Troy Lee Releases Adidas Collab Race Kit

Adidas has been worn by everyone from Lionel Messi to 90s nu-metallers Korn, but recently it has been spotted on top mountain bike athletes too in the shape of Brendan Fairclough, Jack Moir and Mitch Ropelato. The reason is a limited edition collab between Troy Lee and the German sports brand that has resulted in what Troy Lee are calling, "the most technologically advanced" kit in mountain biking.

The range consists of race pants, shorts, long and short sleeved jerseys and a helmet. Most of the kit is available in black or light blue. Take a look at some highlights below:

Brendan Fairclough took tenth and the Kelly McGarry Spirit Award.

TLD/Adidas Ltd Edition Ultra MTB Pants

photo

The race pants seem to be the highlight of the range and have been tested in labs with Troy Lee's elite athletes. The pants are described as having an "athletic fit only" and max out at waist size 36. We expect this means they are also aero and skinny, as has become the second-saving fashion among the World Cup downhill elite.

The pants are 90% nylon, 10% spandex and feature HeiQ cooling, which is said to lower the temperature of the garment by 2.5°C/4.5°F. Troy Lee claims the pants have a low 290 gram fabric weight. The shorts use all the same technology as the pants except the drivetrain abrasion guard and come in with a fabric weight of 230 grams.

All this tech doesn't come cheap though, the Ultra pants come in at $235, nearly twice as much as the Sprint pants.
Features
Athletic Fit-Only available in sizes 28-36
90% Nylon / 10%Spandex
Main Fabric weight 260gr
Moisture wicking/Quick dry
Intelligent thermoregulation activated by high skin temperatures with HeiQ® Smart Temp Technological fabric
Laser cut ventilation holes
Inside right leg drivetrain protection with thermo-welded abrasion guard
Price $235 pants, $155 shorts

TLD/Adidas Ltd Edition Ultra Jersey

There's also a jersey in the range which is available in short or long sleeve versions. The jersey shares the silhouette and fabric of the Skyline but has the same HeiQ cooling and laser cut holes as the pants.

The jersey also has an Athletic Fit in every size from small to XL. The jersey is 3 grams lighter then the Skyline at a 137 gram fabric weight but t's also a bit more pricey to get your hands on as it costs $35 more than the respective long or short sleeved version of the Skyline.
Features
92% Poly / 8% Elastane
Fabric weight 137gr
Moisture wicking/Quick dry
Intelligent thermoregulation activated by high skin temperatures with HeiQ® Smart Temp Technological fabric
Price $90 long sleeve, $80 short sleeve

Fairclough finally ticked off the big girl after sundown during a rare gap in the gusting wind. It went without a hitch.

TLD A2 LE Adidas Team Helmet MIPS

Want to finish off the look? Troy Lee's A2 helmet gets an Adidas reskin too. It's exactly the same as the standard A2 but with a graphic update. It's also the same price at $179.

We reached out to Troy Lee for a few more details on the new range. Here's what Craig 'Stikman' Glaspell said:

How did the collaboration come about?

"About 10 years ago, the director of the Adidas Futures lab came by TLD, Al Van Noy. He is an avid cyclist and motocross enthusiast and was checking out the TLD showroom and museum here in Corona. He saw Troy sitting in his office sketching some helmet paint jobs and poked his head in, saying “Hey Troy, just wanted to say I am a big fan of your work, the brand, keep it up”. Troy, being the friendly cat he is, gave Al a thanks and asked him where he is from, what he does for a living, the usual small talk.

"Long story short, the 2 hit if off and have been friends ever since. Later on Adidas would come on board sponsoring the TLD MX team and we would do some colab collection in MX a couple times in the past-but it wasn’t until 3 years ago when we started working with the futures lab to reinvent the MX pant and later a DH/BMX Race pant, which is now launching as ULTRA. 100’s of hours of development, 3d motion tracking to determine key articulation areas, and new fabric developments raised even our own game."

