for people such as bryn atkison which uses speed and corners to show his indeniable style. We can also talk about Bernard kerr which has a flow like no other, or even Cam zink in his tricks.
  • + 3
How the f*ck is it not Martin Söderström, hands down?

Brandon has the biggest tricks, clockwork like execution and a will of steel to land whatever he gets his sights on, but nobody can style it out even in the simplest maneuvers like Martin can.
  • + 1
i couldn't agree more, honestly I think he set the bar for slope style.
  • + 5
Cody Kelley is defiantly the most stylish rider IMO. Guy is super nice and very talented.
  • + 4
Blenki has an "enthusiastic" style but to place to 50 let alone top 5 surprised me.
Put Soderstrom there and the top 5 would be complete.
  • + 6
Most Stylish cornering: Bryn Atkinson, Jill Kintner and Connor Fearon.
  • + 3
I'm pretty sure you must have gotten down voted just out of habit by whoever saw your name... Watching Bryn or Connor corner is pure delight!
  • + 2
 With Kovarik mixing it too
  • + 1
nailed it with Jill, most stylish female rider bar nun
  • + 3
@sewer-rat: Kovarik is the grim reaper. Rips stuff apart. One of very few who not only fully deserve but absolutely require death metal for soundtracks to his videos.
  • + 2
@WAKIdesigns: I require death metal soundtrack when doing my morning business LoL
  • + 2
@joose: who's this nun that rides?
  • + 2
"Stylish" is certainly open to interpretation. While I don't disagree with the 5 named but when I first saw the title I immediately thought of Palmer and Missy as having their own styles both on and off the dirt. I know there are countless others as well. That said, I also expected to see Cody Kelley's name somewhere. I guess that's why it's an opinion poll.
  • + 4
 > immediately thought of Palmer and Missy as having their own styles both on and off the dirt.

The trailer-park style?
  • + 1
 > Palmer and Missy as having their own styles both on and off the dirt

Pretty sure the off the dirt performance negatively contributes to the on the bike style in these cases
  • + 4
So happy that Lacondeguay is in there. His natural energy and excitement shows in his steeze and style.
  • + 6
 Who got robbed?
  • + 21
 Norbs. Duh
  • + 8
Rheeder. He wasn't even on the list.
  • + 1
When the fans vote, no one gets robbed-usually. If this were Rampage or CWX judges, there would be theft. lol
  • + 5
Aggy...the amonut of steeze he has.
  • + 9
 Ryan Howard.
  • + 5
 Soderstrom
  • + 2
 Randy got robbed again
  • + 2
Remy. R-Dog. Aggy. So much style in the game now a days.
  • + 1
Paul Basagoitia got robbed, people seem to have forgotten how he came into the scene and won Crankworx.
  • + 6
 Söderström!
  • + 4
I was shocked he didn't place higher.
  • + 2
 So much steeze
  • + 5
 Chris Akrigg
  • + 1
 Yep
  • + 2
 Yep +1
  • + 2
thank you everyone, thank you very much
even though they still haven't given us the official 5th we wont stop fighting!
#justiceshallbeserved

keep shredding
  • + 4
Follow up poll: who of the five would you want to go for a beer with?
  • + 6
 Beer? Fairclough.
Anything else? Ratboy.
  • + 4
I was hoping for Rocky J to be in the top 5 Frown
  • + 4
Who else voted for Rocky J!!!
  • + 2
Miles Rockwell was steezy AF given the early gear. Probably one of my faves
  • + 2
well...the old skool has been forgotten I guess. Not sure how you have any list like this without @wadesimmons
  • + 2
Does appear to be a recency bias in these votes
  • + 2
Wade is 100% on my personal all time most stylish list.
  • + 2
Semenuk is running a racing drone inside his hub & that lily pad is just breathtaking. Helmet
  • + 2
Vincent Tupin. Have seen the shapes that man makes on a bike? Insane.
  • + 2
CAM McCAUL has always been at the top of my list...
  • + 2
top 5 is too short... I miss aaron chase, wayne goss and soderstrom
  • + 1
Most of you here are too young to remember or even heard of Cedric. He was doing it before all of these guys
  • + 1
The list needs work if it doesn't include any of Doerfling, Jeff Kendall-Weed, or Ryan Howard.
  • + 2
I'm sorry but I have to just completely fucking agree on Semenuk.
  • + 1
Josh’s DH part is really something special. Would love to see him on the big bike more often
  • + 1
Wonder if Semenuk did everything in 1 take without crashing, he looks really fluid and pinned.
  • + 2
My all time favorite is McGazza.
  • + 2
How wasn't Martin Söderström higher on the list?
  • + 1
ima go out on a limb and say if this was 99 Semenuk would still be it. That dude is an alien.
  • + 1
:/ I suppose if you're BMXing on a mountain bike you'll win... cause that's now considered stylish mountain biking.
  • + 1
Cedric, the Claw, Vanderham, Bourdo (riders rider according to the interviews in NWD)
  • + 1
I love me some Bourdo, but did you just propose him for a most stylish of all time list?
  • + 1
T-Sage of the TwoSix Stallions is the definition of pure style. No tricks, just mad steeze.
  • + 1
 Blast from the past.
  • + 3
 Darude Sandstorm
  • + 1
So, Semenuk got twice as many votes as all the other four added together (40% vs. 19%)

Sounds about right
  • + 1
I feel like Jasper was robbed on this one, are people confusing speed and production value with style?
  • + 1
Let's give it a few years and see how people feel then. He's definitely good at making shapes.
  • + 2
 @deityusa - most stylish edits
  • + 1
Notice not a lot of pedalling. Why all the gears? Why not a strider with foot pegs?
  • + 3
 KADE Edwards....
  • + 2
How has Hans Rey escaped this list?!
  • + 1
 Rémi Metailler, M.Soderstrom, r. Dog, E.Johanson, T. Lemoine, D. Hart,...
  • + 2
 What about Kade Edwards
  • + 1
Where's fabium, Cody Kelly, Mich ropelato?...
  • + 1
What about Kade Edwards he has to be on top
  • + 1
You guys are sleeping on Matt Roe. Bmx guy crossed over to MTB.
  • + 1
What about Bender? Definitely a unique style, unlike anyone before.
  • + 1
Go check out Jasper Penton on the gram to get some lessons in style.
  • + 1
Ok, but I don't think these mutants are humans Wink
  • + 1
 So many greats not mentioned
  • + 1
Kovarik, Ollie Wilkins, Greenland also has some mad style
  • + 0
This is all complete BS! Randy is the most stylish cyclist who ever lived, period.
  • + 2
 Jasper Penton?????
  • + 1
you should do like a pre 2000 vote
  • + 1

  • + 0
 What about Brett Rheeder
  • + 0
 Loosedog!!!
  • - 2
 No Bernard Kerr?
  • + 4
It was really stylish when he smashed the rental car like a 2 year old
  • + 1
@Tmackstab: That was really brave of him to do, and post... It was a mustang so that's pretty stylish...
  • + 2
 @dan23dan23: Fair point hahaha
