This is March in the Okanagan?

Mar 10, 2015

Is there anything more awesome than getting a surprise early start to the MTB season? Out of the blue, suddenly there are bone dry trails, awesome weather, and BBQ-ready evenings. It reminds me of being a little kid with my first mountain bike, just waiting for spring to happen to go enjoy the total freedom of the bike, being able to go out all day with your buddies and have an adventure. This spring feels exactly like that! Something about the unexpected opportunity to ride lets you forget about being an adult with responsibilities, and just get back to having fun. After struggling with an injury for a few years now, I’ve come to realize how lucky it is to be able to get out for even an hour of riding. Its exciting to be out with the boys again hitting jumps and ripping turns! I’ve never been more stoked to be out riding and shooting.

While there is still plenty of mud and snow to be found, many of the trails are already dry and in perfect shape. The last week of riding has been an amazing start after a long winter of valley cloud and fog which made biking a distant memory. The West Kelowna Fire Department is already out burning slash piles, which made for some unique photo-ops. Hope you enjoy this summary of my first week of the season!

A lot of lower in the valley pedal up ride down is open already.
However the high elevation DH stuff still needs time for access roads to dry out.
Already seen evidence of rednecks tearing up roads trying to check out the DH too early.
Have some patience with the soft ground/roads.
Don't be "that guy".

As cool at this, I am terrified for the summer. Its going to be the dust bowl all over again!

I think you're probably right... it doesn't bode well for the trails. I'm just enjoying it all I can now before the moon dust sets in... then escape to Revelstoke Smile

The ice crust in Rossland appears to be on the way out (especially with the forcasted temperatures for the next few weeks) but down the valley Trail is getting a load of action with the Bluff trail clear and in good shape. Good therapy for skiers bummed about their seasons passes being chalked up as donations to the ski hill this year.

You boys must've been feelin' the burn! One happy result of climate change - longer riding season in the interior.

Saw these fellas during their shoot, they were definitely having a blast. Didn't think I'd see it on PB just days later! Nice shots too. Ripping down the side of the mountain and suddenly hitting through those burn piles was fun, but I'm guessing it probably isn't easy on your camera gear. Great work

captured the Okanagan vibe pretty good. it's more of a downduro vibe these days than freeride/DH mayhem

how is Crawford? Heard it is still a little damp? What about Smith Creek?
  • 3 1
Stay away from Crawford for now. It still needs some time to firm up. There have already been a lot of mountain bikers (and fat bikers... AGGHHHH!) up there doing a lot of damage to the trails.

Smith Creek has some mud above the lookout with snow at the upper parts, so easy there.

Rose Valley is your best bet right now, or Knox Mountain. We need to give our more ridden trails time to dry otherwise it's gonna be TOTAL shit by May/June...

I agree with Mike there, Crawford holds a lot of moisture that comes down from farther up. Also, there is so much dog poo on the lower trails right now its pretty gross...

Boo to the dog walkers. Just flip the crap off the trail for crying out loud. Sweet to see the local trails on Pinkbike. Heading to Summerland for a couple laps of test of humanity tomorrow.

Have you ridden Giant's Head Mountain in Summerland? It's a pretty fun little trail. Not too long, and the climb to the top makes you hate your life at times, but the view from the very top is pretty amazing.

There was a local guy who did some trails work up there a few years ago, but when I was chatting with him once he said he was moving away, so I don't know if the work ever continued.