Fairclough s still thinking about it... Tomorrow he ll probably get there and send one of the coolest features on the mountain.

What can Adidas bring to the mountain bike world?

"Well, Troy and I have visited Adidas futures lab in Portland and in Germany a few times during this project as well as some other projects we are working on and their extensive resources opens the door to everything, lighter and stronger materials, sustainability, and even safety/protective advancements that the bike industry has not seen yet. It’s not only about style, but they can help elevate function, performance and safety, we believe."

Which athletes were in the lab with Adidas and what specifically was learned there?

"Brendan Fairclough and Mitch Ropelato were instrumental in this Ultra project, as well as some other projects brewing. They have a keen sense of what a performance rider needs and wants, but also make it fun to develop these things, absolute kings to work with."

What does Athletic Fit-Only mean for most riders out there?

"Athletic fit or what we like call Precision Fit, it means its going to be closer to the skin, but the way the seams have been placed, the fabric used, will still allow freedom of movement in key articulation areas. Yes, a bit tighter than traditional sprint or trail gear, but I have not advised anyone to ‘size up’ in the TLD Adidas Ultra collection. I will finally add, this collection for 2019 will be extremely limited in availability, we are only doing one small production run, it is pinnacle product, made for racing or that rider looking for the best in class. It is also made from Bluesign Approved fabrics as we continue to embark on greater sustainability at TLD."

@thedee38: I couldn’t agree more. Both of my kids are competitive climbers so I climb more than I ride these days and the last few pairs of shoes we’ve bought aren’t holding nearly as well as they used to. With over 50 kids on their team the consensus is that the quality has definitely gone down. They’ve discontinued a bunch of really great shoes as well. Sad to see a great company’s rep being tarnished by corporate greed.
  • 9 1
@Bikethrasher: seems like a good match with TLD then, whose quality has gone downhill (har har) as well last couple of years..

Ahahhaha you beat me to it Smile The only question is which bike is the equivalent of 1998 M3 or 730 hahhhah.
  • 18 8
@thedee38: have you actually owned five tens before and after addidas took over? The quality is much better. The soles do not delaminate from the uppers anymore. The shoes have also lost a significant amount of weight. The Impact pros and freerider pros are great shoes. If you want sticky, it is never going to last very long. How long do Maxxis super tacky tires last?

@Bikethrasher: It's sad what they're trying to do to stealth rubber- It seems like they're trying to replace it because it has a strong brand association to 5.10. Boy do I miss having the 5.10 outlet nearby and getting 3 year long lasting Mocc's for $40 dollars.

RIP stealth rubber

@thedee38: phahahah quality? what quality? is that a company that makes shoes to ride in the wet and puts cardboard in the bottom? or one that uses webbing for the lace loops and gives you paracord laces to saw through them with? and dont even mention the soles falling off and splits appearing in a few short months! then they dont even have the balls to message you back when you take the time to email them about it all! if they never had that rubber on the bottom i would never ever buy another pair!

@hitmansam: hahahahaha, I think you have a lot of reading to do on human psychology. It is fascinating how lefties are into people, yet they repeatedly prove that they have no idea how we work as creatures. I suggest you to study evolutional psychology in depth, not just cooperative and reprocital mechanisms. Fear of incarcineration is one of the main drivers behind lowering crime rates, murder in particular (Reading Crime novels and Watching CIS helps too) There is off course diminishing returns to everything (like idea that Police witll solve everything or... belief in good will), but base level is assured by existence of police force and juridical system.

Oh BTW, Police is a form of humans coming together, organizing themselves and changing society. Who's clenching pearls...

How did the Dentist become the stereotype in the mountain bike world in the first place. Its always "must be a dentist" or "only the dentists would by that bike" etc. I'm sure dentists make a good living but they are hardly at the top of the pay scale relative to many other professions.
  • 1 0
@sino428: At a guess, Dentists have got cash but they're also in every town and city and have free time to go mountain biking.

