Throwback Thursday: Josh Bryceland's 2014 World Championships Run in Hafjell, Norway - Video

THROWBACK THURSDAY
Taking the high line. Rat Boy s riding has been electric this season but one huck to flat on the finish line jump ended his chance of earning the rainbow stripes. The most recent update is as follows- Following his accident at the end of his run during the DHI Men Elite Finals this afternoon British downhiller Josh Bryceland has been ferried to hospital. He will pass a scan and will undergo surgery for metatarsal fracture or multiple fractures and dislocation

The 2014 World Championships in Hafjell, Norway, were as dramatic as any other – we saw crashes, close calls, mechanical failures and deserving victors. Gee Atherton secured his second ever rainbow stripes, while Neko Mullally dropped his chain near the start of his finals run, only to coast down to fourth place. Sam Hill finished the weekend with some seriously fast split times but couldn't carry that speed through the ferocious rock section, crashing out from almost-certain victory. And, on top of this, Josh Bryceland missed out on the win by a mere 0.4 seconds after spectacularly overjumping the finish line sender, breaking his foot and ankle in the process.

Josh was up heading into the finish but a broken left foot on the last jump left him unable to pedal to the line. He would finish just .4 back in 2nd.

Ratboy didn t quite expect to be in the hotseat like this.

Ratboy was here in spirit thanks to Kathy Sessler. Carted off to the hospital at the finish line one hell of a way to end a race. Most people wouldn t have continued riding after breaking their ankle the way Ratboy did.

The healing vibes are being sent out to Rat Boy from pits far and wide. Heal up quick Ratty we want to see you at your best next season.

The conversation with Minnaar while lying on the podium is class!
Josh: I didn't want to brake before that jump!
Greg: I Noticed
Josh: Did you brake?
Greg: I had a puncture
Josh: Ah, waank...
  • + 23
Classic Rat. But it wasn't his fault. That little jump at the bottom was stupid and dangerous for a high speed DH course. He should have won.
  • + 6
@slayerdegnar: He was flying though, most of the racers looked fast going in and didn't huck to flat.

I miss Ratboy at the world cups

2014 was the Year of the Rat for sure.

So is he officially off DH? I love the vids and know he can shake up the EWS circuit.
  • + 2
I miss Go Pro race Runs esp. from the Rat that year.

I was there helping out. Not that anyone gives a shit but here I am @2.46 shouting "come on Josh" go for it and giving it the old fist pump! I like to think I played a part Smile

I was once somewhere where there were pro riders......

www.youtube.com/watch?v=au4Eygn5NUM I was helping Josh too during his crash at Leogang 2010. I am the closest guy to him in yellow jacket with a Monster Energy cap Big Grin
  • + 22
When I grow older I'd like to be a hero like both of you
  • - 2
@RobyBenetin: I used to date Josh's physio. And Steve Pete's, and the Athertons (when they were GT)

(same chick for all of them)

What do I win?
  • + 3
I was also there , about 900 miles behind the tv camera !
  • + 6
@priest55: a creepy priest, who I presume is 55....? Tempting...
  • - 1
@priest55: "USED TO" .... why did you two broke up? Smile
Anyway, I used to date a girl to which Josh could not ger his eyes off when we were in Leogang for that WC Big Grin
  • + 1
@RobyBenetin: Long story my dude. She could fly down a rock garden though!
  • + 2
This is one of those “ Where were you “ when josh broke his foot things to tell your grandchildren !
  • - 1
@Matt115lamb: Bryce reminds me of Russel Brand. I bet my left ball that Ratty read his book
  • + 5
 @WAKIdesigns: I don't think he can read!
  • + 1
@jaame: audio books the best invention ever
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: I could just see josh on “ question time “ , Trying to legalise rights of way’n’weed Smile
  • + 1
@Matt115lamb: yes, he could be my hero. You Brits seem to be so close to legalisation. Please, carve the way for Europe! Then I will vote for Sweden and Poland to join UK, we'll be your colony. We can grow you tea, beans and pigs for bacon.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: I prefer dog bacon. Can you produce this? I can off Augustiner Bier!
  • + 1
@colincolin: if you can legalize weed in Germany we can grow you schweinhund! I heard it's meat is very delicate. Served in schmetterling salad
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: I'll have some Knäckebröd with it. Just let me note this down with my KUGELSCHREIBER.
  • + 1
 @WAKIdesigns: ‘Eccles cakes’
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: Do we really appear to be close to legalisation from Sweden??

It sure doesn't look like it from where I'm sitting. There doesn't appear to be much political will towards legalisation from either side. Tho I suppose it is kind of, unofficially, decriminalised - I think that the police generally don't want to waste their time with prosecuting possession.

Note there is a lot of equivocation in that sentence ;-)
  • + 1
@colincolin: you get knäckebröd. kötbullar och smörgasbord. We can throw in Halv-special too. The only question is whether you want training in fredagsmys or lönfredag. Can't have both. At least at the same time. The latter makes Polish people and perhaps even Russians go: we can drink and party too Sven, but that is fkd up. Hey hey, do not dress up in your most expensive clothes, gel your hair, only to go into a pub with afterwork and vomit into pasta salad, then sleep in night tram shitting all over your pants, only to be thrown out of it and sing Håkan Hellström to the trash can.

