Tragedy At Enduro World Series - Race Cancelled
We have just received official announcement that a rider died today during round five of the Enduro World Series in Crested Butte USA. Here is the official word from the organisers:

 | It is with the deepest regret that Big Mountain Enduro and the Enduro World Series announce that there was a serious accident during Stage 3, the first stage of Saturday's race, resulting in the fatality of a competitor. The rider's family has been informed and the competitor's identity will be released in due course. Emergency personnel immediately arrived at the scene. The competitor was treated on scene by medical personnel and transported to the nearest roadway. The Gunnison County medical examiner confirmed the fatality. With respect for the rider and their family, this round of the Enduro World Series competition has been cancelled. Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the rider's family. |

In this situation I don't really want to know, it's a horrible thing to happen at any level of the sport and I hope it never gets repeated.

I was in this half ironman and this event was cancelled for the very same reason...to add to it all the pro winners donated all the winnings along with the organisers and sponsors to the guys charity. I see what your trying to say you just come across in the wrong context.

take a basic FA course plus CPR. advanced FA or Wilderness FA takes two weeks. too much time for most people.

According to a press release from the Crested Butte Police Department, William Dean Olson, 40, of Edwards, Colorado, crashed in the Gunnison National Forest at Trail 400 near the Block and Tackle trail, and died on the scene from his injuries.
The accident happened at 11:50 a.m. on Saturday.
“Reportedly, two interval riders following the victim immediately began CPR and continued for approximately thirty minutes, with race personnel arriving at the scene and continuing CPR for a minimum of thirty minutes longer,” the press release said. “A paramedic, transported by Care Flight helicopter, arrived on scene and pronouced the rider deceased.”
A few weeks ago I had a close call with a tree that appeared out of nowhere. No helmet would have meant death or worse. I think most of us on here have had near-misses where we thought: "Holy S*". Days like these make you worry about the more important things in life than having the latest XTR this and Enve that. I hope the rider's family and friends will be ok.
Yesterday, one of us passed away hitting a tree at high speed. No-one could think about this type of situation doing what we love most. All our support is going to Will's family and friend as we know that no words do justice to our feelings
recently, here, they took a bunch of riders and threw them down our local dh courses with not a lot of protection and after having to perform feats of endurance. My heart goes out to this mans familly and hope they can find some peace.
We choose to do a dangerous sport for kicks. Unless you have the "bike passion" you just don't get it. Sometimes some of us pay the ultimate price. Spent their last day and passed doing what they loved.

Unfortunately, I know too well how this can occur. I almost died from clipping a pedal five years ago doing something similar. The blunt force trauma to my chest broke many ribs other bones and punctured a lung. Fortunately only one of my lungs was damaged, but it was only by chance. I feel for Will's family and friends. It is hard to lose someone when they are doing something we consider healthy. I hope his passion for the sport and his love of riding will shine through more than this tragic accident.

we do dangerous things, we have to cope whith risks that come along with it.
riding an ews race with an open face helmet and no back protection is simply accelerated darwinism.
of course i'm sorry for what happened but i think all these "pro-riders" play whit fire for such a long time, a tragedy had to happen one day or an other...
rip, but may this tragedy push uci to change the rules.