Bankers and Management Consultants make more but they only work in big cities and they work 70 hours a week, you won't catch them at the trails.

Adidas owns 5.10 and they are/(maybe were by now, not sure) planning on phasing out the 5.10 name. This is a way to get their name into the mtb world before the 5.10 change. Other than Adidas owning 5.10 the rest is just rumor/speculation.

  • 12 3
@BetterRide: and 5.10 went to shit after Adidas bought them.

  • 8 2
@Boardlife69: I don't know, 5.10's are looking pretty fly nowadays...streamlined, better insoles, quality colorways etc. I suppose they aren't quite as 'burly' as they used to be, but that's pretty much everything nowadays...sacrificing durability for better weight and design.
  • 1 0
Only thing is that the new Adidas terrerx boots are actually great. Think they use continental for the rubber and sole is modeled off mtb tires. So strange for such a great boot and so much innovation to come from a brand that's otherwise killing off all the good stuff.

Of course I see nothing women specific here. same ole same ole... Really expensive. I have a Troy Lee helmet, five ten shoes both I like a lot but Im not buying an outrageously expensive pair of pants that are mens. Come back when you can at least put a womens jersey in the mix.
  • 6 0
@Flatpedalgirl We hear you. We built this as a small collection to start the relationship and see what the response is, some of the pieces were started off existing chassis, in our women's line, we are rebuilding the future womens line in a continuation of our commitment to the womens scene (have you seen our womens athlete and ambassador roster? I think its safe to say its the largest of any brand in BMX and MTB). But I will dig into it with our dealers and athletes for the next go round, see where we end up. Thanks for getting into a TLD helmet though, we appreciate it.

So does the HeiQ wear off? From there website it’s saying “100% cooling performance up to 40 washes” does this mean it’s like expensive Scotchgard and will just be a normal polyester/nylon kit after the coating is gone?
  • 1 0
This would be an excellent question for @troyleedesigns to clarify if possible, please.
  • 3 0
HeiQ as you noted is a performance cooling polymer that does last up to 40 washes, it is a treatment to the fabric and minimizing your washing in hot water, and drying in a dryer will help elevate the longevity. HeiQ is nothing like an 'expensive scotch guard', for starters Scotch guard contains ozone depleting PFOS's and more importantly they perform 2 different functions where as HeiQ is thermoregulating (keeps you cooler) but breathes, and scotch guard to the best of our knowledge completely blocks any breathability for vapor barrier.
  • 3 0
Thanks for the clarification! Will there be anyway to retreat the fabric after it eventually wears off? @troyleedesigns:
  • 1 0
@troyleedesigns: can the HeiQ coating be reapplied after wearing off, or once it’s gone, it’s gone? What sort of detergent would you recommend?

These are those sponsors everyone wants to have pay more money to the athletes. Cmon guys, put your money where your keyboard keys are and pony up Wink
  • 5 0
Believe one dude said,”if people stop bit*hing about mountain bike prices then athletes will get paid more.” Don’t think I’ve read a more idiotic comment here....but there is still time.

Unreal. Dude better buy that kit. Help support the cause.
  • 3 1
@Pisgah4life: lol. This forum is full of people who dont understand how supply and demand word. The 'extreme athlete' career path has never been a good one, never will be. All these guys are expendable with dozens of people waiting to fill each slot for less money potentially. Same thing as in the ski industry...broke your neck, bummer bro...good luck we got 30 dudes who want your slot and are willing to break theirs.
  • 2 0
So If Im buying overpriced stuff it ensures that the athlethes and not the company takes the money?
Brb Im buying lots of IPhones XMax for the chinese workers.
  • 2 0
@NotNamed: Its almost as if the athletes are completely expendable and doing it by choice or something.
  • 6 0
I can get adidas athletic wear at Ross for a ton less than that!
  • 1 0
My son wears $8 adidas baseball pants over g-form knee shin pads. and $35 clearance MX pants other times.
Fly bmx/DH (not heavy MX material) pants are under a hundred bucks.
We're not dentists.

