Such awful news and my absolute condolences to the fallen guys friends and family. Would it be a nice tribute to get everyone to ride out the final stage at a leisure pace all together with black arm bands as a mark of respect and solidarity for the guy?

RIP Will! You have been my best friend for longer than I can remember, you made me a better rider, a better person and after finally convincing you to start racing last year at Snowmass, you made me a better racer. I love you with every ounce of my body and I always WILL my friend. I know you are now ripping the most pristinely perfect, endless trail on Heaven dirt now with a huge smile on your face just like you did on every ride. The mtb community lost a most talented rider yesterday but the world lost an even greater person. You passed shredding on a mtb on your favorite trails in the world and I know you would have wanted it no other way my brother. Rip in peace for all eternity Will and I'll see you on the other side my friend. Godspeed Will Olson, I love you man!

Love to all his friends and family. I never met Will but heard stories about him through bigwhls how much he loved to ride and how talented he was. The news that a fellow rider died hits my soul hard.

Beautiful words, Mike, I cannot tell you how sorry I am for your loss. I'm honored to know you and am glad you and Will and I got to ride bikes together for a week.
  • 27 3
@bigwhls my best friend passed away last summer. He was a great guy, had an incredible sense of adventure and loved to ride his bike. His parents gave me his bike after the funeral and told me to ride it with intensity, and as much as I can.

I am incredibly sorry for your loss, as well as for the rest of his friends and family. I understand your situation quite well on a personal level.

I'll be praying for you.

that's the most heart-breaking thing ive read as a mountain biker so so sorry to read these words best wishes to you and RIP Will

My deepest condolences to you, @bigwhls (and anyone else who knew him). I've had two of my riding buddies pass in the last few years, but neither were as abrupt/sudden as this loss. Take care, and remember to celebrate him often.

 Sorry for your loss!!
  • 4 0
@bigwhls : I'm sorry for your loss, deeply. Losing a friends is one of the most difficult things we ever go through. It's often times more acute when it's a "brother in arms", so to speak. What you two have experienced together must be nothing short of wonderful and epic.

Keep your chin up! I'll keep you in my thoughts.
  • 1 0
So sorry for your lose and the lose of his other family and friends. I don't pray, but you all are in my thoughts. Much love, much respect. Help each other, love each other...We never know when won't be able to anymore.
  • 338 4
This is not the time to compare enduro to downhill, XC, bowling, etc. Anything. We lost a brother/sister today. And that sucks. My personal condolences to the family. May we all stick together as friends, as cyclists, AS PEOPLE. Stay strong.
  • 21 0
 Wise words my friend. RIP.
  • 172 1
Pretty heavy here in Crested Butte right now and rightly so. I didn't hear a single person complain about cancelling Stage 4 immediately after the rider went down. Thoughts were with him and not the stage that was cancelled while we were at the starting gate. Good to see solid perspective from competitive people. Proud of my fellow mountain bikers at that moment in this very difficult time.
  • 130 7
As sad as it is, you've reminded me of one of the reasons I love this sport. Someone could drop dead at the boston marathon or an Ironman tri and people would riot if you cancelled it. As horrible as it is that anyone needed to, I think our sport did it right.
  • 16 8
do you know any details of the accident? like how/what happened exactly? (not asking you to disclose the name of the rider) Those trails near cement creek are some of my favorites, maybe the best trails i've ever ridden... although i have not yet ridden the brush creek trail (i presume that's where the accident happened, since it was on stage 3)

what a bummer...

thanks in advance for any more news...

peter
  • 11 2
I don't think that will be disclosed, and I only imagine a few people (maximum) saw it happen.
In this situation I don't really want to know, it's a horrible thing to happen at any level of the sport and I hope it never gets repeated.
All my condolences
  • 35 30
@DrPete, While I appreciate the intent of your comment, I gotta take issue with it's presentation. The Boston Marathon comparison bothers me. The Boston Marathon had over 30,000 participants running a closed route, 26.2 miles long through the middle of one of the most traffic congested cities in the U.S., over 500,000 spectators. Cancelling an event of this proportion for a fatality is unrealistic in most cases. However, I do seem to remember the Boston Marathon being abruptly cancelled mid-race not too long ago, didn't see much rioting after that. I'm sorry if I come off as a dick, but as a local, the comparison kinda pissed me off.

That being said, my condolences to the family and friends of the fallen rider, sucks when we lose one.
  • 12 2
I think if something was to happen to me, I would want the race to go on. I can understand both sides, but I'm glad that they cancelled the race. RIP brother and condolences to his family and friends.
  • 13 0
I think this is good question. Maybe having It answered would prevent another fatalities.

