Video: Mountain Bike Trials at the Cabo Arch

May 8, 2015
by Kenda Tire

Sometimes you just have to have a little bit of faith that everything will come into place. For 12x National Champion Trials Rider that came into focus when exploring the Cabo Arch in search of some epic riding. Follow this trials specialist as he ventures to Mexico to ride his mountain bike up and over the rocky terrain. Explore the Cortez Sea and the Arch at Lands End in this video showcasing what adventure travel is all about.

Stepping onto the boat for the first time was a bit intimidating, I had no idea if there would even be anything worth riding near the Arch” said Steidley.

Produced by Vision Aerial Media with some gorgeous scenery this edit is certainly worth a watch.

I thought I was the only one.

Looks...so...stilted. Spoiled by Danny and Chris who've moved the sport forward and managed to make trials riding flow. Major skills here, but not fun to watch. Sorry.
  • 7 8
Glad I'm not the only one that thought that
  • 5 4
I was totally expecting to see him ride the arch.....such disappoint.

Director: "Alright guys, we need to make a new trials bike video, what do we do?"

Intern: "Let's feature all the same riding that's found in all other videos around, but let's do it at a beach"

Director: "PERFECT"

Danny hasn't "moved the sport". This is trials, in its most pure state. Clearly you people don't follow trials, other then the random Pink bike video. If there were was a trials comp held with Danny competing, he would get his ass handed to him.

I wanted to ride trials....just didn't want to ride half a bike....! Jeff Lenosky RULES. NWD FO LIFE.
  • 3 0
I was hoping to see him ride the arch too.

Amazing riding! Trials is the purest form of bike control. BMX racers and downhill racers for example may say they have great bike control, but in the end no one has bike control like trials riders (except for maybe some pro street BMX riders).

Really enjoyed watching this video Smile

 amazing move at 3:33

great scenic and skill, when I look this video...my brain goes to Capo Testa, in Sardegna (sardinia) island, italy.
these granitic rocks are of course VERY grippy....but not forget that some sand over these ...make rocks simply slippery .
My skin hurts just at the remeber.
fortunatly salt water makes you recover quickly

 What?
  • 5 3
Great skills and good video but the discipline of trials has moved on so much that the riding in this video would have been cutting edge in the 80's. Sorry - but when a trials video gets posted and I see this I'm like "meh". Don't blame me...blame McCaskill et al.

THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE CABO!!!!!!!! If you haven't gone....do yourself a favor. GO!
  • 2 0
Couldn't agree more it's an awesome place and awesome locals
  • 1 0
 ...LAND'S END!!!
  • 3 1
"Water taxi for 10 dollars???" yeah its a big gringo trap unless you wonder away from well.... the cavo area. The locals in that area are awesome because they're trying to sell you something. Aside from that and the over developed state of the area, it is a really cool place.

It's an easy hike out to get out there if 10$ is too much.

Years back I parked my touring bike inside of a nearby all inclusive (for free).. Hiked out and spent the night on the beach. Such a beautiful place! I love Baja.

That's so tight. Was it a church or something set up just for touring riders? Also did you ever have to worry about crime in the more remote areas due to cartels? Apparently the day before we landed in Puerto del Vallarta, 15 cops were ambushed and killed in broad daylight from a new cartel that popped up in recent years. No wonder they charge so much on a cruise for internet.... btw the only time you or anyone should do a cruise is when its free. They nickle and dime the crap outta you and its like being suck on a club island for both old fat people and frat/sorority fellas that never grew outta that phase. So many pot bellies and tribal tattoos with shitty Oakley sunglasses. However security is lax and weed is dirt cheap for the quality it is. If its safe, your way of doing a tour would be amazing.

Dang it's Steidley. I ain't seen you since the Thor Wixom days, HOLLA!

Shit mang did you get that stem custom dorked just for you or what? O.o If you could do that shit on a whole bike rather than a goofed out half of one then you might be onto sump'm, like mah mangs Ryan Leech, J-Len & D-Mac. Say'n?
  • 3 1
With Ali Express you're 90% sure you're not getting the real bike you wanted, but a cheap Chinese rip-off that has a quality so bad it wouldn't even pass European standards.

Whatever you do, NEVER buy bikes or parts through that shady Chinese website.

If you want anything regarding Trails use www.tartybikes.co.uk I've been using them for years.

He'd be better off with a pogo stick or unicycle surely..........spent more time on one wheel!!! Chuck Norris could do that on a unicycle and a downhill machine
  • 4 1
those rocks are suuuuepr grippy. perfect for trials.
  • 3 1
Curious. What model Haro bike is that trials bike? I can't find it on their website.
  • 1 0
The frame just has Haro stickers. Haro doesn't make trials frames or bikes.

99% of people don't realize that though so Haro still utilizes Mike as a sponsored rider for their marketing.

So cool to watch and massive skill. At least I know I have the tires to do this, even though I couldn't do a fraction of this on the curb outside of my house. Great edit!

 love trial!

 What song is this?