 Alibaba special coming right up
  • 2 0
it looks so much like a footbal jersey, disgusting, I would say most of the bikers here in Czech hate footbal. I am really not getting the point of this collaboration, makes no sense. Show me one person who would prefer to wear Adi instead of TLD.
  • 4 1
Oh come on, your country is their prime demographic!!!
  • 1 1
@me2menow: I guess so as every noob here is wearing their sweatpants
  • 2 0
We shall see, but the initial sales on this and interest have been really exciting. And our athletes are digging it, but hey-not for everyone and thats ok!
  • 6 0
 Soooooo much money Eek
  • 5 0
Looks pretty cool but I don't like Adidas, so it's a no from me.
  • 11 1
Agreed. Unfortunately in my case of coming from Essex, the Adidas brand has serious Chav connotations. No offence to chavs, but I don’t particularly want to be branded as one.

Perhaps Adidas would have been better placed using their Five10 brand as the collaboration label
  • 2 3
@MonEddy: but if it does what you want it to surely the name on shouldn’t matter.
  • 5 6
@fatduke: nope ! like Nike Adidas is a team sport brand, if it's worn by football player and scumbags (same same) it has to remain as far as possible from me. If this takes off it will be a sad day for Gravity MTB. And clearly phasing out 5.10 meas I will also never buy any of theses shoes, time to find new shoes brand.
  • 3 0
 @MonEddy: what is chav?
  • 7 0
@brncr6: I had to look it up. They're anti-social youth dressed in sportswear. Looks like a new phase of kids who occupy lawns in Northern England.
  • 1 0
 @MonEddy:
Didn’t they do a TLD/Five Ten collaboration on shoes?
  • 4 0
 @brncr6: A waste of oxygen.
  • 2 1
 Just Don't It.
  • 3 0
 @derekbob:
Chavs have been around for a long time.
They're the reason I won't wear anything Nike or Adidas branded.
  • 3 0
 Yeah pretty tacky looking.
  • 2 0
@sam264: same hahaha they kinda f*cked it in the 90's
  • 1 0
 @makripper:
For sure. I mostly remember the really shitty kids at my school wearing it.
  • 4 0
@brncr6: It stands for Council Housed And Violent
So a select type of poor working class people in the UK who are happy to live off state benefits and generally just be a nuisance.
They also love wearing full tracksuits frrom sports brands.
  • 2 0
 @hypno-newt:
I never could figure out how they could afford a wardrobe full of branded tracksuits on the dole...
  • 2 0
 @sam264: sportsdirect innit bruv.
  • 1 0
@hypno-newt: in aus we call em LADS
  • 5 0
@lewiscraik: We are doing some Fiveten/Adidas shoe colab's, dropping soon!
  • 2 0
@sam264: my sentiments exactly. At least Kappa hasn’t invaded our beloved sport yet
  • 5 0
@troyleedesigns: sorry to say and apologies if this comes across as being disrespectful, but I kind of feel that this collaboration was a bit of a marketing/branding mistake. Adidas do have some amazing materials technology, I just can’t help but think that their brand image doesn’t really fit with mountain biking, give its social negative connotations. I’m not being snobbish, just realistic regarding the image the brand portrays here in the UK. Adidas internally Licensing their technology to five10 for a collaboration with you might have been a better brand move?
  • 2 0
 @MonEddy:
Plenty of other equally good/better brands out there now. With the exception of their helmets, TLD don't offer anything particularly special in my opinion. The quality of manufacture of their clothing seems to have taken a nosedive too.
  • 1 0
@sam264: interesting to hear. I haven’t brought any of their kit (aside from my forth Daytona helmet incarnation) recently but the TLD kit I brought 8 years ago is all still going strong (jerseys are looking a little scuffed on the shoulders and elbows). Shame if their quality has really as you say dropped
  • 1 0
 @MonEddy:
The kit I bought that long ago lasted a reasonable while (years). The more recent kit of theirs that I have purchased has lasted less than a season. Disappointing.
  • 5 0
Available next year in TK - Max..
  • 1 0
 Ross @ 90% off
  • 2 0
First the quality went down hill and now this. Fast house is looking pretty good right about now. Adidas owns 510 and doesn't put their logo on but troyl lee is all over this.
  • 1 0
@fruitsd79: was talking about Adidas style 510, but yes I see
  • 1 0
@fruitsd79: ah shit......i stand corrected. You win
  • 2 0
@flyr: There are no winners in this game. Frown I need a wide 12.5-13 size shoe and they are all made for skinny little feet.
  • 1 0
New camo Impacts are the best 5/10s i have owned, lasted far longer than the usual 6 month till unglued and ripped ones.
Had a pair of Terrex for a few years, the Stealth rubber seemed harder than 5/10s , but the soles are now shredded.
  • 3 0
This suck such a missed opportunity! I defiantly would have done the stripes running the length of the pant leg and sleeves to make a proper track suit
  • 1 0
Hate to say this but this kit looks much better than what all the adidas sponsored snowboarders are wearing. XXL 3 stripe track suits and rugby shirts. Their boots look dodgy too.

