Adidas has been worn by everyone from Lionel Messi to 90s nu-metallers Korn, but recently it has been spotted on top mountain bike athletes too in the shape of Brendan Fairclough, Jack Moir and Mitch Ropelato. The reason is a limited edition collab between Troy Lee and the German sports brand that has resulted in what Troy Lee are calling, "the most technologically advanced" kit in mountain biking.
The range consists of race pants, shorts, long and short sleeved jerseys and a helmet. Most of the kit is available in black or light blue. Take a look at some highlights below:
TLD/Adidas Ltd Edition Ultra MTB PantsThe race pants seem to be the highlight of the range and have been tested in labs with Troy Lee's elite athletes. The pants are described as having an "athletic fit only" and max out at waist size 36. We expect this means they are also aero and skinny, as has become the second-saving fashion among the World Cup downhill elite.
The pants are 90% nylon, 10% spandex and feature HeiQ cooling, which is said to lower the temperature of the garment by 2.5°C/4.5°F. Troy Lee claims the pants have a low 290 gram fabric weight. The shorts use all the same technology as the pants except the drivetrain abrasion guard and come in with a fabric weight of 230 grams.
All this tech doesn't come cheap though, the Ultra pants come in at $235, nearly twice as much as the Sprint pants.

We reached out to Troy Lee for a few more details on the new range. Here's what Craig 'Stikman' Glaspell said:
How did the collaboration come about?
"About 10 years ago, the director of the Adidas Futures lab came by TLD, Al Van Noy. He is an avid cyclist and motocross enthusiast and was checking out the TLD showroom and museum here in Corona. He saw Troy sitting in his office sketching some helmet paint jobs and poked his head in, saying “Hey Troy, just wanted to say I am a big fan of your work, the brand, keep it up”. Troy, being the friendly cat he is, gave Al a thanks and asked him where he is from, what he does for a living, the usual small talk.
"Long story short, the 2 hit if off and have been friends ever since. Later on Adidas would come on board sponsoring the TLD MX team and we would do some colab collection in MX a couple times in the past-but it wasn’t until 3 years ago when we started working with the futures lab to reinvent the MX pant and later a DH/BMX Race pant, which is now launching as ULTRA. 100’s of hours of development, 3d motion tracking to determine key articulation areas, and new fabric developments raised even our own game."
What can Adidas bring to the mountain bike world?
"Well, Troy and I have visited Adidas futures lab in Portland and in Germany a few times during this project as well as some other projects we are working on and their extensive resources opens the door to everything, lighter and stronger materials, sustainability, and even safety/protective advancements that the bike industry has not seen yet. It’s not only about style, but they can help elevate function, performance and safety, we believe."
Which athletes were in the lab with Adidas and what specifically was learned there?
"Brendan Fairclough and Mitch Ropelato were instrumental in this Ultra project, as well as some other projects brewing. They have a keen sense of what a performance rider needs and wants, but also make it fun to develop these things, absolute kings to work with."
What does Athletic Fit-Only mean for most riders out there?
"Athletic fit or what we like call Precision Fit, it means its going to be closer to the skin, but the way the seams have been placed, the fabric used, will still allow freedom of movement in key articulation areas. Yes, a bit tighter than traditional sprint or trail gear, but I have not advised anyone to ‘size up’ in the TLD Adidas Ultra collection. I will finally add, this collection for 2019 will be extremely limited in availability, we are only doing one small production run, it is pinnacle product, made for racing or that rider looking for the best in class. It is also made from Bluesign Approved fabrics as we continue to embark on greater sustainability at TLD."

“She ain’t messin with no bermdigga”... schralp!
Bankers and Management Consultants make more but they only work in big cities and they work 70 hours a week, you won't catch them at the trails.
Shell toes were my default trainers for years, until I started riding around town more and switched to Five Tens.
A fair for Five Ten shell toes would be awesome!

A fool and their money.

you're welcome
Unreal. Dude better buy that kit. Help support the cause.
Brb Im buying lots of IPhones XMax for the chinese workers.
Fly bmx/DH (not heavy MX material) pants are under a hundred bucks.
We're not dentists.
Perhaps Adidas would have been better placed using their Five10 brand as the collaboration label
Didn’t they do a TLD/Five Ten collaboration on shoes?
Chavs have been around for a long time.
They're the reason I won't wear anything Nike or Adidas branded.
For sure. I mostly remember the really shitty kids at my school wearing it.
So a select type of poor working class people in the UK who are happy to live off state benefits and generally just be a nuisance.
They also love wearing full tracksuits frrom sports brands.
I never could figure out how they could afford a wardrobe full of branded tracksuits on the dole...
Plenty of other equally good/better brands out there now. With the exception of their helmets, TLD don't offer anything particularly special in my opinion. The quality of manufacture of their clothing seems to have taken a nosedive too.
The kit I bought that long ago lasted a reasonable while (years). The more recent kit of theirs that I have purchased has lasted less than a season. Disappointing.

Had a pair of Terrex for a few years, the Stealth rubber seemed harder than 5/10s , but the soles are now shredded.
At least they’re getting paid.
Weird to see them come after Nike left
And B: TLD stuff never seems to fit me right! which is annoying as hell, being the epitome of a man that I am..*cough!

C'mon TLD, you guys can do much better then that!
So, a few years ago we decided it wasn't cool to pick on weirdos, yes? Basically, we got rid of bullies!
Now we have all these weirdos walking around like it's ok to be weird!!!
I say, bring the bullies back, to beat the "weird" out of the"weirdos"!!!
