Throwback Thursday: Ryder Kasprick's Gap-O-Tron Tailwhip at Crankworx 2006

Jun 17, 2021
by James Smurthwaite

The Crankworx Whistler Slopestyle has always been the biggest showcase for progressive slopestyle riding in mountain biking. There have been a number of iconic moments that elevated the sport—from Timo gapping the whole course, to Paul Bas's breakout run, to Darren Berrecloth's 360 drop—but one moment that's always flown under the radar is Ryder Kasprick's Gap-o-tron tailwhip.

Just how mindblowing this was back in 2006 came up in a podcast we recorded earlier this week, so it makes for a perfect Throwback today.

Man that run was GANGSTER YO Also nice to see a slopestyle course with a lot of unique lines to choose from.

Agreed, I was just thinking about how sick this course looks. So much room for creative riding.

Oh the courses got creative alright, haha. Half the fun of Crankworxs used to be the build photos on PB and what nutty idea the builders came up with. This tailwhip was just as impactful on the sport as Darren's 360 drop... shivers.

Ryder was so ahead of his time, one of the first guys to send double whips on a full suspension that I ever saw, and this Crankworx tailwhip drop will forever be burned into memory. As a grom I used to wrap my half shell lids with Bicycle Rockers stickers to emulate his helmets haha. He deserves recognition for being a slope pioneer.

Ah Bicycle Rockers! Not heard them mentioned in a long time. I used to think they were THE coolest brand in biking.

agree. so underrated, and relatively unnoticed. growing up in ontario, kasprick was one of my heaviest inspirations in the early years alongside Berrecloth.

That Crankworx run was done on an Iron Horse MKIII cross country bike. Gangsta AF.

Hope you’re still out there sending it

The juxtaposition melts my brain. It's like some dude rolled out of Wal-Mart with a new Huffy and a fresh Grizzlies jersey, found his way to the bike park and is just slaying.

Is that Brad Jay greeting Ryder at the bottom? If so, guaranteed he just shouted "SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!"

The choice of song, btw, was good.

That'd still be a legit drop whip in today's competitions. And crazy to think this was just 5 years after Voreis threw some of the first whips on a mountain bike.

these runs and video parts seem like a such a distant time of the sport given how much the technology has changed. but at the same time, they're just as amazing as they were at the time they came out. That elemntal video part, very few people can throw down on raw features like that even with modern bikes. love these posts!

This was hands down the biggest moment in slope style history! Ryder is amazing.

I remember living in the UK and then showing an event highlight on a Sunday morning at something like 6am. The shouting from my buddy and me woke the rest of the house up, we were convinced that we had just seen it get as good as it ever would.

Steep short bikes are better. Geometry from 15 years ago was clearly superior.

I remember watching that from the bottom of the hill - god Im old!
What’s never shown is the way his shock crumpled and exploded like an empty beer can that had been stomped on - brutal landing

I can't stress how far ahead Ryder was than basically everyone at the time. He was Semenuk before Semenuk was Semenuk. Made stuff that no one else was doing look so easy and stylish.