At least they’re getting paid.

Weird to see them come after Nike left
  • 1 0
Well I cant wear any of this shizzle, A: being a lifetime wearer of the "other brother's" stuff, namely Puma (Adidas and Puma were both thought up, and bought to life by two German brothers, the Dassler's. whom after a bit of a bust up, split there Dassler shoes company, and came up with these epic German brands. free history lesson there for ya there, if you didn't already know Smile ) and yes I'm a brand slut. meh, shoot me now!
And B: TLD stuff never seems to fit me right! which is annoying as hell, being the epitome of a man that I am..*cough!
  • 4 0
Athletic fit only? That's me out
  • 2 3
Second that...nice to see that marketing is trending to less then 20% of the mtb community. I guess with such a high price on athletic fit only they will make up the short fall.
  • 4 0
And looking at that picture of Moir they still can't seem to make pants long enough. They look like knickers on him! I guess you get what you pay for? Pants that don't fit.
  • 4 0
Korn.......... no love for RUN DMC?
  • 4 0
Protip: you don't need an $80 jersey or $150 pair of shorts to ride
  • 4 0
I would like to buy your product, but not to look like a billboard!
  • 4 0
"Ultra Jersey" is what I usually use to describe my Ex...
  • 3 0
So I have to pay twice as much to advertise for two different brands? Damn...
  • 1 0
Collabs...hahaha..I'm gonna get me some fresh Adidas gear to wear when I ride my Santa Cruz Chameleon collab from that hip hop company....Give me a break from this bullshit!!!
  • 1 0
I bet they still haven't taken taller riders into consideration with those pants and they would still come up well above my ankles! I wish a company would make a long legged race pant!
  • 1 0
@fruitsd79: Cheers, I'll check them out!
  • 1 0
I don't see why troy lee would need to affiliate with another brand. My troy lee kit looks pimp, it doesn't need more logo's.
  • 4 0
 Blyat!
  • 2 0
This stuff looks clean. But it’ll clean out the bank account. Can’t see the average racer copping this
  • 4 0
 No thanks X 1 million.
  • 3 0
 Looks like a football kit.
  • 2 0
and no pockets on the pants and shorts as far as i can see. big fail on TLD side IMO, stylewise to each his own.
  • 16 0
No need for pockets, you won't have any moneybleft after buying these.
  • 1 0
Built for racing, by our racers.
  • 2 0
@troyleedesigns: but than almost no one is gonna buy this kit!! i usually like your stuff, but at least 2 pockets for a phone and change is mandatory in riding gear.
  • 2 0
Now you can look like all those swaggggggy snowboarders wearing track pants & no helmet in the terrain park
  • 3 0
 Perfect for scumbags ...TLD S-series
  • 3 0
 F@cking ugly ass tarhole blue
  • 3 0
Shouldn't there be a Gold Rope graphic or something around the neck?
  • 2 0
Pretty sure I could find an almost identical kit on the soccer clearance rack at Big 5 for less than $10...
  • 2 0
How about some matching shell toe DH shoes in widths that actually fit men’s feet???
  • 2 0
One kit for bike riding and soccer please? Big Grin

