Trailforks Feature: Wallrides from Around the World

On this wild ride of wallrides, we'll roll through the weird, the wonderful and the wonkiest of them all. If there's one feature that gets every mountain biker's attention, it's this one - and like a wooden skinny, you either love 'em or hate 'em.

bigquotesFeel the rhythm. Feel the rhyme. Get on up, its *wallride* time.

From the towering Redwood forests of Rotorua to the postcard mountain ranges of Italy, wallrides can be found on trails in every corner of the globe and each location offers its own twist on the classic feature that's pine-ing for you to ride it - so here's a few I've rounded up from Trailforks.

So, what makes wallrides so special?

At first glance, they can seem rather daunting. One moment you're cruising down a trail, completely focused, surrounded by lush forest, feeling at one with your bike and the track. But then, out of nowhere, emerges a wallride staring right at you in the shadows like a dare from the trail itself. You find yourself asking, 'Do I commit and go for it?'... 'Is the wood slick?' it's a vertical challenge that could easily send you tumbling at any moment.

The feeling of leaning into the wall, trusting yourself, and your bike to propel you forward, is like no other in mountain biking. For those willing to give it a go, or who've mastered the craft, wallrides offer an opportunity to play with gravity, using the wall's curve to generate speed and momentum, and like a bobsled going mach-10 round a corner or short-wall you'll most definitely 'feel the rhythm'.

Not all wallrides are woodrides, using natural terrain is another way to get vertical and play with gravity... heck.. you can even use them has a side hit to air off if you're willing!

Obviously it would be rude not to include this in the mix:

Michal Marosi turned on the afterburners during a 4X heat at JBC 4X Revelations 2013 to overtake 2 riders after his crash by going *above* and beyond on the last legs of the race. If this isn't the best comeback you've ever seen, then I don't know what to tell you, but it's easy to say the wallride was in his favor!

Ok - speaking of rude things, I'll end it here with this peach of a shot from the Director of Trailforks himself: Trevor May, aka MapMan

Peach of a feature
Buffalo Jump - Kicking Horse Bike Park, Canada - (or in this case, Buffalo Hump)

Did you know can filter your trail search by feature - here's the list for trails with wallrides - have a play around and make sure to add some trails to your next bike-it list adventure.

(Mostly wood berms with a couple) wallrides from around the world

Don’t know what kinda riding is going on in that last photo.

 @s100: Prison wall ride
  • 7 1
Yeah, most of those looked like banked turns to me. I'd say a true wall ride is verticle. Shark fins are fun though.

Of course they are FFS. If there isn't a wall handy how else are you gonna crank that big G turn? :-)

They missed the super fun double sequence on Snakes and Ladders in Williams Lake BC. Lots of great shots of that one online, look it up. Speed on the second turn is mandatory, otherwise you're gonna slide right down to the bottom (like on a wall).

@Chonky13: the Knoxville one on Devils is basically vertical not sure why they did a photo that makes it look sloped. The one on Deadwood at Ride Kanuga is basically vertical as well.

@tiffe: yeah, the devil’s racetrack wallride is way huger than that photo makes it seem
  • 2 0
@adamstraus: it’s big but the one at Chewacla is quite a bit bigger.

@advocate: might have to do a part 2! Big Grin

@Frank191: is there a newer bigger one? The one in the older video on YouTube is big but only about the same size as the Devils Racetrack. Also slightly angled whereas the Devils is about 90 degrees (straight up and down).
  • 1 0
@tiffe: the video must make it look different. It’s probably 2-3 feet taller and 50% longer. And same steepness.

Best overtake in any race, ever.

First time I’ve seen the whole video with the crash, even more impressive.

@kingbike2: The official footage of the race is much more impressive than the one in the article:

@ROOTminus1: Yeah, loved that one much better. The question always was back then, what is 4X racing really supposed to be like? It is mountainbiking after all so I liked seeing the woods and rocks sections in there too, not just the BMX jumps.

Walls are getting closer and closer to horizontal these days.

@RedBurn: The people down voting you are like the virtue signalers that kicked migrants out of Marthas Vinyard. They like the idea of being kind, but do not want migrants their backyard

Special shout out to the near verical wall ride on CBC that hasn’t really been rideable since 26” bikes but they still rebuilt it last year for history’s sake
  • 3 0
Add in to that the salvation wallride

There's this super short, easily ridden, not-very-famous race track in Scotland, and in fact there might be a wee race there soon, that if I remember correctly from my free broadcast viewing days just might have a wall ride included that I'm surprised didn't make the cut for the article.
  • 2 0
Hm, yeah, I might have to dig through my old (but equally yet deservedly un-free) Earthed dvds to see whether this wee wall ride might be featured in some Scottish race runs there. I'm not too surprised it isn't featured. Heck, I don't even know what you're talking about.

Brook Mac Donalds gap onto the wall ride at Leogang is one of my favourite clips ever

I remember that overtake. Still looks wild today.

Mt creek had the best one I’ve ever seen. It was huge, vertical, and you had a jump into it. Too bad they got rid of it like 10 years ago.
  • 2 0
The old Diablo features were/are wild. The Road to Nowhere Drop is a good example.
  • 1 0
@howejohn: that thing was gnarly. what was the name of the wooden drop out in the open? Dom's or something (someone's name I think?) Also gnarly.
  • 1 0
@howejohn: Diablo was definitely different, for sure. Can't get rid of the rocks though. That place is still great even if most of my favorite features are long gone.

Could we stop calling any berm made of wood a wallride?
  • 1 0
Yes please. I was so confused. Expected actual wall rides...
  • 1 1
It's a bit embarrassing how many of these are decidedly not wallrides
  • 3 0
Is there a generally accepted definition? If not, I propose that it has to be impossible to stand on it.
  • 2 0
Does anyone remember that wall ride in Kelowna, I can't remember the riding zone but everything was big step downs, step ups, gaps and the near vertical wall ride that was at least 30ft in height and turning radius that went for ever. You could hit it fast and low or fast and high as a kite, all made from 2x4's.
I have old school printed photos somewhere but it tops anything I have seen or ridden elsewhere.
Does anyone know the zone ?
Does the area still exist ?
It was out near the airport way, from memory.

 Prestige.....wallrides, wallrides, wallrides....
  • 1 0
ahaha I actually thought of that while writing this, might have to create a part 2 just for this.
  • 2 0
Last shot is on point. My friends would do this. I have a few pics to prove it.
  • 2 0
What? Your friends keep riding as you take a dump under a bridge? What else would you expect them to do?

That said, I'm very gullible and you seem like a very trustworthy person, I don't need your proof, thank you.

Another race highlight is the gap to wall ride at Leogang.

Ironically wallrides removed from Slopestyle... Speed and style... Rampage.... and XCO taking the lead now sor far in Wallrides ... Wallride is a must!

The Rotorua slopestyle course still has a wallride.

2006 4x world champs in Rotorua. The redbull wall ride was massive, I think Gracia overtook someone by riding above their heads. The tyre marks were there for years after
