Throwback Thursday: The 12 Best Saves of 2020

Jan 14, 2021
by James Smurthwaite
Save of the Year isn't a category in our Pinkbike Awards articles but if there was, these would some of the nominees. What counts as a save? Basically anything that could have gone a lot worse than it did were it not for a combination of skill, reactions and luck from the rider. Not all of these are ridden out but all of them are certainly impressive bits of riding and/or improvisation.

Remi Thirion's Two Wheel World Champs Drift

Tom Van Steenbergen's Wild West Overshoot

Jacob O'Donoghue Price Nosing it in

Theo Galy's Tarzan Impression

Chris Grice getting Loose during a Race Run

Sam Reynolds' Ankles of Steel

Thibaut Daprela's Maribor Drift

Dawson Amann Riding out a Front Puncture

Camille Balanche's Top Tube Rodeo

Ben Cathro Getting Spicy on the Walk the Talk Track

Titouan’s Flat Land 360

Danny Mac Going Deep in Utah

Daprela for sliding fully sideways long enough to shout out "Putain de sa mere" loud enough for the pits to hear.

But this titouan has certainly nothing in common with Titouan Carod who rides wc xco! Come on PB!

I'm surprised by the fact that the PB audience acknowledged the presence of an e-mtb vid in the lot, let alone vote it best by a long shot... such progression, much wow Big Grin

You forgot the Adam Rojcek's one feet takeoff gap from muddy Leagang.

Yeah I remember this one! At that moment I said to myself : "Gosh he's dead!" but it ended up way better than what I thought

 Yep, it was nuts ????

At first, I didn't realize that Danny Mac ≠ Danny MacAskill and was very confused. Regardless, that was a "Danny stay on yer bike!" moment.

Good grief. Who were the BBC commentators in Camille's video? Were they drinking chamomile during a DH race?

 Big golf vibes.

I based my selection on highest injury factor, that’s why Van Steenbergen got my vote.

I had to give it to Jacob for almost hitting a full handstand before coming back to the seat.
  • 3 0
Had to vote for Carods as it was a save. Galy wasn't really a save but the most entertaining.

Is that dudes bare ass showing in Danny Mac's clip?

Can we have a weekly "Sketchy Sundays" feature dedicated to close saves like we have "Fail Fridays"?

I thought Theo's save was a rock climbing video at first glance.

some day in the not too distant future you're going to see Chris Grice up on the podiums all over the world. @ChrisGrice

Pretty sure the 360 isn't Titouan Carod.
  • 1 0
 Off course it is not.
Just a random kid riding a Ebike (and that my friend, is a clear indication that something is going wrong in this world)

Nice to see my boy Danny Mac ride out of that one!
  • 1 0
Dawsons front puncture is by far the gnarliest
  • 1 1
Chris Grice for keeping it pinned and composed, didn't flinch!!
