Did Tom van Steenbergen stomp the biggest front flip in mountain bike history? Watch the video from Tom’s Sony Action Cam, shot during production of Teton Gravity Research & Anthill Films' new movie, UNREAL.
That was a #stoked moment. Sums up mountain biking pretty well. Does not matter how big the feature is, we all get that feeling. Front flip was insane too.
@Brynwinter: you can't compare them, they are both totally different riders. Danny does frontflips where Tom probably can't, but also the other way round.
Can't compare a frontflip off a ledge to a front flip over a huge double. In my opinion both are equally sick.
(Yes I know Tom also rides skateparks and a little street, but his riding style and where he fulls his front flips is still totally different than the trials style Danny does. No sence in comparing oranges and apples.)
cheat codes: left steer twice, then tap your right brake x3 then rear brake x1, shift your rear to second lowest cog, pull your front wheel up. You just activated to full pro trick control assist.
Yeah it had to be slowed down a little bit it. Just the transition to landing, you don't go that slow to land then have the video speed up all of sudden lol. Granted the jump was huge so can't just go too fast/over rotate, but still, looks slowed down undoubtedly. Footage is smooth as always though with Sony's image stabilizer.
there wasnt any slow-mo at all the hang time for that beast is just ridiculously long... his head being tucked into his bike just made it seem like it was slowed down
I didn't see it speed up, pretty sure it's not slowmo. When you're upside down staring at nothing but clouds, of course it's going to appear slower! There's no immediate objects around to display any sort of movement
look I've never done a frontflip, but you can tell that the footage speeds up a second after he lands...its not him going faster, the footage speeds up. right at 32 seconds.
Thought i made another reply, but guess it never went through lol. Obviously this whole slow-mo thing isn't a big deal and no one is doubting he nailed the jump. Hopefully can see a different angle soon enough, as any POV camera's depth of field cannot do the actual jump distance any sort of close justice.
Anyways, not a big deal, but just to make clear that some sections were gradually slowed down and then sped up again, the biggest proof that the footage was slowed momentarily is at landing area. Starting @ 0:28 can see Tom landing, but at a decent downward landing slope. Plus, He had to carry tons of speed even before. To have anyone land any kind of flip with that little of speed at landing doesn't make sense. Not like the landing was a big step-up or such. Then biggest part @ 0:31~ you can see Tom is at a relatively flatter part of the slope, but even before he hits that tiny downward slope again it speeds up to normal a good 1-2 seconds before. Pretty easy to catch, just watch it a few times and anyone can see the transition/speed-up.
What bothers me is how all the bike movies coming out don't have many surprises left. All the bangers and most of the shoots have so much footage leaked in mini edits and sneak previews that it sullys the final movie. I liked the older movies cause you had very little idea what crazy stuff you were about to see.
Impressive move all the same.
I'd agree with this. I remember when I used to buy the disorder movies just to see what the final segment was going to be, and see who was pulling what ie: Paul Bass throwing down a 720, or Andreu's double backflip.
So true. Was pumped to see rad company but was so disappointed. Great ridding, great film but had seen it all in LBB.
You want a surprise of anything anymore don't get in the internet.
But they have to do it to get international coverage and potentially greater sales.
Thats bullshit! I've done many quadrouple frontflips with multiple trick variations in them on bike mayhem and i dont get any kind of recognition? Stoked for him, but what about me?
Leaking the probable movie ending banger of a video which will come out in a year is a terrible idea.
However every video I watch is so overhyped that when I do finally purchase it, sit down and watch it I am horribly underwhelmed and dissapointed anyway, so maybe leaking footage in this way is a good idea.
Pretty sure that's in dubois, wyoming. I rode with Tom and Cam McCaul a few weeks ago in my hometown an hour from there-awesome guys, I love that in our sport, the pros are the nicest dudes you'll meet. Not to mention their insane trick bags...
o my gaddddddddd, he was a floatin an flyin upside down geez!!!! Too sick. Wait , isn't zink suppose to do a front flip at mammoth????????? Guiness world record?
A static shot of an empty jump and a helmet cam shot of .............................. Ill take your word for it that he did a big front flip but the vid is a big let down.
Front flip was insane too.

I know it's bmx, but didn't Napolitano double front flip the mega ramp back in 2009? Might be bigger.
