CJ Carter, AKA "Diavolo" was a freeriding pioneer who built one of the world's first loop de loops back in 1904. Matt wants to channel his inner Diavolo and turn his biggest, most fantastical dream into a reality - to build the biggest loop de loop the world has seen and then, gasp, to ride it! To turn this vision into a reality, Matt needs your help. Invest in Matt's project and have your name, your brand, your logo stamped on a piece of history!

Raise the Loop

The Project
Matt Macduff is about to embark on his most ambitious project ever! Building the world's largest wooden loop de loop (40’ Tall) 12 meters and riding it on his bicycle. This is no easy task… So Matt and his crew, need your help and want you to be involved in the action, every step along the way.

Every piece of this massive structure is up for sale, that means when you support this world record attempt. You'll be able to leave as big or as small as your like, depending on the different creative option of your purchase.

Ultimately you will help create a giant performance art masterpiece for Matt to ride and the world to enjoy. A cycling monument to be remembered forever!

bigquotes13 days in, and I can't believe I'm under 20% away from reaching my goal and making this loop happen! I'm overwhelmed by the messages and support that I've received... I think it's awesome and I can't wait to write all your names and messages on this freestyle masterpiece! Last but not least, I want to say a big thank-you to all of my friends, family, and sponsors who are all helping me make this happen, it's going to be awesome! Matt MacDuff

bigquotesWe're super excited to be teaming up with Matt this year and, as with all of his projects, Raise the Loop looks set to be something truly special. We're sure people will feel the same as us and make sure the Kickstarter total is smashed and paves the way for THE riding project of 2016! John Firth at Oneal

bigquotesWe are really proud to support the extremely talented rider and our friend, Matt Macduff, in this game-changing project. Getting involved and making dreams a reality is what we believe in and that's exactly what Matt stands for. He became Montreal's Mud Rocker ambassador since day 1, not only through riding but by designing, building and mostly by being an awesome spokesperson! We can't wait to see him roll around the biggest loop of all time. Have fun Matt, you got it! Micah Desforges & Stephane Belanger - Mud Rocker event organizers

bigquotesEveryone here at Five Ten has been a fan of Matt Macduff for some time now. For years, we have seen what Matt is capable of doing on a bike but it was his part in BUILDER that really gave us a chance to see how creative Matt can be with his builds. When Matt came to us with this massive 40-foot Raise The Loop project we were beyond stoked to help Matt make his latest dream become reality. Breaking records and pushing the limits of what is possible is what Five Ten, Brand of the Brave is all about. Five Ten

Risks and Challenges
There are many risk's and many challenges in the world of actions sports but few are more experienced and qualified than Matt to handle them.

After the structure is complete a short video will be released, directed by Louis Lhomel, documenting Matt ridding the world record Loop and dedicating the stunt to all who helped him realize his dream… that's you!

bigquotesAfter the project, I'm hoping to use the Loop and the compound at the Trail Park to do some filming for an upcoming web project. With a super Loop as my squirrel catcher, you know it's going to be interesting. Matt MacDuff.

Raise the Loop
The old-timey, bad-ass inspiration behind it all.

Visit the Kickstarter Page to help Matt's vision become a reality.
Thank you for your time and support!

I can do the physics behind the loop and tell you how fast you need to go in order to make it
  • 47 2
 Very fast
  • 102 1
I already did the math. 88mph Same as the Delorean in back to the future. A flux capacitor in the back pocket is a big help too.

flag Joebohobo FL (Jan 24, 2016 at 1:32) (Below Threshold)
Confused as to how you're getting 88? I just worked it out and I'm getting minimum speed of 64mph needed (28.3 m/s)
  • 93 1
There is a very slim chance that it was a joke Joe Wink
  • 70 13
Ah. Just had a google of Back to the future, came out 12 years before I was born, hence my complete lack of knowledge about it haa Big Grin My bad guys
  • 16 6
pretty easy to calculate .. but we need to know the exact weight in kg of Matt and his bike
  • 43 3
You've never seen back to the future?!?!
Not even last year in October when it was the actual future date from the film?
You sir, need to give your head a wobble.
  • 27 0
RedBurn you don't need his weight since the mass cancels out of the equation
And @samfr1000, I shall give it a wobble soon Big Grin
  • 11 0
 Top lad. It's awesome.
  • 62 4
Everytime a kid doesn't get a "back to the future" reference a little piece of me dies inside.
  • 4 4
my mistake .. gonne write it down now
  • 6 6
 I find 15,47m/s =55,68kph
  • 15 1
@RedBurn, That speed wouldn't even get you to the top part of the loop and that's if you ignore friction as well, you're way out
  • 61 0
I'm feeling pretty good about 70km ish, I'll be sure to get a speed gun though cause there awesome!
  • 10 1
Good luck bro! Hope it works out Smile Was meant to edit my last comment as 55KM/h is the minimum speed needed so 70 should be plenty. Can't wait to see the video after Big Grin
  • 8 1
I got that he needs a start ramp just over 15 metres high and needs to hit 62km/hr AND I'm prepared to show my working. ????????