Now, please legalize weed and we have a deal.
  • + 1
 @WAKIdesigns: That escalated snabbt.
  • + 2
 @colincolin: blitztrollung
  • + 1
 @scott-townes: No you weren't.
  • + 1
@priest55: 'used to' are the key words
  • + 23
I pretty dissapointed you didnt post the video in this article??
  • + 0
 Yeah top marks!
  • + 19
Sorry to learn of your disappointment. We've now included the headcam footage from Josh's second-place run. Enjoy :-)
  • + 12
You view and read the articles on this site for free. And you could have opened YouTube and found ‘Bryceland Hafjell’ in less time than it took you to write and post that comment.
  • + 13
@rickcd: are you serious? What's the point of the article without that video?

Hey, do you want to smell my new aftershave? Here you go, it's green and it's in a bottle. Do you like it?

@jaame Clearly not as serious as you ???? You visit this site by choice. No one is forcing you to and you’re not paying for it. I come here because I enjoy the articles. Yes it isn’t perfect, yes Pink Bike make mistakes. But 95% of the comments I read are negative and having a moan. Do something else then mate. And you can stick your new aftershave up your arse ????????????
  • - 1
@jaame: it's called YouTube, check it out, it's pretty cool!
  • + 0
@rickcd: you sound like the type of dude who buys a car or bike without testing it first. Look at you getting all worked up over nothing lol... if your gonna go to effort of writing a article about his amazing run it makes alot of sense to put up the video of it.
  • - 2
@andydhteam: What?! The question marks we’re laughing emojis. Turns out the don’t work in the comments section.
  • + 13
Greg Minnaar is such a multi talented guy! He rides bikes yes. But even under these conditions he has the media talent to position the helmet such that the camera still records something relevant.
  • + 16
End of an era that had barely begun :,(
  • + 13
Josh was smashing it. So gutted!
  • + 22
I wonder what kind of pain meds he was using. Pick it, pack it, fire it up, come alooong, and take a hit from a booong.
I can see him picking up a sponsership from (now legal in U.S) cannabis company. Why not? Ratboy now rides for Sticky Greens, Super Bong Gunk Remover and Santa Cruz.....the actual town, not the bike company.
  • + 7
After he finished this race I realized what I was missing after many years away from DH/FR. Rat boy brought me back to downhilling and freeriding with fire and focus like I never had before. Thank you Ratty.
Now if he would only return to triple crowns and podiums ... enduro what!!?
  • + 9
No he didn't and no you didn't
  • + 5
Ratty was on fire the whole year, shit way to end it but he is now doing his thing and doing it proper, riding like a kid after the school siren, fuck yeah, that's what riding is all about.
  • + 6
He would have been World Cup Overall + World Championship winner that year had he not overlaunched it; and on 26" wheels too.
  • - 2
Because nobody was on big wheels
  • + 8
syndicate was actually on 27.5 that year. the bikes they were riding in 14 were test beds for the bikes released in 15.
  • + 3
@YoungGun13: Loic and company were also on 27.5 wheels as well that year.
  • + 1
@novajustin: they raced the 26" the half of 2014 and 27.5" then for rest. Josh been the last to win on 26" in leogang
  • + 1
@mtnbykr05: Thanks, I realize my mistake. I looked at production bikes quickly and only saw 26"
  • + 6

There is his race run. Couldn't figure out how to put a link in a comment
  • + 1
 Apparently it worked anyways
  • + 6
 salute to this great athlete.
  • + 5
No video of his run in the article, nice.
  • + 6
 Where’s the video lol
  • + 1
Probably the most iconic run since Palmer came 2nd in moto x kit. While he didn’t win this race, he won social media over a race programme and he won enjoying riding over competing. Big statement rat, however racing fuels the industry so let’s not get too consumed on this victory
  • + 1
Wow! This GoPro footage is truly breathtaking. The speed at which he was chewing up that course was amazing. This was a world championship winning run for sure by a big margin. I think he was something like 3 seconds up at the last split before the bridge? I can’t remember. You see the GoPro view. You see the bridge coming up and your hearts pounding. You find yourself talking to the screen saying “just scrub it, scrub it” cos you want so badly for the next few seconds to play out differently. That was the moment we all lost the Rat in WC DH. The current Syndicate is great, but we can never replace the Rat.
  • + 2
i get the vibe that youre lowkey trying to get him back with this post? little nudge perhaps? like, "hey remember that time WHEN YOU RACED WORLD CUPS AND STUFF?"
  • + 3
You can see his deformed foot in the first photo. One pedal stroke for victory! Just one, one footed pedal stroke
  • + 2
would have been epic if he had won with a broken foot! only 0.4 seconds
  • + 3
Full respect to the Syndicate team for helping the Rat out like they did, Peaty and Minnaar are true legends!
  • + 4
The jump was too small. What an epic run.
  • + 4
“....and you do all this dressed as a rat?....I dig it”.
  • + 1
He was on another level that season, that run looks like it was in fast forward. I miss Ratty in World Cups. At least he's still doing sweet edits and living life.
  • + 4
 Bring back Hafjell!
  • + 2
Agree! A track that ticks all the boxes in my opinion
  • + 1
Bring back Willingen! JK. It sucked.
  • + 3
Ratboy has to be one of the best riders on the planet
  • + 1
Blimey 4 years ago. Race career ending incident right there. Still he seems quite happy doing what he does. Which is nice.
  • + 1
it was his race to win for sure !! he had it in bag , but then it's racing !! what season he had !!!!!!
  • + 2
2014 world champion in my heart for sure!
  • + 2
Man, this guy really beast. Miss him so much.
  • + 1
Still can't watch that footage back. Remember how i felt watching it slip away.
  • + 1
That was a balls out masterful race run by the Rat... Fuck I was so gutted for him... Then that was it for him eh!
  • + 1
Cock n balls!!! Yeah PB for props to RB. Restored faith.
  • + 2
 Amazing, crazy speed!!!