At 2:06 sliding down the rock sideways... pretty cool! Nice location, awesome video.
  • 2 0
Oh I like that little move at 3:46. Off to practice that.
  • 2 1
Yeah cabo is so sweet. Went there for spring break, and didn't think about picking up my bike once!!!
  • 1 0
Refreshing to see an athlete actually drinking water in a video for once, no energy drink sponsors here haha
  • 1 1
Definitely scenic! I've been on that beach and paddled a kayak in those waters at the arch.
  • 2 1
I was just there a couple weeks ago as well. We hiked out to lover's beach instead of by water... highly recommend it to anyone. Those rocks are a lot like slick rock so you can scale up some steep stuff and climb to the top of all those cliffs (1:27 you can boulder hop all the way to the top). He was dropping some seriously big rocks and that sand is soft which I bet doesn't make it any easier to land. Very cool.
  • 3 2
He would be better on 27.5 wheels.
  • 2 1
I just saw the future of 27.5+.. Beach or desert trials.
  • 1 0
I've been there, from what I can remember about the trip....I had fun.
  • 2 1
 Wow no disk breaks.
  • 3 2
Most trials riders opt for Hydraulic V Brakes because they provide more leverage (thus more stopping power) with less of a delay. In all reality, the only reason that disk brakes are better on regular mountain bikes is that disks don't get wet and muddy like rims do.
  • 1 0
And because if they do heat up a lot on long descents, you don't risk damaging your rim's integrity by mashing the sidewall!
  • 3 1
Hydraulic v brakes? I gotta see those
  • 8 0
Duuuude... welcome to 10 years ago, maybe 15 years ago, wait maybe more... Magura hydraulic rim brakes, either neon yellow or blood red. I'm sure the modern versions are better but the tech is nothing new. I guess no one remembers seeing the Rock Shox/AMP Research disk brakes in magazines, lol! Or the twin-disk/3-pad Shimano 4-pots?

Trials is the bastard son of MTB that will never go away, and that's a very very very good thing! Wink I need to get me a trials bike

Loved the vid, great riding talent and good vibe from the song, but... but... but... I kept waiting to see him ride OVER the arch!
  • 2 0
No I get it. I have seen lots of hydraulic rim brakes, just not hydraulic V brakes. As far as I know V brakes are particular the way the brake cable connects both cantilevers and pulls them together. Duuuude!
  • 1 0
0:34 and 0:48, they look like standard Magura rim brakes. Nothing "V" about them. BUT they do make an RT-series of hydraulic road brakes that look a little funky!

Sorry I just had to duuuude you, because user name :p

Best thing about Hs33's is bleeding them with water. It's thinner than royal blood so makes the brake ridiculously snappy. Unfortunately I popped my crossover once, so got the spare out my car and used a river to bleed it!
  • 3 2
 Rim brake?
  • 3 2
 hydraulics baby!
  • 2 1
 Seriously? That's awesome!

Magura HS-33. One of the most powerful brakes out there. But the modulation is not as good as on disc brakes, that's why they are not being used often in the mountains. They go very quickly from not braking to completely blocking (much faster than any type of disc brake). That's why it's so popular amongst trials riders: they don't need modulation, just purely blocking and unblocking the wheels.
Combined with the brakebooster, extra soft pads, and the grinded rims (they actually use angle grinders on the sidewalls to create extra grip / brakepower), this is definitely the most brake (/blocking) power you can get on a bicycle.
  • 2 1
No need for boosters anymore! The frames now have them built in. Even a good vee brake set up can be just as good. Vee up front Hs33 on the rear I miss the days of monty tar spray

No Matt, discs can lock just as fast, discs provide way more power, everyone with any portion of a clue knows this & the reasons most of the world no longer use rim brakes is because a disc rim is lighter & stronger which is more important for wheels that actually roll & discs don't suffer from thermal & environmental effects like rim brakes do. Discs also allow for out of true wheels, provide much much longer pad life & braking doesn't damage the rim. Trials riders generally prefer rim brakes because they're lighter & there's no rotor to risk smacking & the braking mechanism is up higher away from threats from below.

Disc performance/power is definitely not an issue.
  • 1 0
Not smashing rotors is defenitely a true point aswell for trials.

But I'm not comparing 'normal' rim brakes to disc brakes. I'm comparing it to HS-33 with extra soft trials-specific brake pads and grinded rims.
Back in the days I used to ride trials, with this exact brake set up aswell. Of all the disc brakes I have ridden (including 4 piston DH brakes on 203mm discs) nothing has ever locked up as easily as this trials specific HS-33 set up.

This locking power (and thereby also lack of modularity) is the main reason why me and my riding buddies were riding HS-33. That was our top reason, but also sharing the top place indeed with not bending discs.

I have to be honest though that I have never ridden those trials specific disc brakes by Hope, guessing Hope has probably minimized the modulation on those aswell for extra locking power.

I spent my early mountain biking years concentrating on Trials (6 or 7 of them) - And Maguras were THE rear brake to run as you new you wouldn't loop out and land flat on your arse. Discs didn't come close to that reliability. However they were a revolution up front when it came to stoppies and ups using the front wheel, the added modulation up front was ace..

 3:50 was HEAVY

Lol. At first i thought you meant the endo pedal move.