Apologies for using the Boston Marathon, and you're right-it was cancelled for a terrorist attack. But if an individual runner dies, wouldn't you agree that it's not that big a deal and gets minimal attention or coverage?

guys, stop arguing, just take a moment to remember Will and give a prayer to his family. Ride In Peace man

@freeride-forever give your head a shake...
  • 2 1
I think your comment stating "people would riot if you cancelled it" is a touch insensitive buddy.
www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/bla-triathlon-death-dies-gwynedd--9406571
I was in this half ironman and this event was cancelled for the very same reason...to add to it all the pro winners donated all the winnings along with the organisers and sponsors to the guys charity. I see what your trying to say you just come across in the wrong context.
  • 1 1
@cat-funt Have you counted how many races went on despite a fatality?
  • 2 1
I apologize if it came across as insensitive but there are many events that don't cancel due to a fatality, at least here in the U.S. and I've always found it classless. That's all I was trying to say.
  • 1 0
 In all sports yeah.
  • 1 0
No need to apologise mate, I'm sure there are instances in ALL sports fields where good and bad has been done after the worst circumstances (including mtb) I just find your comment a bit out of order to say any other sport would riot while mtb did it right.

Saw a great quote to why we all ride and that is not to add days to our life but to add life to our days we are here. This person passed away to young is my guess but did it living the life he wanted. Ride in peace.

You did what you loved to do. Ride a cool bike thru the mountain meadows and forests. You were pushing hard, but often mountain bikers crash. We are terribly saddened to hear of your loss. Godspeed you on your way. As for us, I say we make it a rule. If we lose a brother this way, we stop the racing and start supporting and don't pick up a bike until he is in the ground. Show a little respect to the family and let them know we stopped to honor him. Cancel the race and move on. Humans are more important than points.

I am so sad at this moment for his family's loss and his good friends that thought very deeply of him. I actually no the man that has passed on and hung out with him and his best friend only three weeks ago. He was so passionate about racing and trying to better himself all the time on his races. My prayers go out to his family and girlfriend may his passion for mountain biking be passed on to the next life! We'll really miss you! God bless you my friend!

First Aid - take a look around at your regular riding group. who has it? basic CPR? no.....?

take a basic FA course plus CPR. advanced FA or Wilderness FA takes two weeks. too much time for most people.

impaled by a branch, head injury, snapped neck, broken limbs, heart attack, snake bit, you name it. can't figure it out....? maybe you shouldn't be out in the bush. get FA & CPR, please.
  • 4 0
I've been thinking about going on a course for a whole...now I'm going to get it booked
  • 2 0
I take the CPR training at work when it comes around for the very reason that I ride and race with others.
  • 1 0
I always keep my OFA up to date. I've saved/helped countless people in bike parks, kbr, on hikes, back country bike rides, ski touring, etc. You would be stupid not to at least have some first aid training while out in the woods, involved in sports, especially both.
  • 1 0
 Great advice!
  • 1 0
I'm one of the first aid, water rescue and safety instructors for the school I work at, I can not recommend enough that people get first aid and CPR training, epically if you work or even have children and if you do a sport where you can be miles away form help. Unfortunately I didn't work in this situation and my condolences to the family and friends. I would say a big thank you to the riders and support crew that did their hardest to help. Your efforts are respected.

Read on "bikemag" --> Organizers canceled round five of the Enduro World Series on Saturday in Crested Butte, Colorado, following the death of a competitor on Stage 3 during the second day of the three-day race.

According to a press release from the Crested Butte Police Department, William Dean Olson, 40, of Edwards, Colorado, crashed in the Gunnison National Forest at Trail 400 near the Block and Tackle trail, and died on the scene from his injuries.

The accident happened at 11:50 a.m. on Saturday.

Hats off to the riders that provided CPR. Although it was sadly unsuccessful in this case it underlines why all riders should get some basic first aid training - especially in races as far into the backcountry as this.
  • 12 3
Just can't imagine how'd I feel after providing CPR for 30 minutes just to learn it was unsuccesful
  • 10 1
After 10 minutes it's likely to be unsuccessful :/
  • 12 1
It's always likely to be unsuccessful, especially in trauma

Cpr can increase chances of survival for up to an hour, although chances do decrease. Glad there were people who could try help the best they could.
  • 1 0
@mnorris122 The likelihood of survival may statistically diminish over time but as makripper stated, it can prolong chances of survival even after 10-30 minutes have elapsed.
  • 8 0
It's heartbreaking that he/she died doing what they loved. And at a place where they were probably having the time of their life just hours or minutes ago.

