Track Walk: Lets Get Started - Les Gets World Cup DH 2019

Jul 10, 2019
by Ross Bell

While Crankworx has been coming to Les Gets for three years. The last time the World Cup circus rolled in was way back in 2004 for World Champs, and became mountain bike folklore. Peaty was going fastest, set for his elusive World Champs gold medal - right up until the final corner. It was a Frenchman, however, who came out on top that day with Fabian Barel taking the win, much to the joy of the home crowd.

Fast forward to 2019. Betting against the French ruling supreme on home soil once again would be unwise. Bruni is in the form of his life winning three out of four rounds this year with, Pierron taking the other with Vergier knocking on the door, as usual. Tracey Hannah still leads the women. Rachel Atherton sliced into her advantage pretty substantially last weekend, but the podium is destined to be a shuffle, as Hofmann and Cabirou are both ready to take their first wins.

It looks like we're in for another dusty one here, although it won't be anywhere close to the dust bowl of Andorra. The majority of the track follows the same route taken by Crankworx in the past. The tp is flat-out through grass corners in the ski piste in true French style. Things slow down as the trail tightens up and snakes below the chairlift before plunging into the woods, where racers will face a mix of rocks, roots and soft dirt. There are subtle taping differences from the Crankworx track. It's been slowed down slightly, with fresh off-cambers and tighter chicanes off the main line. On the whole, riders seem happy with what they've seen, which bodes well for another great weekend of racing.

there are some great micro brews in Oregon and Washington state......but Bud....OMG that is some of the worst ever i have tried and couldn't finish. that is not beer imo
  • + 8
You’re not wrong, but Canadian beer is trash. Howe Sound And Whistler Brewing are some of the worst beer I’ve ever had.
  • - 1
@Rucker10: what Howe sound is good

There's no difference between Bud and sex in a canoe. They're both fucking close to water.
  • + 1
 @BenPea: excellent !!!
  • + 1
@Rucker10: Whistler Brewing and Howe Sound are far from the best Whistler and Squamish have to offer though.
  • + 1
@steviej: That may be true. I am open to suggestions, both in beer and food. It's hard to escape the overly done up resort food in Whistler.
  • + 2
@Rucker10: Coast Mountain Brewing are Whistler based (unlike Whistler Brewing co) and make great beer. For food just avoid the stroll. Hunter Gather and Brickworks both have good beer and food.
  • + 1
@steviej: Thanks, those both look like they're right up my alley.

Man, I'm always on these articles and am absolutely amazed at the visual content Dave, Nathan, Ross and any of the other PinkBike photo contributors put out. Fantastic job ya'll. Ya'lls photos are top tier.

@AnimationNathan Totally agree. There's a few portraits in there that I thought 'man, if I was them I'd be buying that shot for the family album'. That one of Rachey. What a shot.

Thanks to that beer we have craft beer everywhere!

Budweiser is almost as awful as Heineken. Real beer amateurs like good beers and not that piss for teenagers.
  • + 2
@Franzzz: I think he's referring to the fact that Anheuser-Busch has been buying up craft breweries and increasing their distribution.

@jaredmh: Ah OK, sorry. I misunderstood that.

Nothing wrong with a cool crisp Bud. Ill take one over a piss tasting IPA any day.
  • + 5
@jaredmh: A up and coming awesome brewery got bought by Bud. My little hippie town got pissed. The locals went nuts, and basically boycotted it. It was ridiculous, even though 200 local employees got way better health insurance and a large raise. The beer hasn’t changed one bit.
Regardless of Bud or not, I have no idea how a pint of local craft beer can cost 6 bucks. It drives me crazy.
  • + 3
@slayersxc17: I was living in Bend, OR when 10Barrel got bought. You'd think the sky was falling down with how everyone just lost it. And I won't lie, I was worried about it as well. But in the end it was overall super positive, they sponsored more local events, and had vans parked at trailheads handing out beers to people after rides.

And while I never cared too much about most of their beers, I think I went through 10 cases of Pray for Snow last winter. They definitely got that one right.
  • + 6
@jaredmh: I thought he meant that Bud is so bad that craft breweries have thrived to fill the void... Smile
  • + 2
 @jaredmh: 2 nice beers > 4 shitty ones

 Wasn't Gee racing in 2004?

(In response to "Minnaar could be the only rider who was around last time the World Cup circus rolled into town.")
  • + 2
The last time the World Cup was in Les Gets was in 2002 (2004 was World Champs). Looked at the results on Roots and Rain, didn't find Minnaar's name anywhere, probably out with an injury is why. Mick Hannah is the only current racer I could find in the results/finals, 13th place. Gee was listed as DNQ, and apparently both Warner (16th) and Claudio (19th) got a top twenty.