Also, when will we FINALLY see the Flat and SPD version of Adilette?
  • 3 0
I don't want to look like a pickle wolf, so I'll pass.
  • 3 0
 Moto pants, $100 or less.
  • 2 0
Sorry, but the Adidas logo just doesn’t work for mountain biking. Much to linear and uniform.
  • 1 0
I like my logos like I like my viewpoints: poorly constructed and inconsistent
  • 4 1
That's a nice piece of kit
  • 4 0
Whew! we knew there was one of you in here! haha
  • 1 0
@troyleedesigns: TBH, I cant afford to wear anything that says TLD. But I've always liked the Adidas stripes. Combining it with a cycling kit makes it much more appealing, that's for sure!
  • 1 0
Damn that looks good, but size 36 max rules my chunky butt out. 36 Troy lee is like a 34 for every other brand I've found. Great set of gear.
  • 1 0
 Fly racing has us covered!
  • 2 0
Adidas, thats a hard pass. Good think Oakley is coming out with new mountain bike gear this year.
  • 1 0
I've always liked Adidas Originals stuff, dont wear it so much now except on my feet. However, this is all types of wrong, there are some thing that just shouldn't mix.
  • 2 1
Just slapping a logo on a generic piece of Adidas kit passes as a collab nowadays?
C'mon TLD, you guys can do much better then that!
  • 5 0
We developed the ULTRA line together with Adidas, this is product not previously available from them, or us. Using their labs, our designers and athletes came to the table with a mission of making and all new take on race wear. It was purpose built for Bike and MX (we offer a whole separate MX ULTRA line, that already sold out) from TLD design and Adidas.
  • 2 0
@troyleedesigns: Thanks for your reply, this is beyond awesome for a 90's kid who always coveted TLD gear. But maybe it's that 90's kid that was expecting something a bit more TLD-like, perhaps a more outlandish colorway. I like the collab with Five-Ten, but this one just seems a bit bland in my opinion. Cheers from Belgium!
  • 1 0
Child's play... wake me up when there's a Kappa edition and a gold chain that has an airbag system in it like a motorbike racing suit.
  • 2 0
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Make the Superstar classics for flat pedal riding!!!!!! I'll buy 10 pairs right now!!!
  • 3 0
I like it. Like the clean black look.
  • 3 0
Athletic fit only? What about those of us with dad bods?
  • 1 2
I'm pretty sure I figured out what is wrong with millennials...
So, a few years ago we decided it wasn't cool to pick on weirdos, yes? Basically, we got rid of bullies!
Now we have all these weirdos walking around like it's ok to be weird!!!
I say, bring the bullies back, to beat the "weird" out of the"weirdos"!!!
  • 1 0
Difficulties finding this in Canada, tld website only ships to the USA? Need to match my adidas goggles, don't think I can actually ride without this kit.
  • 1 0
Anyone know how the waist fit is on these, compared to the Ruckus shorts? I run a 34, and use about 1/2 of the waist adjusters. Would I go a size up? Or should they fit?
  • 1 0
TLD should do a commercial with Run DMC...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNua1lFDuDI
  • 2 0
what is a short??? i always ride shorts...is this something new???

If Eugene Hutz mountain biked, he'd wear this.
