2010 Season Wrap-Up

Nov 30, 2010

It's cold and the nights are drawing in ever Faster. The end of the season seems like Years away now, but it was only really a month ago.

Here's a round-up of all of my videos from the Second half of the season here in the UK.

Video's inside!Following on from the last blog, documenting the first half of the Year (which can be found here), I went to Llangollen, for the third round of the British Downhill Series. I'd not been to Llangollen before, and had heard many people talk of its super steep gradient and technical track. Luckily for me and the rest of the riders it was Bone dry, making walking up and down it, and filming it a lot easier. It was also an open track, meaning it was easier to get longer shots. I took a few others up in the car with me, including Jacob Gibbins, Chaz Curry, from Juice Lubes, and my friend Dom McCrae. We had a right old laugh on the way up with Chaz and his hour long stories about wheels.

Llangollen is also a really nice place, and next year, the British National Champs are being held there, so if you can, I really recommend you get yourself there. We had many-a-discussion on the way back about Music choice, and Chaz suggested I used something a little old-school. So here it is!

From Llangollen, I went to Swansea, Wales, to film with my good friend Will Soffe. I had to produce a Documentary style video for College, so I decided to go and film Will and his friend Greg. I had a great day up there and I think I produced one of my best videos yet. The sun was shining and the tracks were in great shape. I got a distinction for this piece in my course, so all in all, a great day's work!

Then it was the big one. The British National Champs. This also happened to be a big journey too, 6 hours in a car with no traffic which turned into 10 hours in the car with traffic. But it was worth it. We got there at about 7 o'clock. Just enough time to walk the track before night fell. It was a pretty good track, some technical sections and some flat out sections. The middle was a bit like a big BMX track, but would get some awesome footage.

We woke up Saturday morning to Rain. Not great if you're a rider and even worse if you're a Videographer or Photographer. I got my bag on my camera and got up the hill, in a coach with none other than most of the Elites that were there, Rich Thomas, Jack Reading, Scott Mears, Danny Hart and more. The top of the track was an open section going through morse, a complete bitch to walk through, especially wearing shorts. It then started absolutely pissing down, which didn't help. Anyway, it then brightened up in the afternoon and gave for some awesome footage.

Sunday was pretty much the same, except rain all day this time. Qualifying and Finals came round and made for some great action. Some good shots were had and Steve Peat came down and took the win!

I had got a message from a few local lads saying they wanted videos made of them for a competition in a UK Biking Mag for a place on the Steve Peat Syndicate. We set a date and headed to a local spot called Triscombe. We filmed on a variety of the tracks, and I'm real happy with how they all came out. All three of the guys got through to the final so something must have been right!

This year the British National 4X champs were held in my home county of Devon, at a track about 45 minutes from me, so I wanted to go and film. It was a real different experience filming 4X. It felt weird, Dave & Toby from the BDS, and other media guys such as Andy Dunwoody and Jacob Gibbins were there, as well as Rich Thomas, enough people to make you feel like you were at a DH National, yet we were in front of a 1 minute track with jumps in the baking sun!
It was hard to know who to film and who was going to send it or not. But I think I got the hang of it quickly enough!

I then got a message over Facebook from a local Pinner named Adam Price. He asked me if I fancied doing some filming before he headed off to University. So I went to his local and had a chit chat and made this short little edit!

Then the last of the Nationals, in Caersws, mid Wales. I went up with my dad, and local riders Olly Hooper and Dom McCrae, who pretty much slept all the way up, then all weekend! It was freezing in the night, but the dry weather and good racing made up for it.

The BDS turned out to be a super good series and I thoroughly enjoyed being at the events. It was won by Marc Beaumont with a packed Elite field turning up at every event. Next year promises to be even better.

Some great vids, just one question.

What do the whistles mean? I kept hearing a whistle blow and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they mean.
Thanks

The whistles are there to show the riders they are at certain points on the track. Also to show there is a marshal at the point they are.

The whistles are to let the spectators know when a rider is coming down so they don't cross the track at the wrong moment. I guess they can also be used to warn riders if someone has crashed further down but I think the marshalls have a flag they can wave. Anyways, vids are great!!