  • 1 0
What happens if you go too fast?
  • 5 0
@hollowing2000 probably grey out, worst case scenario black out. Not good
  • 26 8
call redbull...or DC...dont ask me for money for this.
  • 3 0
@hollowing2000 a G out at the top of the loop so hard he eats the bar and lady lucky takes over for the rest of the ride.
  • 9 0
 Thanks man!
  • 5 0
Woah! Good luck! 12m is chuffing massive. I think Redburn's 55km/h gets you to the top of the loop (by conservation of energy, and ignoring resistance of any kind - do it in a vacuum!) doing 0 km/h. I really hope Señor Macduff is going quicker than that at the top. Me reckon one needs to be doing 10.8 m/s, or 38km/h at the top of the loop just to stay on the loop. And that's with no force at the apex, so no steering. Hitting it at 70km/h gets you 11.9m/s at the top upside down ha ha by my crappy forgotten 18 year vintage A level physics. Stick a few pedals in while you're up there just to be sure!
  • 2 0
I didnt really see how to put the friction in the equation. There's certainly some kind of coefficient that must be used on my answer to take that friction .. what about k=1,5 .. sounds enough Big Grin
  • 2 0
62 km/h excluding rolling resistance is correct. No desire to go through the trouble of finding it with rolling resistance.
  • 3 1
I have a question for Matt.
Knowing the loop is taller, and has a larger diameter than a "conventional" loop, and won't be as compressive on the entry, and without taking into consideration the increased consequences for falling, do you think this will be easier than the small loop?
Totally serious question.
  • 2 0
@RedBurn If you draw out the forces in relation to centripetal force and tangential force to the loop, the frictional forces won't be considered in the centripetal portion of the equation, cause they travel in the tangential direction. Just normal force, gravity, and centripetal acceleration. So, no friction needed. I'd put my money on @mwart calcs.
  • 1 1
55 km/h, w/o friction and all, so I won't ride slower than 65. If you would like to build a ramp to run-in, it would be bout 20 meters high o.0
  • 1 0
At the top of the loop, centrifugal force (mass * speed² / radius) needs to counteract the weight (mass*gravity)
So the minimum speed at the top is sqrt(gravity*radius) = sqrt(9.81*6.1) = 7.73 m/s = 27.8 km/h = 17.3 mph

But not so easy to determine the speed at the base of the loop, cause of friction etc...
  • 1 1
There are no only forces to apply in calculations; energy is important too.
  • 2 1
But that depends on what method you use. Either conservation of energy or forces and acceleration. Can't mix the two as one is derived from the other.

  • 87 19
Sorry my projects come across to you like that...
  • 18 3
That was my first instinct but it is actually a smart way to ensure everyone gets what they want without fannying around. I actually like this direct approach and Matt certainly delivers.

By all means try and crowdfund your trip gingerninja if you think you are cool enough to get the backing of others Wink
  • 16 5
no disrespect dude, good on you if you can get it done like this. just i think its something the people who will be benefiting from it should be funding, sponsors and the like, they are the ones who will be getting loads of publicity WHEN you pull it off.

i am that cool beardless Wink just not as popular lol.
  • 15 1
@gingerninja - every donor gets sponsorship exposure, the more you give the bigger the exposure.

Matt isn't backed by the massive sponsors that throw money at their big teams (and even then budgets aren't what yo think they are), so good on him for not letting that stop him from pursuing these whacky ideas that entertain all of us.

Never hurts to ask, as long as you ask nicely Wink
  • 5 2
I thought about balking at the idea of a fundraiser for fun. But then I thought about what Matt did for the CF cause, and can't see any reason that he shouldn't receive support. There are a lot of guys making bank in the mtb world. Matt's not one of them. But he is super talented, and fun as fuck to watch. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if something bigger becomes of the big loop, and benefits someone in need all over again

No joke...Will not be donating to this lame "cause".
  • 17 13
Of all the causes, charities, foundations, etc., I am supposed to donate to someone trying to do a stunt? Seriously?
All of the PB kids living in their parents basement can neg. prop this, cause it's not cool. They can also PM me for a great investment opportunity I have in some S. Florida real estate.
  • 10 6
^ effing nerds. best of luck mr macduff!!
  • 6 9
reformedroadie, that is pathetic you just took to the pinkbike comments to stroke your f*cking ego over real estate. No commendable person of wealth should ever feel the need to reduce themselves to that level of blatant shit throwing.