A few weeks ago I had a close call with a tree that appeared out of nowhere. No helmet would have meant death or worse. I think most of us on here have had near-misses where we thought: "Holy S*". Days like these make you worry about the more important things in life than having the latest XTR this and Enve that. I hope the rider's family and friends will be ok.
  • 8 0
More informations from Fabien Barel on Facebook : We all love to ride head on fire next to the edge. We can imagine broken bones, big damages to our body and we do know it is part of the game.

Yesterday, one of us passed away hitting a tree at high speed. No-one could think about this type of situation doing what we love most. All our support is going to Will's family and friend as we know that no words do justice to our feelings

Condolences to the family and friends. Hope the trails continue on the other side. So sad to hear this - having been seriously injured at round 2 in Ireland it really brings home how close to the edge we are with this sport at times. What happens to one affects us all.
  • 3 0
RIP and condolences to the family. These are the guys that sacrifice it all, and they are truly the heroes of our sport. They make us all aspire to ride even slightly in their image. You can never forget what is on the line. I hope the victim went to a better place. I'd like to think so.
  • 9 6
So much fluff in here. I think someone needs to take a serious look at this and see what went wrong and why it took 30 minutes for medical staff to reach him. this is also not just for fun... its a competition and as such they have responsibilities to the competators to make sure they are safe and have our backs covered. .(even though we are a group that like our sports a little bit dangerous)

recently, here, they took a bunch of riders and threw them down our local dh courses with not a lot of protection and after having to perform feats of endurance. My heart goes out to this mans familly and hope they can find some peace.
  • 2 1
You'd be suprised how long it takes SAR to utilize rescue plans safely. It's unfortunate but it prevents more people from getting injured. 30 mins is a life time and it's unfortunate that the guy lost his life Frown

Like spokes on a wheel and links in a chain, there is something that connects us all. Cycling is a passionate hub for us and each one of us is connected. It's hard to know whether or not I have been on the same trails on the same day as Will, I never met him, but either way we've been on the same trails, a similar path, and have been affected by the core of the cycling community. Shred on.

Organizers canceled round five of the Enduro World Series on Saturday in Crested Butte, Colorado, following the death of a competitor on Stage 3 during the second day of the three-day race.

“Reportedly, two interval riders following the victim immediately began CPR and continued for approximately thirty minutes, with race personnel arriving at the scene and continuing CPR for a minimum of thirty minutes longer,” the press release said. “A paramedic, transported by Care Flight helicopter, arrived on scene and pronouced the rider deceased.”

With respect to the rider and his family, event organizers have canceled this round of the Enduro World Series. The race was part of the Big Mountain Enduro Series, which includes four Colorado races.

Enduro World Series officials issued this statement after the crash:

It is with the deepest regret that Big Mountain Enduro and the Enduro World Series announce that there was a serious accident during Stage 3, the first stage of Saturday’s race, resulting in the fatality of a competitor. The rider’s family has been informed and the competitor’s identity will be released in due course.

Emergency personnel immediately arrived at the scene. The competitor was treated on scene by medical personnel and transported to the nearest roadway. The Gunnison County medical examiner confirmed the fatality.

With respect for the rider and their family, this round of the Enduro World Series competition has been cancelled. Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the rider’s family.

There will be a press conference held upstairs at the Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce between 9 and 9.30 a.m. on Sunday.

that regrettable read this, my family and I send our condolences from the south of the world, a lot of love to the family and friends who are left without the rider that insurance was loving what he was doing until the end.
  • 1 0
To ride is to love. To love is to share. As bikers we all share the love for our sport and for those who love it like we do. So sorry to hear about this tragic accident. If you know this rider's friends please share our love with them. RIP Will!
  • 1 0
From velonews:"Asked if there were any indication what might have caused the crash, Ontiveros replied: “We’re presuming that maybe he clipped a pedal…. He was probably going about 20 to 25 mph. The section where he crashed had a chicane, around some trees. A rider came upon him laying face down. There was no indication of head injury, and no real damage to his bike. It appears to have been a blunt force trauma to the chest".

Unfortunately, I know too well how this can occur. I almost died from clipping a pedal five years ago doing something similar. The blunt force trauma to my chest broke many ribs other bones and punctured a lung. Fortunately only one of my lungs was damaged, but it was only by chance. I feel for Will's family and friends. It is hard to lose someone when they are doing something we consider healthy. I hope his passion for the sport and his love of riding will shine through more than this tragic accident.

Organizers canceled round five of the Enduro World Series on Saturday in Crested Butte, Colorado, following the death of a competitor on Stage 3 during the second day of the three-day race.

There will be a press conference held upstairs at the Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce between 9 and 9.30 a.m. on Sunday.