You want the cliff notes? No one cares. You're on a f*cking mountain bike forum, you know, a sport where a lot of people tend to not give a shit about waving paystubs and portfolios around like a dumb child who got too much for Christmas. This ain't golf. Your assets mean nothing to any of us.
  • 7 3
@anchoricex - That was a joke. As in anyone foolish enough to donate hard earned money (or their parent's money) would be gullible enough to get suckered into a real estate/ponzi/pyramid scheme...you sir, are next level foolish. For you, I have some magic beans for sale.
  • 3 0
 ^ Reformed...good call homie.
When I first read it, I was like "So is this to raise awareness for a disease or poverty or at least something worthy?"
Alas no.
  • 20 5
Im baffeled by all the negativity. Anyone who has seen his videos and projects should realise that he would not ask for money if it wasnt needed for this project. If you dont want to contribute, that is absolutely fine but do not spread negative words on a guy like him. He is one of the few people keeping bike riding cool and progressiv.
  • 1 1
This. It's not like he lives super lavishly, just seeing him take in those two young shredders in previous videos to let them get some riding time in with him was outstanding. Decent guy, loves the sport clearly more then most people commenting.
  • 2 0
@Airik, @anchoricex...how much have you contributed?
  • 2 0
25€. but does that really matter ?
  • 2 0
No, kudos. I have a feeling most of the commenters on how rad it is, aren't backing up the sentiment with their money.

  • 5 0
Matt, I'm supporting this partially to see the loop but mostly to see more Review Bazookas.
  • 15 6
I don't even know you, Matt. But I get this is about more than just a selfish request for help. It's about doing something really big, that most ppl aren't qualified or ballsy enough to do or even support. But you have the qualifications and some history. Together, we have the funds. So you're reaching out to fans. It makes sense. To anyone comparing this to a completely selfish request that doesn't fulfill anyone's desires but your own...you're being short sighted. This is for the sport, too, as well as your entertainment. You haters could try to show some respect for people who dedicate their lives to a high risk sport with relatively low financial reward, and still want to push the limits.
  • 6 0
So did anybody else notice that after the loop in the oldschool postcard picture, the guy was jumping into a whale tail like structure with a step down at the end?
  • 4 0
I guess 1904 was an important year for American Freeriders; like maybe the year it arrived from Italy. Some circus dudes did an Upside down open loop jump.
Found some stuff on another MTB site Search "World Record 1904 Upside Down Loop Jump"
Would have been cooler if flaming loops were involved; but without helmets and body armor, foam pits these were some badass french dudes.
Wonder where their bikes are?

  • 6 3
Matt, youre sick. You're inspiring waay more people than you realize. Its just the negative Nancy's that speak up, and they just want to have their time on a blog. There are hundreds of believers that will never speak up, for every one troll. Theyre grumpy they don't help themselves achieve personal goals. Don't listen to the self entitled, who complain but have never tried their own crowd funding. You're making it happen, and its going to be radical. Props.

He's going to have to go so fast that he's gonna get splatted into the upward face like a carton of custard.
  • 18 16
It's hard to believe a "pro" rider takes this route to build this stunt. Seeking money from the public to build something solely for this person's gratification and increased exposure as a "professional" isn't my idea of money well spent. I can think of a lot more deserving charities.
  • 13 5
Nobody is forcing you to give him money.

To me it is funny in a sad kinda' way. All the kids bitching, moaning, and voicing their disapproval for your project. It's almost as if they think other people know they are alive, let alone care what some kid thinks, about what they spend their own money on. Almost endearing, how these children think they are real people, with something meaningful or insightful to contribute. You are real people Matt. Thanks for being awesome. Hope you have a blast out there.

You don't have to donate anything! By all means get behind stuff you like the look of though and fair play to Matt for finding an alternative route to getting stuff done and providing the rest of us with great, free content
  • 17 18
So you want me to give money to watch you do a loop that no one else gets to ride to prove what we already know, that bikes rule..... Cmon man. This is just a stunt, nothing more, a pointless stunt, makes me think of hot rod, but even that was about a bigger cause. Also, as a pro rider you cant drum up $8k.....yeesh, like your bro act, this stunt is tired and played out. Time to grow up, maybe spend the money on helping someone.
  • 12 4
And you've previously produced and released a feature length film to raise funds for which charity? 'Cause I know someone recently did something similar for CF... just can't remember who that was right now....
